Petit English Garden of MARPLE & POIROT

My wife and I started gardening in Fukuoka (Japan) in 2003. There was nothing but muddy clayey sloping land. At the beginning we made several structure such as steps and paths, and planted turf, fruit trees, roses, herbs etc. In 2010, we visited several famous English gardens, including Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Mottisfont Abbey Garden and Hidcote Manor Garden. We were shocked by the glory of those gardens. Since then, we have been trying to make small but glorious gardens by ourselves.

庭の紹介

　夫婦で庭づくりを福岡の郊外で2003年に始めました.　赤土むきだしの斜面にまず階段や園路をつくって芝をはり、果樹やバラ、ハーブなどを植えました.

　2010年にイギリスの有名なガーデンの、シシングハースト、モティスフォントアビー、ヒドコートマナーなどを回り、その素晴らしさに圧倒され、それから自分たちで小さくても素晴らしい庭をめざして庭づくりをつづけています.

HAND POLLINATION OF PEARS (洋梨の人工授粉)

The pear trees are in bloom. It has been over ten years since I planted La France and Le Lectier pears in the Bluebell Garden, but they have hardly ever flowered and have never borne fruit. Just as I was about to give up and cut them down, flowers began to appear in several places. In the hope that they might bear even a few fruits, I carried out some hand-pollination.

洋梨の花が咲いています。ブルーベルの庭にラフランスとルレクチェを植えて10年以上経ちますが、ほとんど花が咲かず、実がついたこともありません。あきらめて切ってしまおうと思っていたら何か所も花が咲いてきました。少しでも実がつくようにと、人工授粉をしました。

In the potager, the pear tree—grafted onto an apple branch five years ago—is in bloom. Three years ago, it bore its first small fruit. I have hand-pollinated these flowers as well. I am hoping it will bear fruit again this year.

ポタジェでは5年前にリンゴの枝に接ぎ木した洋梨に花が咲いています。3年前には初めて小さな実がつきました。こちらの花も一緒に人工授粉をしました。今年も実がついてくれることを祈っています。

MID-SUMMER PRUNING WORK (真夏の剪定作業)

In summer, there is pruning work to be done on fruit and flowering trees. This time we pruned pears. This is the pruning of new branches that have emerged this year from horizontally trained branches. Cut them short, leaving a few buds. As the trees are on the slope of the Bluebell garden, I used a telescoping tree pruner to cut them from the arbour seat above.

夏には果樹や花木の剪定作業があります。今回は洋ナシの剪定をしました。水平方向に誘引した枝から今年出た新枝の剪定です。数個の芽を残して短く切ります。ブルーベルの庭の斜面にあるので、上の屋根付きベンチの所から高枝鋏を使って切りました。

The wisteria that is being trained to the back of the brick wall also needs pruning as it grew new branches again in mid-summer. I will prune it in the near future.

レンガ塀の裏側に誘引しているフジも真夏にまた新枝を伸ばしたので剪定が必要です。近いうちに剪定するつもりです。

THE FIRST FRUIT ON A PEAR BRANCH GRAFTED ONTO AN APPLE (リンゴに接木した洋梨の枝に初めてついた実)

Branches of pear were grafted onto Potager's espalier apples in February 2021.

The successfully grafted apple variety is 'Fuji' and the two pear varieties are 'Le Lectier' and 'La France'.

Last spring, one year later, they flowered but did not bear fruit.

This year it flowered again and I noticed that there was fruit in one place. There is only one on a grafted branch of Le Lectier. I observed it from time to time, thinking that it could drop at any time.

It grew little by little, but around August it almost stopped growing.

The other day I found a fallen one. It was still hard, so I left it indoors for a while, and when it softened a little, I tried it. I was a bit moved by the taste of the pear.

ポタジェの垣根仕立てのリンゴに、2021年の2月に洋ナシの枝の接ぎ木をしました.

接ぎ木がうまく行ったリンゴの品種は「フジ」で、洋ナシの品種は「ル・レクチェ」と「ラ・フランス」の二つの品種です.

一年経った去年の春に花が咲きましたが、実はつきませんでした.

今年も花は咲いて、一か所だけ実がついているのに気づきました. ル・レクチェの接ぎ木の枝に1個だけです. いつ落果してもおかしくないな、と思いながら時々観察していました.

少しずつは大きくなっていましたが、8月ごろにはほとんど成長は止まりました.

そして先日、落ちているのを見つけました. まだ硬いのでしばらく室内に置いておき、少し軟らかくなったので食べてみました. 確かに洋ナシの味がして、ちょっと感動でした.

PEARS GRAFTED ONTO APPLES FLOWER (リンゴに接ぎ木した洋ナシが開花)

The pears that provide shade for the bluebells in the bluebell garden are now flowering a little. I have grafted its branches onto the apple trees in the Potager, which are also flowering now. It has not borne fruit yet, but we hope it will this year.

ブルーベルの庭でブルーベルに木陰をつくる洋ナシが、今少し花を咲かせています. その枝をポタジェのリンゴの木たちに接ぎ木をしていますが、そちらも今咲いてきています. まだ実をつけたことはありませんが、今年こそ実がついたらと願っています.

POLLINATION OF PEARS GRAFTED ONTO APPLES (リンゴに接ぎ木した洋ナシの受粉)

The potager is looking more like spring and the flower buds on some of the espalier apple branches are swelling a little. Pear branches were grafted onto the apple branches last spring. These are branches of two varieties in the Bluebell garden, La France and Le Lectier. About five of each were grafted and more than half are now established. And the other day I found flower buds in four places.

Every day I went to see if flowers were opening, and flowers of one graft from each of the two grafted varieties had started to open. In the bluebell garden, there were a few La France flowers in bloom, so I pollinated among these flowers.

I don't know if they will bear fruit for the first time this year, but I am looking forward to the day when there will be pear fruits all over the garden.

ポタジェは春らしくなって、垣根仕立てのリンゴの枝の一部の花芽も少し膨らんできています. 昨年春にこのリンゴの枝に洋ナシの枝を接ぎ木しました. ブルーベルの庭にある二つの品種、ラ・フランスとル・レクチェの枝です. それぞれ5つほど接ぎ木して、半分以上が生着しました. そして、先日4か所で花芽を見つけました.

毎日花が開いていないか見に行っていたら、二つの品種のそれぞれ1本の接ぎ木の花が開き始めていました. ブルーベルの庭ではラ・フランスが少し開花していたので、これらの花の間で受粉作業を行いました.

今年初めて実をつけてくれるかどうかは分かりませんが、そのうちに庭のあちこちで洋ナシが実る日を楽しみに待っていたいと思います.
