BAKING SWEET POTATOES IN THE GARDEN（庭で焼き芋）
The colder it gets, the more I want to eat a baked sweet potato. These days we often bake sweet potatoes on the grill of our built-in gas stove in the kitchen, but there's nothing quite like grilling over an open fire.
寒くなると焼き芋が食べたくなります。最近は台所のコンロのグリルで焼くことも多いですが、はやり焚火で焼くのは格別です。とても寒くなってきたので、ポタジェのバーベキューコンロで乾かしていた庭の剪定枝を燃やしてサツマイモを焼きました。
Wrap them in wet kitchen paper and then in aluminium foil and place them under the fire. In about an hour they will be soft and ready to eat.
濡らしたキッチンペーパーで包んだ上からさらにアルミホイルで包んで、焚火の下に置きます。およそ1時間ほどで軟らかくなって、食べごろです。
As the cold rain started to fall, we took refuge in the garden room and enjoyed them.
冷たい雨が降り出したので、ガーデンルームに避難しておいしく食べました。

ROSA 'DAINTY BESS' (バラ、デンティーベス)
The rose ’Dainty Bess' is gradually blooming in the border flower beds of the potager, where the cold wind is blowing. Because of the cooler temperatures, flowering is proceeding slowly.
I found and photographed a flower that had just started to open, and the next day it had opened a little further. It is only in the cold season that the flowers last longer.
冷たい風が吹き抜けるポタジェのボーダー花壇で、バラのデンティベスが少しずつ咲いています。気温が下がったため、開花はゆっくり進みます。
開き始めた花を見つけて撮影し、次の日はほんの少しさらに開いていました。花が長く持つのは寒い季節ならではです。

WINTER IS FINALLY HERE (ついに冬が来た)
The weather had been warm until last week, but this week, after the rain on Monday, a cold air mass came down from the north and it suddenly became as cold as winter.
Even during the daytime, the temperature was only just over 10 degrees Celsius, and with no sunshine and strong wind, it felt really cold.
Our town, located on the northern coast of Kyushu Island, has a lot of cloudy weather in winter, which is a little depressing.
A couple who lives nearby goes to the Kanto region (near Tokyo) only during the winter. I would like to do so if I could. I wish I could do that, but I can't, because I have many gardening jobs in winter.
先週まで暖かい日が続いていましたが、今週になって月曜日の雨を境に寒気団が北から降りてきて、一気に冬のような寒さになりました。
日中も気温は10℃あまりしかなく、日差しがなく風が強いと本当に寒く感じます。
九州の北岸にある私たちの町は冬は曇りがちの天気が多くて少し憂鬱です。
近くに住むご夫婦は冬の間だけ関東地方に行かれます。できるならそうしたいところです。でも冬には冬の大事な庭仕事もあるので、そういうわけにも行きません。
There is a utility pole that I can see from my window where birds often perch.
Large birds such as Tonbi (black kite) often come to this pole, but crows also often perch there. Crows also often perch on the TV antenna of our neighbor's house.

窓から見えるところに鳥たちがよくとまっている電柱があります。大型の鳥であるトビがよくこの電柱に来ますが、カラスもよくとまります。カラスはお隣の家のテレビアンテナにもよくとまっています。そしてトビとカラスは敵対していて、トビがカラスを追い払ったり、逆にカラスが何羽も一緒にトビを襲ったりします。のんびり暮らしているように見えても、彼らも大変です。
From the window of my house, I can see the garden transitioning from autumn to winter: changing colours of cherry, maple and wisteria leaves, and dogwood whose stems turn bright red in winter.
家の窓からは秋から冬へ移ろう庭の景色がみられます。桜やカエデ、フジの紅葉、そして冬に茎が鮮やかな赤色になるサンゴミズキなどです。
In cold weather, the garden room becomes a comfortable shelter.

OUR GARDENS IN NOVEMBER (11月の我が家の庭)
It's late autumn and some of the deciduous trees in the garden are losing their leaves or changing colour, and the flowers and plants are dwindling. Despite this, some roses are still in flower.
晩秋となり、庭では一部の落葉樹が葉を落とし、あるいは紅葉し、草花も減ってきています. そんな中でも、いくつかのバラはまだ花を咲かせています.
In the main garden, the lemons and oranges are beginning to change colour. The tender flowers such as coleus are almost finished. The Lantana montevidensis will continue to produce purple flowers for some time to come. Chaste tree is still blooming, which mainly flowers in summer, but they will soon be pruned and will go dormant for the winter.
メインガーデンでは、レモンやオレンジが色づき始めました. 寒さに弱いコリウスなどの草花はもうすぐ終わりです. コバノランタナはこれからしばらく紫の花を咲かせ続けます. 夏の花のセイヨウニンジンボクがまだ最後の花を咲かせていますが、まもなく剪定の時期で、冬は休眠します.

In the potager the glory bush is in full bloom. Leaves of potato are getting bigger, but if the weather gets colder soon the potatoes may not get any bigger. The leaves of the asparagus are changing colour a little. The standard rose 'Mary Rose' bears the last flowers this season. A seedling of Echium vulgare is growing at the base of the rose.
ポタジェではノボタンが満開です. ジャガイモも大きくなってきましたが、早く寒くなってしまえばイモは大きくならないかもしれません. アスパラガスの葉は少し色づいてきています. スタンダードのバラのメアリーローズが最後の花をつけています. その株元にはエキウムブルガレの実生苗が育ってきています.

In the bluebell garden, the cherry trees are turning red and beginning to fall. There is nothing growing, where the bluebells bloom in spring, at the moment. The flowers of toad lily is still in bloom. We have harvested 'Karin' quince fruits to make a honey-soaked drink, which is good for throat.
ブルーベルの庭では桜の木が紅葉して散り始めています. ブルーベルの咲く場所には今は何も育っていません. ホトトギスの花がまだ咲き続けています. 喉の薬として使われる蜂蜜漬けを作るために、カリンの実を収穫しました.

ROSA ANGELA IN NOVEMBER (十一月のアンジェラ)
The rose 'Angela' is blooming on the iron arch. It is blooming well in spite of damages by disease or insects. There are fewer flowers than in May, but the bright pink petals are very beautiful.
In the morning, when the sun begins to shine in the garden, the beauty is exceptional.
アーチの上でバラのアンジェラが咲いています. 病気や害虫の食害にも負けずに咲いています. 五月に比べると花数は少ないですが、鮮やかなピンクの花びらがとても綺麗です.
朝、庭に日が射し始める時刻、美しさも格別です.
