POTAGER THIS MORNING (今朝のポタジェ)

In the kitchen garden,
courgette and cucumber grow their large leaves and bear fruits.
Large yellow flowers of courgette are so beautiful.
Dahlia in front of the shed is in bloom.

My wife found a pair of  Anoplophora malasiaca on a standard rose
and I caught them.
This is the most dreadful pest of roses as I wrote in a post two years ago.
We always go round the garden to find pests carefully on roses.

PRUNING & TRAINING OF BRICK WALL ROSES

I pruned and trained the climbing roses on the brick wall yesterday.

I found a larva of Anoplophora malasiaca ( 'Teppo-Mushi' in Japanese)
in the branch of Rosa 'Gertrude Jekyll'.
This pest may let a whole rose plant wither.
Last May, Rosa 'Crown Princess Margareta' on the brick wall died as a whole.
Fortunately, it withered only one of four branches this time.

The number of branches of Rosa 'Constant Spry' (on the left ) is more than six,
however, that of Rosa 'Gertrude Jekyll' (on the right) is only three.

I planted new young plant in the plot
where Rosa 'Crown Princess Margareta' had grown and died last year.

I really recognized the awfulness of Anoplophora malasiaca once again.

THIS WEEKEND (この週末)

This weekend we had no rain.  It was mostly cloudy with some sunshine, and it was very humid.
We were busy at gardening.

I made an observation platform (a bench and a handrail) at the top of a new garden.

Rosa 'Crown Princess Margareta' at the brick wall had been dead last month.  I dug it up and examined its reason.  Eventually I had found a larva of Anoplophora malasiaca ( 'Teppo-Mushi' in Japanese).  That is the most dreadful pest of roses in Japan.

Our friend in my town had given us herbaceous cuttings of four kinds of hydrangea, and we planted them in small pots today.  The picture below shows flowers and cuttings.

Hydrangea flowers were arranged with Rosa 'Angela'.  Vivid pink colour of the flowers brightens the atmosphere.

MARPLE ARRESTED THE CULPRIT

Yesterday morning, my wife Marple found a female adult of rose-borer in our garden.  The culprit perched on a leaf of Rosa 'Iceberg' at the rose arbour.  She caught it alive in a flash.  This is the first time we look at a real one.   A saw-like ovipositor, by which it cuts rose stems, can be seen on the enlarged picture.  Oh, it's awful!

ROSES' ARCHENEMY APPEARED (バラの大敵現る)

Roses' powerful enemy has appeared last week, and its attack is continuing now.

This is the first sign of being attacked which I found in Rosa 'Mary Rose' last Saturday.  A new shoot suddenly wilts while others are vigorous.

Peeling skin of its stem revealed that the enemy incised the stem in the shape of flying seagull.  The skin looks normal and I didn't know that it is a deed of an insect when I saw it for the first time.  I examined about it and it became clear that the pest is a rose-borer Neosyrista similis.

Once I saw through a stem using a pocket torch and a magnifying glass, I found something oval just close to the seagull-shaped incision.  Using a sewing needle, I found a very small oval egg.

This is a wilted shoot of Japanese wild rose 'Rosa multiflora' found last Saturday in our garden.  Its leaves is becoming dry, therefore, it seems that several days have passed since the attack of the enemy.  I cut the stem and found a small caterpillar.

There are many Q and A on internet about rose borers, however, I couldn't find scientific information about it.  But I found the scientific paper written by a Chinese student of Kyushu University.  It was reported in 1936, in Japanese with an English abstract.  The paper includes meticulous observations about rose borers and is very useful for gardeners growing roses.  Photos below are front page and English abstract of the paper.  You can read the full text here.

TRAPS FOR SUMMER VEG

Some mini tomatoes and cucumbers are ripening in the kitchen garden, despite the relative lack of sunshine during this summer.

Mini fruit tomato 'Aiko'
Mini fruit tomato 'Yellow Aiko'

We are using traps for these vegetables instead of insecticides.
The first trap is a sticky trap.  Because yellow color attracts many kinds of insects, the trap is full of insects stuck on it in a few days.

A yellow sticky trap over cucumbers
The second trap is a yellow bucket filled with water and a little of oil and vinegar.  Yellow color and vinegar smell of the bucket attracts insects and they drown in the water with surface oil.  The nursery in our town recommends and sells this yellow bucket.

The last one is a measure coping with crows.  A simple inflatable crow is hung, and crows fear it (they think it a dead crow), and keep away from it.  It's workink, I think.

A PEST OF ROSES

Anoplophora malasiaca is the most dreadful pest of roses in Japan.  Most of gardeners have a experience of its damage to large rose stems.
A larva of it is called 'Teppo-Mushi' in Japan, which means 'rifle worm' in Japanese.  Eggs of Anoplophora malasiaca are laid into stems of various trees including roses.  A larva eats pith of stem and make a tunnel within it, just like the way stem borers do.  It looks like a bullet in a barrel of a rifle.

They come to gardens in June and July to lay eggs.  They usually fly to the top of roses with a height of more than 1.7 meter, and move down to a large part of branch or stem, most often to the point several inches from the ground.

Roses, especially climbing ones, often wither due to this pest.  We had lost a Rosa 'Pierre de Ronsard' several years ago.  Fortunately  Rosa 'Paul's Himalayan Musk' and Rosa 'François Juranville' had withstood attacks to their large branches.

Yesterday my wife found and caught it (below).
Anoplophora malasiac

---------------------------------

Four pictures below are situations of damage and precautionary measures in our garden.

Fine wood particles are attached on the surface of a rose stem.  This is a sign of a larva of Anoplophora malasiac. (Rosa 'Summer Snow, September 2012)

After removing the wood particles, holes of the back side of stems were found using a mirror.  By using a wire, larvae had been squashed.  (Rosa 'François Juranville', July 2012)

In order to prevent the damage, we used a fine net.  (Rosa 'Paul's Himalayan Musk')

Another method is to coat the surface of large stems with special emulsion of resin.  (Rosa 'Summer Snow', April 2013)

Every two weeks from spring to autumn, we must check the signs of Anoplophora malasiaca about all of the roses in our garden.  (But we often forget it!)
