FLOWERS NOW IN BLOOM IN THE POTAGER

The potager looks a bit bare in the height of summer with so few flowers, but this year I’m growing echinacea and rudbeckia in the spot where I had a standard rose until last year. It’s their first year, so they haven’t grown very tall yet, but they’re starting to produce beautiful flowers.

Echinacea purpurea has pink flowers, whilst Rudbeckia goldstrum has deep yellow ones; both are absolutely lovely. I hope they’ll grow strong and produce plenty of blooms.

Apart from these, marigolds are in bloom, and amongst the vegetables, the cherry tomatoes are flowering too.

The small yellow flowers of the miniature watermelons also bloom from time to time, and we’re enjoying the fruit as they grow larger.

SIDE YARD GARDEN IN THE RAIN

We’ve entered the height of the rainy season, and heavy rain is falling from time to time. In the side yard garden, the roses have finished flowering and are now putting out new shoots. New buds are also appearing on the jasmine beyond the small fountain. The ground cherry is bearing plenty of fruit again this year, gradually turning from green to brown as they ripen. When they’re ripe enough to fall off, the yellow fruits—about the size of cherry tomatoes inside their husks—have a sweet-and-sour, tropical flavour and are absolutely delicious. It looks as though we’ll be able to eat them soon. The echinacea in the narrow border along the retaining wall has produced more flowers and is looking magnificent. Higher up, the rose of Sharon has begun to bloom with white flowers. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we won’t suffer any damage from torrential rain.

ECHIASEA IN THE SIDE YARD GARDEN

The roses in the side yard garden have finished flowering, and now the echinacea in the small border bed is beginning to bloom. It is Echinacea purpurea, with its beautiful pink petals. I expect that white Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) will soon start to bloom in the summer garden, and the echinacea will continue to produce lovely flowers.

FAREWELL TO THE STANDARD ROSE(スタンダードのバラとさよなら)

The standard rose (Mary Rose) in the potager garden was planted when the garden was first laid out over ten years ago. Each May, it produced beautiful pink flowers and became something of a symbolic tree for the potager.

Around last year, the tree began to show signs of declining vigour. Sawdust emerged from the rootstock, suggesting longhorn beetle larvae had entered the trunk and were feeding on it.

It did flower again this May, but from around summer, some branches began to die back. By autumn, most of the branches had died.

Consequently, I decided to remove this rose. Digging into the soil revealed a dozen of Japanese beetle larvae, and the rose's roots had been almost entirely consumed by the larvae. These larvae were the culprits.

For now, I've decided to plant some flower seedlings. These are a large Echinacea grown from seed in the side yard garden and a small Rudbeckia seedling I recently purchased. I shall take my time considering whether to plant another standard rose.

MID-SUMMER HAS COME AT LAST WITH BLUE SKY

Japanese Met Office declared
that the rainy season was over in the northern Kyusyu area today.
The sky has changed from dark gray to beautiful blue.
There will be sunny days for at least a week ahead.
Some plants were so surprised at strong heat of the sun that they wilted in the afternoon.
