BLUEBERRY FLOWERS AND GROWING LEAVES OF ROSE

It was fine this morning, and I walk around our garden checking pests on leaves.
Blueberry bushes are in bloom now, and some bees have come,
however, bumblebees haven't come yet.

Leaves of rose are growing and they look so beautiful in morning sunshine.

HERBS PLANTED IN A NEW BED

Today was the first day of gardening this year.
We made a simple raised bed beside a stone wall behind the white wooden fence
for herb seedlings which we bought four days ago.

We used a corrugated plastic sheet for retaining soil,
and add compost and leaf mold in it.

Herb seedlings of fennel, common mallow and marsh mallow were planted
(with originally growing Farfugium japonicum).

SALVIA IN HERB BEDS

Two kinds of salvia is in bloom in the terraced herb beds now.

Salvia guaranitica is erroneously called 'meadow sage' in Japan.   Its leaves have a fresh mint green color, and a distinct scent.  It spreads very vigorously through its spreading roots, and repeatedly flowers after cutting short.

Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna' is noted for its vivid indigo flowers along deep purple-black stems and it looks stunning.  This season, borage had grown too large and it disturbed growth of the salvia.

A beautiful May is over today, and a rainy season will come soon.

The gates to the kitchen garden (right) and the main garden (left) will be opened on 16th (Sat) and 17th (Sun) May.

The kitchen garden (potager) contains fruit trees, vegetables and flowers.  It is surrounded by espalier apple trees and a grape vine.  In pentagonal beds, asparagus is growing with poppy and campion.  Swiss chard, lettuce and onion was planted in the pentagonal cold frames.  In triangular beds, potatoes are planted with marigold.  In the square bed, wild meadow flowers with a standard rose.

This photo of the main garden taken from the window of our cottage shows fresh green leaves.  Flowers of rose, peony and foxglove will soon be in bloom.

Behind the bench, climbing roses are ready to flower in a dozen of days.

Most of herbs in the terraced beds have already grown large enough to harvest.

We, Marple and Poirot, are looking forward to meeting many visitors, who love gardening.
Please take this opportunity to visit our garden.

TERRACED HERB BEDS NOW (ハーブの段々畑の今)

In the herb beds, borage is in full bloom, and German camomile is also started to flower.

In the lower bed, mint has started to grow vigorously (on the right).

Lavender, borage and woodland sage (salvia nemorosa) in the middle bed.

In the upper bed, we planted salvia guaranitica with margaret.

We will cut short mint, borage and camomile in April to make them neat when we open our garden for charity.

ABOUT TERRACED HERB BEDS II

In the fourth year of the terraced beds, we planted many kinds of herbs there.  So, this year, 2012, was substantially the beginning of 'the terraced herb beds'.

And now, in March 2015, some have already grown large and others are small or even does not appear yet.  But in a month or two, we'll be in a beautiful season with green leaves and stunning flowers.

ABOUT TERRACED HERB BEDS

Six years ago, my wife and I moved the wooden-sleeper path from the west side to the center of the slope, and made terraced beds for vegetable and herb.

We bought pressure-treated timber at a local DIY shop for the frames of terraced beds.  Its size was almost the same as real sleepers.

2009/4/19

At first, we made bases with concrete blocks for laying wooden frames of beds.  It was a bit hard work for us, and our son helped us.

Then the frames made of pressure-treated timber were fixed with large cramp irons.

Finally large amount of potting compost was filled in the beds.

2009/6/6
In the first year, we mainly planted vegetables because there was no place for vegs elsewhere.
The photograph below shows sweet potato in the bed.

We harvested sweet potatoes in November.

2009/11/8
In the second year 2010, potatoes were planted in March and harvested in June.

2010/6/3

2010/6/3
In 2011, we started to plant herbs in the beds in addition to vegs, because we obtained a plot for a kitchen garden.
We planted lavender, rose geranium, perilla, german chamomile.
