Petit English Garden of MARPLE & POIROT

My wife and I started gardening in Fukuoka (Japan) in 2003. There was nothing but muddy clayey sloping land. At the beginning we made several structure such as steps and paths, and planted turf, fruit trees, roses, herbs etc. In 2010, we visited several famous English gardens, including Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Mottisfont Abbey Garden and Hidcote Manor Garden. We were shocked by the glory of those gardens. Since then, we have been trying to make small but glorious gardens by ourselves.

庭の紹介

　夫婦で庭づくりを福岡の郊外で2003年に始めました.　赤土むきだしの斜面にまず階段や園路をつくって芝をはり、果樹やバラ、ハーブなどを植えました.

　2010年にイギリスの有名なガーデンの、シシングハースト、モティスフォントアビー、ヒドコートマナーなどを回り、その素晴らしさに圧倒され、それから自分たちで小さくても素晴らしい庭をめざして庭づくりをつづけています.

PRUNING ALOCASIA ODORA (クワズイモの剪定)

The shade garden is situated where the morning sun shines, but during the day it lies in the shadow of the garden room and receives almost no sunlight. At the back of the shade garden, on the slope, Alocasia odora is growing. Over several years, its stems have grown thick and tall, and its leaves have become large, to the point where they now obstruct the morning sun reaching the front part of the shade garden. The lycoris at the edge of the shade garden extend their leaves after flowering in autumn, but the large leaves of the Alocasia completely cover them, blocking all sunlight. Therefore, this time, I carried out a severe pruning of the Alocasia.

シェードガーデンは朝日があたるところにあり、昼間はガーデンルームの陰になってほとんど日は当たりません。シェードガーデンの奥の斜面にはクワズイモが育っています。数年が経過して茎が太く高くなり、葉も大きくなって、手前にあるシェードガーデンの朝日を妨げるようんなりました。シェードガーデンの縁にあるリコリスは秋の開花のあとに葉を伸ばしてきますが、その上をクワズイモの大きな葉が覆ってしまって、日がまったく当たりません。そこで、今回はクワズイモの強剪定をしました。

I cut several of the thick stems at the base and removed almost all the leaves extending towards the front. As severe winter frosts will freeze the leaves, pruning them now is good management practice. We chopped the cut leaf stalks into small pieces and placed them in the compost bin.

手前にある太い茎を何本も地際で切り、手前に伸びる葉もほとんど切りました。冬に強い寒気がくると葉は凍ってしまうので、今のうちに切っておくのもよい管理法なのです。剪定した葉の柄は小さく切って堆肥容器に入れました。

The morning sunlight in the shade garden has improved considerably.

シェードガーデンの朝の日あたりが大変良くなりました。

UNCANNY REDS OF AN AUTUMN EQUINOX MORNING (秋の彼岸の朝、妖しい赤)

With the arrival of the autumn equinox, mornings and evenings have finally grown slightly cooler. And the red spider lily, which blooms during this equinox period, has properly begun to flower. In the reddish glow of the dawn, its distinctive red, oddly shaped flower looked somewhat eerie. Behind them, the red berries of the Alocacia odora hung, their peculiar form contributing to the same eerie world. Within a mere thirty minutes, the light changed to normal, and that eeriness vanished.

秋の彼岸を迎えてやっと朝晩がわずかに涼しくなりました。そしてお彼岸に咲く彼岸花がちゃんと咲きだしました。朝焼けの赤みがかった光の中で、赤くて独特の形のその花が少し不気味にみえました。その奥にはクワズイモの赤い実がついていて、その異形とともにやはり不気味な世界を作っていました。僅か30分ほどで普通の光に変わって、その不気味さも消え去りました。

UNIQUE FLOWERS OF ALOCASIA (クワズイモの個性的な花)

Alocasia odora is an evergreen perennial herb of the Araceae family, with leaves that look like they could be used as an umbrella when large. It is often grown as houseplants. In our garden it is grown from seed and over the years has grown very large. It flowers a lot at this time of year and has a very unique shape. It produces many red berries, which birds eat and carry the seeds.

クワズイモはサトイモ科の常緑性多年草で、大きくなると傘がわりに使えるようになるような葉が特徴的です。観葉植物としてもよく育てられています。私たちの庭では種から育てて、数年でとても大きく育っています。この時期はたくさん花をつけますが、その形がとてもユニークです。たくさんの赤い実がついて、鳥たちが食べて種を運びます。

FLOWERS OF ALOCASIA ODORA (クワズイモの花)

Alocasia odora has leaves up to a maximum length of over 1 metre.

But its flowers are small and inconspicuous in colour and shape.

Four flower buds grow together and one of it has opened.

The flower is really odd shaped.

It bears many red berries.

クワズイモは葉の長径が最大1メートルを超えます

しかしその花は目立たない色や形をしています

四つの花の蕾が育ってきて、うち一つが開きました

本当に変わった形の花です

赤い実をたくさんつけます

COLD DAMAGE TO ELEPHANT EAR (クワズイモが寒波でやられました)

The giant upright elephant ear or Alocasia odora is a weakly cold-tolerant plant. It is characterised by its large, elephant-eared leaves. Every winter the leaves wither and die from the cold, but last week's strong cold spell caused them to shrivel up and die all at once.

クワズイモは耐寒性の弱い植物です. 像の耳のような大きな葉が特徴です. 毎年冬には葉は寒さで枯れていきますが、先週の強い寒波のために、一気に葉が萎れて枯れていっています.

Leaf stalks are softening and twisting and leaves are becoming discoloured.

But again, we expect the base of the plant to remain intact and sprout in spring.

葉柄は柔らかくなってねじ曲がり、葉は変色してきています.

でも今回も植物の基部は枯れずに残って、春には芽吹いてくれるものと期待しています.

BEAUTIFUL FOLIAGE ON AN AUTUMN MORNING (秋の朝のシェードガーデンの緑)

The shade garden on the north-east side of the Garden room gets no sun except morning sun, and with a plum tree in the centre, it is the perfect place for plants that don't like direct sunlight .

The area tends to be dark, so I have planted spotted varieties such as Solomon’s seal, Liriope muscari, hosta, spider plant and acanthus to add brightness.

At this time of year, most of the leaves of the hostas are still on the ground and the acanthus is still leafing out and looking beautiful after its summer dormancy. The spotted acanthus in the urn-shaped pots have not yet awoken from dormancy and only the creeping wire vine is growing.

The giant elephant-eared Alocasia odora leaves are a beautiful green presence that has suffered little damage from strong typhoon winds.

ガーデンルームの北東側にあるシェードガーデンは朝日以外は日が当たらず、中央にスモモの木があって、直射日光が苦手な植物には最適の場所です.

暗くなりがちな場所なので、アマドコロ、ヤブラン、ギボウシ、オリヅルラン、アカンサスなどの斑入りの品種を植えて明るさを加えています.

この季節、まだギボウシの葉は大半残っていて、夏の休眠期を終えたアカンサスも葉を茂らせていて、美しさを保っています. 壺形の鉢の斑入りのアカンサスはまだ休眠から目覚めておらず、ワイヤープランツだけが茂っています.

巨大な象の耳のようなクワズイモの葉は、台風の強風の被害も少なく、美しい緑色で存在感を示しています.
