honey suckle



At the entrance to our garden, Saxifraga stolonifera is now in bloom.  Flowers have distinctive pointed petals and bright yellow ovary.  It looks like heuchera, because they belong to the same family Saxifragaceae.

Its Japanese name is Yuki-no-shita which means 'under the snow'.  Its leaves are edible, usually cooked in tempura.

(庭の入口にユキノシタが今咲いています。特徴的なとがった花びらと明るい黄色の子房をもっています。ヒューケラに似ていますが、両者は同じユキノシタ科に属します。 日本名は雪ノ下。その葉は食用となり、天ぷらにして食べたりします。)
