PLANTS WITH BRIGHT FOLIAGE COLOURS (鮮やかな葉色の植物たち)
There are some beautiful plants with bright foliage in the garden at the moment.
The first is the Japanese jasmine, which is a vine. The leaves on the newly growing branches are a beautiful pink. From a distance it looks like a flower has bloomed. The vine is spreading in a raised bed for peonies, and next to it, on top of a summer-pruned boxwood, it looks as if the boxwood is in flower.
The other is Coleus. It is a cold-sensitive annual. It is a typical summer garden plant with its bright red and yellow leaves. It actually flowers, but the small blue flowers are less conspicuous because of the prominent foliage colour. It is winterised by taking cuttings in autumn.
今、庭では鮮やかな葉が美しい植物が見頃です。
最初はハツユキカズラで、つる性の植物です. 新しく伸びた枝の葉が美しいピンク色をしています. 遠くから見ると、まるで花が咲いたようです. ピオニー用のレイズドベッドで広がっていて、その横にある夏に剪定したマメツゲの上にも、ツルが伸びてあたかもマメツゲに花が咲いているように見えます.
もう一つはコリウスです. 寒さに弱い一年草です. その葉が鮮やかな赤や黄色など夏の庭の代表的な植物です. 実は花が咲くのですが、青くて小さい花なので目立つ葉色のためにあまり目立ちません. 秋に挿し穂にして冬越しをしています.

RAIN LILY: THE MESSENGER OF AUTUMN (秋の使者 タマスダレ)
The rain lily, the flower that heralds the arrival of autumn, have started to bloom in our garden. Last weekend we had the first autumn air, with cool mornings and evenings and brisk heat during the day.
The rain lily is bulbous plant, and planted in pots, usually placed behind the fence, but at this time of year it takes centre stage in front of the fence. I put it next to the cuphea, which has been flowering since the summer.
The flowers open in the morning sun and close in the evening. The opening of the flowers is shown in the video below.
私たちの庭に秋の訪れを知らせる花、タマスダレが咲きだしました. 先週末は初めて秋の空気が流れ込み、朝晩涼しく、日中も爽やかな暑さでした.
タマスダレは球根植物で鉢植えにしていて、いつもはフェンスの裏側に置いていますが、この時期はフェンスの前で主役になります. 夏から咲いてきたクフェアの隣に置きました.
朝日をあびると花は開き、夕方には閉じます. 花が開く様子は動画でちょっと紹介しています.

THE POTAGER AT THE END OF SUMMER (夏の終わりのポタジェ)
The summer cypress (Kochia scoparia) I bought from a seedling and planted two months ago has grown a lot, has lots of very small flowers and its branches are turning a little red.
The sunflower 'Sunbelievable', which bloomed all summer, is still flowering in abundance. It will continue to flower until late autumn.
The boxwood, which has been pruned back hard, is producing a few new leaves. The pentagonal frame I made ten years ago is looking a bit broken and will probably be used for the last time this year. We are gradually making the change to sustainable gardening for us.
2か月前に苗を買って植えたコキアがだいぶん大きくなって、ごく小さな花をたくさんつけ、少し枝が赤く色づいてきています.
夏中咲き続けたヒマワリのサンビリーバブルはまだたくさん花をつけています. 晩秋まで咲き続けます.
強剪定したセイヨウツゲは少し新しい葉がでてきています. 10年前に作った五角形のフレームはだいぶん壊れてきていて、今年が最後になりそうです. 私たちにとって持続可能なガーデニングへの変更も少しずつ進めていきます.

BLUEBELL GARDEN AT THE END OF SUMMER (夏の終わりのブルーベルの庭)
It is now late September and the heat is less intense, but it is still summer heat. In the bluebell garden, the bluebells are dormant as bulbs under the soil, but around them are the Lycoris and Liriope muscari flowers.
The Lycoris here is a pale cream-coloured variety, which blooms just around the autumnal equinox.
The Liriope muscari also blooms around the same time, providing a beautiful contrast in colour. There is also a variegated variety.
九月も後半になってひどい暑さはなくなってきましたが、まだ夏の暑さが続いています. ブルーベルの庭では、ブルーベルは土の下で球根として休眠していますが、その周りに彼岸花（リコリス）やヤブランの花が咲いています.
ここのリコリスは淡いクリーム色の品種で、ちょうど秋分の頃に咲きます.
ヤブランも同じころに咲いて、色の対比がきれいです. 斑入りの品種もあります.

APPLES ARE RIPENING (りんごが熟してきました)
The apples in the espalier and arch of the potager are ripening and starting to drop a little.
The ripe apples have been picked.
They were very dirty, but a good sponge wash cleaned them up.
The apples were small but tasted delicious.
We can enjoy them little by little.
ポタジェのエスパリエとアーチのりんごが熟してきて、少しずつ落ちだしました.
熟したりんごを収穫しました.
随分汚れていますが、スポンジでしっかり洗うときれいになりました.
小さいけど、美味しいりんごの味でした.
少しずつ楽しめそうです.

PRETTY FLOWERS BLOOMING WITH A HINT OF AUTUMN (秋の気配を感じて咲く可憐な花)
Barnardia japonica bears pretty pink florets in late summer.
This is a bulbous plant and is native to East Asia.
Pink flower spikes consist of many florets.
I bring the pots to the centre of the garden in early September to enjoy this pretty flowers.
ツルボは晩夏に可愛いピンクの小花をつけます.
球根性の植物で、東アジアの原産です.
花穂にはたくさんの小花がついています.
九月の初めには鉢を庭の中央にもってきてこの可愛らしい花を楽しみます.
