FABULOUS FLOWER SPIKES OF ECHIUM CANDICANS (エキウムの素晴らしい花穂)

The showy flower spikes of Echium candicans or Pride of Madeira are growing, 

and they have started to bear a number of small purple flowers. 

 エキウム・カンディカンスのすばらしい花穂が伸びてきて

無数の小さな紫の花を咲かせ始めています.

I bought two young plants in autumn 2015.  

As some leaves were dying, I worried about whether it will grow well.  

I grew them at the windowsill, and fortunately, they slowly grew a bit larger.  

 平成27年の秋に苗を2つ買いました.

葉の一部が枯れていて、うまく育つか心配しました.

窓辺で育てましたが、幸い少し大きくなりました.

In March 2016, I planted them in the renewed border garden.  

 去年の3月にリニューアルしたボーダー花壇に苗を植え付けました.

They grew very well in the border

 (this photo was shot in last September). 

花壇ではとても順調に育ちました.

Echium candicans is not hardy, and we protected them in cold days of winter. 

エキウムは耐寒性が弱いので、冬の寒い日にはおおいをしました. 

They've grown so large that the arbour seat looks much smaller. 

とても大きく育ったので、アーバーシートがとても小さく見えます.

THE NEW BORDER NOW (新しいボーダーの今)

I renewed a border bed in February and planted plants in March. 

Now the plants had grown well and some of them are in bloom.

二月にボーダー花壇をリニューアルし、三月に苗を植えました

そして今、ずいぶん大きく育って、いくつも花をつけています

Catmint, dusty miller and linaria in the left, Petunia Bluette in a container, 

coleus and conifer in two pots, and nigella, clematis and calla in the right.  

左にはキャットミントとシロタエギク、そしてリナリア、

コンテナにはペチュニア・ブリエッタ

二つのポットにはコレウスと子にファー

そして右にはニゲラとクレマチス、カラー

PERENNIALS & ROSES PLANTED IN THE BORDER (ボーダーへの多年草とバラの植栽)

It was hot this afternoon

because it's sunny and the temperature rose up to 23.5 degrees Celsius. 

We planted roses and perennials in the border. 

After preparing soil, which was a real manual labour, 

we reconsider and finally determined the planting scheme.  

今日は晴れて、午後には23.5度まで温度も上昇、

暑い一日でした. 

ボーダーにバラと多年草を植えつけました.

まさしく肉体労働の土の準備のあと、

もう一度植えつけの計画を考えて最終的に決めました.

In the back of the border, rose seedlings were planted. 

On the left, three seedlings which I grew from seeds of 'Constance Spry'.  

Three seedlings have different characteristics; 

one of them has red stems and the others have green ones.  

ボーダーの奥にはバラの実生苗を植えます.

左側には「コンスタンス・スプライ」の種から育てた苗です. 

3つの苗はそれぞれ異なる性質を持っていて、

一つは幹が赤いのですが、他の二つはグリーンです.

On the right, three seedlings grown up from seeds of 'Gertrude Jekyll' were planted. 

One of them have already started to grow leaves.  

右側には「ガートルード・ジェキル」の種から育てた実生苗です.

一つはもう葉を出しています.

In the back of far left, 

Hardenbergia violacea 'Happy Wanderer' (Purple Vine Lilac) and Euphorbia were planted.  

A large trunk in the front is Campsis radicans (Trumpet Vine).  

一番左の奥にはハーデンベルギア（紫の花が咲くつる性植物）と

ユーフォルビアを植えます. 

手前の太い幹はアメリカノウゼンカズラです.

In the left part of the border front, we planted

Nepeta (Catmint),

Jacobaea maritima (silver ragwort),

Linaria purpurea (white and purple flowers),

Echium candicans,

Margaret,

and Euryops Daisy

Along the narrow brick path, two kinds of rosemary plants

 (pink and Majolica purple) were planted, 

and two clematis plants ('Princes Diana' and 'Rouguchi' ) in the pots

were put on the concrete basis. 

細いレンガの小道に沿って2種類のローズマリーを植え

Astilbe 'Color Flash' (without leaves now)

Hemerocallis 'Catherine Woodbery' 

and Echium candicans

ALL KINDS OF WEATHER ON THE LAST SATURDAY OF FEBRUARY (めまぐるしく変わる今日の天気)

We've had all kinds of weather today.  

In the morning (the weather was acceptable), we dug up two shrub roses and a camellia, 

and made a base of a garden item that I am planning to make by ourselves. 

今日はめまぐるしく変わる天気でした. 

午前中はまずまずの天気で、木立性バラ2本と椿を掘り出しましたあと、

自作予定の庭のアイテムの基礎を作りました.

A small camellia tree was also dug up and replanted to a plot behind the white fence.　
小さな椿の木も掘り上げ、白いフェンスの向こうに植えました.

At noon, it thundered suddenly, and then there was heavy rain with small hail.  

Ｉ covered the base with curing sheet in a hurry.  

お昼に急に雷が鳴り、小さな雹を伴う激しい雨が降り

急いで基礎を養生シートでおおいました.

It became partly sunny two hours later, and we went down to the garden 

and stated pruning and training of roses on the arches.  

2時間後、少し晴れてきたので庭に下りて

アーチのバラの剪定と誘引を始めました.

However, it began to rain again, and we couldn't finish pruning.  

しかし、また雨が降りだして、剪定は今日は終わりませんでした.

PRUNING & TRAINING KUMQUAT (金柑の剪定と誘引)

It was cold but fine today, and I pruned and trained a kumquat (Kinkan)
as a kind of fan to the wooden fence.  

I cut branches that were growing directly towards or away from the fence, 

and trained side-branches horizontally and tied them to the welded wire mesh.

This is, I think, a attractive way to grow tree fruit,
and takes up next to no room in the border.

今日は寒いけど良い天気で、
金柑を剪定して板塀へ一種の扇仕立てに誘引しました.
手前と塀に向かう枝を切り、
横の枝を水平に誘引して溶接金網に結んで固定しました.

これは果樹を育てる魅力的な方法だと思いますし、
ボーダーでほとんどスペースを要しません.  

I harvested and ate a few fruits.  

They are seedless and, therefore, quite easy to eat whole. 

(need not to expel seeds)

何個か実をとって食べました. 

種無しなので、丸ごと簡単に食べられます.

RENEWAL OF THE BORDER (ボーダー花壇のリニューアル)

The border on the east side of our garden was narrow in depth
because many trees had grown on the boundary to the neighbour (a ruined house).
Last week we felled tall trees.
It has made more space and improved sunshine on the border.
So, we have got down to renewing the border.

隣家との境界にあった木々のために庭の東側のボーダーは奥行きは狭かったのですが
先週木を伐採し、スペースが広くなって日当たりも良くなりました.
そこでボーダーのリニューアルに取り掛かりました.

This is a photo before cutting down the trees.  The border was only four feet depth.

この写真は木を伐採する前で、ボーダーは奥行きが1メートルほどでした

After felling the trees, the border became six feet depth, 

and much more sunlight shines on the border. 

伐採後はボーダーは奥行き２メートルほどになり、

日当たりもよくなりました.

We set up metal pipe posts with concrete blocks for fixing wooden panels.  

The posts were fixed using concrete.  

鉄管とコンクリートブロックを使って、木製のパネル固定用の支柱を立てました.
支柱はコンクリートで固定しています.

The concrete blocks were painted black, 

and the wooden panels were fixed to the posts.  

コンクリートブロックは黒く塗って、木製のパネルを支柱に固定しました. 

And finally, welded wire mesh was fit in front of the wooden panels, 

which we'll use to train climbing roses, clematis etc.  

最後に、溶接金網をパネルの前に取り付けました.
つるバラやクレマチスなどの誘引に使う予定です.

Marple is planning the planting scheme of the border now.
It will change according to circumstances, or we'll plant in a haphazard way:-)


マープルさんのボーダーの植栽計画立案が現在進行中です.
臨機応変に、つまりは行き当たりばったりで植えていくことになるでしょう（笑）
