Petit English Garden of MARPLE & POIROT

My wife and I started gardening in Fukuoka (Japan) in 2003. There was nothing but muddy clayey sloping land. At the beginning we made several structure such as steps and paths, and planted turf, fruit trees, roses, herbs etc. In 2010, we visited several famous English gardens, including Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Mottisfont Abbey Garden and Hidcote Manor Garden. We were shocked by the glory of those gardens. Since then, we have been trying to make small but glorious gardens by ourselves.

庭の紹介

　夫婦で庭づくりを福岡の郊外で2003年に始めました.　赤土むきだしの斜面にまず階段や園路をつくって芝をはり、果樹やバラ、ハーブなどを植えました.

　2010年にイギリスの有名なガーデンの、シシングハースト、モティスフォントアビー、ヒドコートマナーなどを回り、その素晴らしさに圧倒され、それから自分たちで小さくても素晴らしい庭をめざして庭づくりをつづけています.

SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE LAST WATERMELON HARVEST, BUT... (スイカの最後の収穫のはずが・・)

As for the small watermelons in the two triangular raised beds in the potager, I had already finished harvesting one of the beds and cleared it away. I set about harvesting the single remaining fruit on the other raised bed, intending to clear away the vines afterwards.

ポタジェの三角形の2つのレイズドベッドの小玉スイカは、一方のレイズドベッドが収穫を終えてすでに片付けました。もう一つのレイズドベッドに残っていた1個の実も収穫して、ツルを片付けようと思って作業を開始しました。

First, I harvested the last watermelon. It weighed just over 800 grams.

まず、最後のスイカの実を収穫しました。800グラム余りありました。

I then tried to pull the vines out, but as I did so, I discovered another fruit that had been hidden away. I harvested that one as well.

そして、ツルを引っ張って抜き取ろうとしましたが、その時にもう一個隠れていた実がみつかりました。それも収穫しました。

Pulling the vines further, a small fruit appeared from the very back. As this was too small to harvest, I decided not to pull up the plant just yet.

さらにツルを引っ張ると今度は小さな実が一番奥から現れました。これは収穫するには小さいので、もうしばらく株は引き抜かないことにしました。

Discovering these two unexpected watermelons was a pleasant surprise. I put up a badger-proof net and decided to wait until the small fruit grows a little larger and is ready for harvest.

想定外の2個のスイカの実の発見はうれしい出来事でした。アナグマ除けのネットをかけて、小さい実がもう少し大きくなって収穫できるまで待つことにしました。
