Yesterday morning, my wife Marple found a female adult of rose-borer in our garden. The culprit perched on a leaf of Rosa 'Iceberg' at the rose arbour. She caught it alive in a flash. This is the first time we look at a real one. A saw-like ovipositor, by which it cuts rose stems, can be seen on the enlarged picture. Oh, it's awful!

ReplyDeleteWe have something similar in the UK - the rose sawfly - which also cuts into the stem of the rose to lay eggs and then the stem swells and distorts as the insect grows. I do remove and destroy any I find! They have a bright yellow/orange body so can be spotted quite easily.
