BUMBLEBEES IN HERB BEDS (ハーブ畑のハナバチたち)

In the terraced herb beds, three kinds of sage bear flowers;
Salvia guaranitica (Anise-scented sage),
Salvia leucantha (Mexican Bush Sage) and
Salvia microphylla (baby sage)

We trimmed salvia guaranitica two times
and now it bears the third flush of flowers now.
Salvia leucantha started to flower at the beginning of September,
and Salvia microphylla has been flowering since early summer.

サルビア・ガラニチカ
アメジストセージ、そして
チェリーセージ

サルビア・ガラニチカは2回切り戻して、
今は今年3回目の開花です.
アメジストセージは9月初めから咲き始めました.
そしてチェリーセージは初夏からずっと咲き続けています.

Yesterday morning, I watched BBC world news on NHK satellite channel. 

I was interested in 'Alarm over decline in flying insects'. 

 昨日の朝、NHK衛星放送でBBCのニュースをみましたが、

飛ぶ昆虫の減少への警告というニュースに興味を持ちました

'It's known as the windscreen phenomenon. When you stop your car after a drive, there seem to be far fewer squashed insects than there used to be.

Scientists have long suspected that insects are in dramatic decline, but new evidence confirms this.

Research at more than 60 protected areas in Germany suggests flying insects have declined by more than 75% over almost 30 years.

The loss of insects has far-reaching consequences for entire ecosystems.

Insects provide a food source for many birds, amphibians, bats and reptiles, while plants rely on insects for pollination.

「フロントガラス現象として知られています. ドライブのあとにフロントガラスにぶつかってつぶれている昆虫が昔より減っているのです.

科学者たちは劇的に昆虫が減少していると長く疑ってきましたが

これを裏付ける新しい証拠がでてきました.

ドイツでの60箇所以上の場所での研究で、

過去30年ほどで75％以上減少しているというのです.

It seems a quite serious problem. 

Many bumblebees are flying around in our garden

to suck nectar. 

We owe pollination of blueberry totally to them, 

and we are relieved when we find them flying around blueberry flowers in spring. 

これはとても深刻な問題に思えます.
たくさんのハナバチが私たちの庭で蜜を吸うために飛び回っています.
ブルーベリーの受粉は完全に彼らに頼っています.
春、ブルーベリーの花を飛び回っているのを見つけるとホッとします.
