PRUNING THE BOXWOOD IN THE POTAGER (ポタジェの西洋ツゲの剪定)

 

The potager garden is situated on an isosceles triangular plot, with a shed positioned in the far corner. The long side to the left has been laid out as a border bed, whilst the rest of the plot is enclosed by a boxwood hedge. Furthermore, a trapezoidal enclosure of boxwood has been created within the garden, containing seven raised beds (one triangular, one square and four pentagonal).

ポタジェガーデンは二等辺三角形の土地にあり、奥の角にはシェッドを配置しています。その左の長辺部はボーダー花壇とし、そのほかの部分は西洋ツゲの垣根で囲っています。さらに、庭の中では台形の形で西洋ツゲの囲いをつくり、その中に7つのレイズドベッド（三角形１つ、四角形1つ、五角形４つ）を配置しています。

The boxwood is evergreen and does not grow new shoots during the winter. It does not shed its leaves even in spring, but instead produces new shoots from the tips of its branches. These new shoots are a bright green and look very pretty. However, if left unchecked, they will grow too large, so pruning is necessary. As the new shoots had become quite dense by April, I carried out the first pruning of the year. 

西洋ツゲは常緑で、冬の間は枝を伸ばしません。春になっても落葉することはなく、枝の先端から新芽を伸ばします。新芽は明るいグリーンで、とても綺麗です。しかし、そのままにしておくと大きくなりすぎてしまうので、剪定が必要です。4月になって新芽がたくさん茂って来たので今年最初の剪定を行いました。

I pruned the trapezoidal hedge inside the garden on my own using hedge shears. Whilst this method has the advantage of being quick and producing a straight cut, the leaves and thin twigs that have been cut in half by the shears are quite noticeable on the surface, and when you look closely, it looks a rather pitiful sight.

庭の内部の台形の垣根は刈り込みばさみを使ってひとりで剪定しました。この方法は作業が素早くまっすぐに切れる利点があるのですが、表面に鋏で半分に切られた葉や細い枝などが目立って近寄って見るととても痛々しい感じがします。

I pruned the hedge around the perimeter using secateurs. As it was time-consuming, my wife helped me and we did it together. Using the secateurs, we pruned the new shoots that had grown this spring, one by one. You can usually tell the new shoots apart by the colour of their leaves. Last year’s leaves are dark green, whilst the new shoots are a lighter green. Furthermore, as new shoots often grow from two side shoots, we made sure to cut them just below the base (please see the video for details). 

外周の垣根は剪定ばさみを使う方法て剪定しました。時間がかかるので家内に手伝ってもらって二人で剪定しました。剪定ばさみをつかって枝この春に伸びた新芽をを一本ずつ剪定します。新芽は主に葉の色で見分けます。去年の葉は濃い緑色で、新芽は明るい緑色です。そして、新芽は多くの場合二つの脇芽から伸びていることが多く、その基部のすぐ下で切るようにします（詳しくは動画をご覧ください）。

The length of the side facing the road is about 10 metres, it took the two of us half a day to complete the pruning. It took a fair bit of time and effort, but the result looks very natural and beautiful, and I’m delighted with it.

道路に面した一辺の長さは約10メートルあり、剪定に二人で半日かかりました。手間と時間はかかりましたが、見た目はとても自然で美しく、満足しています。

TRIMMING BOXWOOD HEDGES (セイヨウツゲの生垣の剪定)

 

The new shoots on the boxwood hedge in the potager garden had grown excessively, so I pruned them. The outer perimeter had been finished in early August, but this time it was the turn of the pentagonal hedge within the garden. 

ポタジェガーデンの生垣のセイヨウツゲの新芽が伸びすぎてきたので、剪定をしました。外周は8月前半に終わっていましたが、今回は庭の中にある五角形の生垣の剪定です。

It was extremely hot, so I used a parasol to avoid the strong midday sun. 

とても暑くて日中は強い日差しを避けるためにパラソルを使いました。

The previous pruning had been in early May, so I cut back the new growth that had appeared since then. Using large pruning shears to cut everything at once risks scorching the leaves in the intense sunlight, so this time I used regular pruning secateurs and cut each shoot individually. It's more labour-intensive, but it minimises damage to the foliage. 

前回の剪定は５月の初めでしたが、そのあと伸びた新芽を切りました。大きな剪定ばさみで一気に切ってしまうと、強い日差しで葉が焼けてしまうので、今回は普通の剪定ばさみを使って、一本ずつ切りました。手間はかかりますが、葉の痛みは最小限に抑えることができます。

While pruning, I discovered and removed numerous hidden pests (larvae of Cydalima perspectalis, or the box tree moth). 

剪定をすると、その下に潜んでいる害虫（ツゲノメイガの幼虫）をたくさん見つけて、駆除しました。

I worked hard even during the hottest part of the day and completed the task over two days.

暑い日中も頑張って作業を行い、２日間で作業を終えました。

THE POTAGER GARDEN, THE HEAT WAVE CONTINUES (猛暑の続くポタジェガーデン)

 

The rainy season ended in late June and it has been hot ever since. It has rained twice, but the garden is dry. In the potager garden, the plants are still doing their best. The sunflowers love the hot summer and are a variety called Sanfinity, which has many small flowers that bloom continuously. The flax has finished flowering and is bearing seeds. The green soybean seedlings are getting much bigger. Two varieties of perilla are planted, one green and one red. Asparagus still shoots out from time to time. The dwarf tomato, Mamma Mia, is finished and I pulled the plant out after picking the red berries.

六月下旬に梅雨が明けて、それからずっと暑い日が続いています。雨は二度ほど降りましたが、庭は乾いています。ポタジェガーデンではそれでも植物たちが頑張っています。ヒマワリは暑い夏が好きな花で、小さな花がたくさん咲き続けるサンフィニティーという品種です。亜麻は花が終わって実をつけています。枝豆の苗がだいぶん大きくなってきました。シソは緑と赤の2種類を植えています。アスパラガスは今も時々シュートを出してきます。矮性トマトのマンマミーアはもう終わりで、赤くなった実を採ってから株を引き抜きました。

PRETTY STRAWBERRY SAXIFRAGE FLOWRES (可憐なユキノシタの花)

 

The Strawberry saxifrage (Saxifraga stolonifera) is now in bloom just in front of the gate at the bottom of the garden (in the colours of the Ukrainian flag). They are pretty white flowers, and there seem to be lots of little fairies flying around.

庭の下のゲート（ウクライナ国旗のカラー）から入ってすぐ正面にユキノシタが今咲いています。白い可憐な花で、小さな妖精たちがたくさん飛んでいるようです。

PINK KNOTWEED IN FULL BLOOM (金平糖のようなヒメツルソバの花が満開)

 

The pink knotweed (Persicaria capitata) is a creeping perennial with small, kompeito-like flowers, ideal as a groundcover. It produces a very beautiful landscape, especially in autumn when it produces many flowers and the leaves gradually turn red.

The leaves usually turn red in late November, but this year the leaves have not turned much yet. However, the weather has been getting colder over the past week or so, so we expect the leaves to turn soon. In winter, some of the above-ground parts die, but they sprout back vigorously in spring.

ヒメツルソバは匍匐性の多年草で、金平糖のような小さな花をつけ、グランドカバーに最適です。特に秋にはたくさんの花をつけて、次第に葉が紅葉してとても美しい景観をつくります。

11月下旬には通常は葉が紅葉しますが、今年はまだあまり紅葉していません。しかし、ここ1週間ほど寒い日が多くなってきていますので、間もなく紅葉すると思います。冬には地上部の一部が枯れますが、春にはまた元気に芽吹きます。
