庭の紹介

　夫婦で庭づくりを福岡の郊外で2003年に始めました.　赤土むきだしの斜面にまず階段や園路をつくって芝をはり、果樹やバラ、ハーブなどを植えました.
　2010年にイギリスの有名なガーデンの、シシングハースト、モティスフォントアビー、ヒドコートマナーなどを回り、その素晴らしさに圧倒され、それから自分たちで小さくても素晴らしい庭をめざして庭づくりをつづけています.

SWEET POTATOES ROASTED OVER A WOOD FIRE (薪で焼き芋)

 

Roasting sweet potatoes on the barbecue oven in the potager is an annual winter tradition. Amidst a strong cold snap, with temperatures hovering around 1°C even during the day and light snow flurries, we roasted sweet potatoes again this year. We burn branches from pruning garden trees and wood from old, dismantled garden structures in the barbecue oven. The sweet potatoes are wrapped in damp kitchen towels and aluminium foil, then gradually heated inside the grill. They're ready when soft to the touch after about 30 minutes to an hour. This year's sweet potatoes roasted beautifully and were delicious.


ポタジェのバーベキューコンロでの焼き芋は毎年冬の恒例行事です。強い寒波で気温が昼間でも1度前後で小雪の舞う中、今年も焼き芋をしました。庭木の剪定などで出た枝や、老朽化して撤去した庭の構造物の木材などをバーベキューコンロで燃やします。サツマイモは濡らしたキッチンタオルとアルミホイルで包んで、コンロの中で徐々に加熱します。３０分から１時間ほどで触って柔らかくなったら出来上がりです。今年もうまく焼けておいしくいただきました。

A LIGHT COVERING OF SNOW IN OUR GARDENS (うっすら雪化粧した我が家の庭)

 

The strongest cold front of the winter arrived in Kyushu yesterday, and when I woke this morning, the garden was lightly dusted with snow. It was the first time this winter that snow had settled. I went down into the garden, walked around, and enjoyed the snowy scenery. Please join me in watching the video of the snowy garden.


昨日からこの冬最強の寒気が九州にも来て、今朝起きたら庭はうっすらと雪化粧していました。この冬初めての積雪です。庭に下りて庭を回って雪景色を楽しみました。皆さんも一緒に動画で雪の庭をご覧ください。

THE FIRST SNOW OF THE NEW YEAR (正月の初雪)

 

On the morning of the second of January, snow began to fall. It was the first time this winter I had seen snow falling in the garden. Small snow clouds arrived one after another, accompanied by a strong north wind, and in between them the sun would shine for a moment. It was the kind of weather typical of the depths of winter when a cold spell arrives. In the end, the snow did not settle.


一月二日の朝から雪が降りました。この冬初めて庭で雪が降るのを見ました。強い北風とともに小さな雪雲が次々とやってきて、その合間には一瞬日が照ったりもします。寒気がやってきた真冬特有のお天気です。結局雪は積もることはありませんでした。

THE COLD WAVE BROUGHT SNOW (寒波が雪をつれて来た)

 

The strongest cold spell of the winter arrived and for the first time it snowed occasionally during the day and some snow piled up at night. The water in the small fountain froze for the first time this year. In times like this, we have to stay indoors where it's warm, instead of working in the garden.


この冬最強の寒波がやってきて、初めて昼間から時々雪が降り、夜には少し雪が積もりました。小さな噴水の水が凍ったのも今年初めてでした。こんな時は庭仕事はせずに、暖かい室内で過ごすしかないですね。

THE SECOND COLD WAVE BROUGHT A LIGHT COVERING OF SNOW (二度目の寒波でうっすら雪化粧)

 

This is the second strong cold snap of the winter, following on from the one before Christmas. Snow cloud after snow cloud has drifted in and light snowflakes are falling. The garden has also been covered with a light dusting of snow. If snow piles up at night, it will be difficult to go to work in the morning. I pray it doesn't pile up.


クリスマス前につづいて、この冬2度目の強い寒波がやってきました。雪雲が次から次へ来たから流れ込んで、小雪が舞っています。庭もうっすらと雪化粧してきました。夜に雪が積もると朝の出勤が大変です。積もらないように祈っています。

BAKING POTATOES IN THE BARBECUE OVEN IN THE POTAGER (ポタジェのバーベキューコンロで焼き芋)

 

On a cold day with snow and sleet, we made baked sweet potatoes in the potager. Burn prunings and waste wood on a barbecue stove to roast sweet potatoes and potatoes. After wrapping them in wet newspaper, they are wrapped in aluminium foil and placed under the fire. Depending on the size of the potatoes, it takes approximately 30 minutes to an hour. The freshly roasted hot potatoes are delicious. A regular treat on a cold winter day


雪やみぞれの降る寒い日にポタジェで焼き芋をつくりました。バーベキューコンロで剪定枝や廃材を燃やして、サツマイモとジャガイモを焼きます。濡れた新聞紙でくるんだ後、アルミホイルで包んで、焚火の下に入れます。イモの大きさにもよりますが、およそ30分から1時間で出来上がりです。焼きたてのアツアツの芋を美味しく頂きました。寒い冬の日の恒例の楽しみです。

THE COLDEST GARDEN IN SEVEN YEARS (七年ぶりの寒さの庭)

 

Yesterday and today we have been hit by the coldest wave in seven years, comparable to the strong cold wave of January 2016. 

North-westerly winds of over 10 metres per second blew and snow fell at times. 

Yesterday the temperature fell by 10 degrees in half a day, from 7 degrees in the morning to minus 3 degrees in the evening. 

The cold wave that hit on the same day in 2016 killed some of the less cold-resistant garden plants, so this time potted plants were brought indoors and ground plants were covered. 

The water in the small fountain and pond is frozen, but the killifish are safe. 

Alocasia odora with leaves as big as elephant ears is vulnerable to the cold, its leaves are wilted and it is definitely going to die. But I think it will leaf out again in spring. 


昨日から今日は、2016年1月の強い寒波に匹敵する7年ぶりの寒波に襲われています. 

秒速10メートルを超す北西の風が吹き、時々雪が降りました. 

昨日は朝の気温が7度あったのが、夕方にはマイナス3度まで半日で10度も下がりました. 

2016年の同じ日に襲った寒波は、耐寒性が弱い庭の植物をいくつか枯らしてしまったので、今回は鉢植えの植物は室内に取り込み、地植えの植物にはカバーを掛けました. 

小さな噴水や池の水は凍っていますが、メダカは無事です. 

象の耳のように大きな葉をもつクワズイモは寒さに弱く、葉は萎れてしまっていて、間違いなく枯れそうです. でも、春にはまた葉を出してくるだろうと思います.
