TOAD LILIES ARE IN FULL BLOOM (ホトトギスが満開)

 

The Japanese name 'Hototogisu' comes from the resemblance of the spots on the petals to the spots on the breast of a bird called the Hototogisu (The lesser cuckoo). 

The colour of the flowers appears more reddish in the afternoon sun, but more purple in the shade.

A bumblebee came to the flower to suck the nectar.

ホトトギスという花は、その花びらにある斑点が、ホトトギスと言う鳥の胸の斑点と似ているということで名前がついています. 

花の色は午後の日差しで赤みが強く見えますが、日陰では紫の色調が強くなります. 

ハナバチがきて、花の中にもぐりこんで蜜を吸っていました.

SCARBOROUGH FAIR (スキャボロフェア)

 

One of David Austin's English Roses, Scarborough Fair, is a very good variety and a favourite of mine. Its best feature is its strong four-season flowering habit. Every time a new branch grows, a flower appears at the top of it. The pretty colours and shapes of the flowers are also a great attraction. In autumn, it flowers again in profusion. It will continue to flower until early winter. 

デビッドオースチンのイングリッシュローズの一つ、スキャボロフェアはとてもよい品種で気に入っています. その最大の特徴は強い四季咲き性です. 新しい枝が伸びる度にその先端に花を咲かせるのです. そして、その可愛らしい色と形の花も大きな魅力です. 秋になってまたたくさん花をつけています. 初冬まで咲き続けます.

HORTICULTURE STUDENTS VISITED FOR PRACTICAL TRAINING (学生さんが実習にやってきました)

 The students of the college of landscape architecture visited our garden as part of their environmental volunteer training. 

I went around the garden with the students and at the end we pruned the potager boxes together. It was really nice to see the hedges looking so good. 

The students asked a lot of questions and were very enthusiastic. The landscape designer who designed the brick wall in our garden is also a graduate of the college. 

カレッジの園芸コースの学生5人が、カリキュラムの実習の一つとして、うちの庭に見学およびボランティアにやってきてくれました. 

庭を回って、ポタジェのボックスの剪定をしてもらいました. とても綺麗になって、本当にありがたかったです. 

学生たちからはたくさんの質問がありました. とても意欲的だと感じました. うちの庭のレンガ塀をデザインしてくれたのも、このカレッジの卒業生でした. 

Seeing the young students reminded me of my own school days. 

I hope all my friends are doing well.

若い学生たちを見て、自分の学生時代を思い出しました. 

あの頃の友人たち、みんな元気でやっているかな？

BLUE AND PURPLE SALVIAS IN OCTOBER (十月の青と紫のサルビアたち)

 

サルビアはたくさんの種類がありますが、私たちの庭でも数種類のサルビアを育てています. 今日は青い花と紫の花を紹介します.

最初は青い花をつけるサルビアガラニチカです. 明るい緑色の美しい葉をもち、花は黒いガクに深い青色の花をつけます. 時には草丈が2メートルほどにまで成長します. 夏から秋にかけて咲き続けます. 

紫色の花をつけるのは、アメジストセージです. ベルベットのような柔らかい花です. 

春に咲いて、また秋に咲きます.

HOW TO MAKE GLASS DECORATION ON THE STEEL PIPE (単管パイプ飾りの作り方)

 

The branches of the apple hedge that surrounds the potager are supported by steel  pipes and a horizontal wire. They were put in place when the young trees were planted. The steel pipes are very durable, but they are not very ornamental. So we painted the pipes bright blue and put glass decorations on top of them. Today we would like to show you how to make it. 

ポタジェを囲むリンゴの垣根の枝を支えているのは、単管パイプと横に張ったワイヤーです. 苗木を植える時に設置しました. 単管パイプは耐久性に優れていますが、見かけがあまり美しくありません. そこで、パイプを鮮やかなブルーでペイントし、その上にガラス製の飾りを乗せました. 今日はその作り方を紹介したいと思います.

The first step in setting up the posts was to dig the holes. The holes are dug with a digging tool. 

支柱の設置は、まず穴堀りから始めました. 穴掘りの道具を使って穴を掘ります. 

A steel pipe is driven into the hole. The pipe was used in another part of the garden and was painted light brown. 

その穴に単管パイプを打ち込みます. この時使ったパイプは、庭の別の所で使っていたもので、明るい茶色のペンキが塗ってありました. 

The posts were set up at equal intervals between the young plants. 

苗木と苗木の中間に、等間隔に支柱を立てました. 

After that we painted it blue. 

そのあと、青いペンキを塗りました. 

I used glass jars from a 100 yen shop to decorate the posts. The lid is also made of glass. 

支柱飾りに使ったのは、100円均一のお店で買ったガラス製の瓶で、ふたもガラス製です. 

I painted the bottles with blue paint, but I painted the inside because the paint on the outside would be easily peeled off by the wind and rain. 

瓶に青いペンキを塗るのですが、外側に塗ると雨風で簡単に剝がれてしまうので、内側に塗りました. 

After it has dried, the bottle is turned upside down over the pipe. The diameter of the mouth of the bottle is only slightly larger than the diameter of the pipe, which is enough to stabilise it. 

乾いたあと、単管パイプの上に瓶をひっくり返して被せます. この瓶の口の直径はわずかにパイプの直径より大きい程度で、それだけで安定しました. 

Finally, the lid is attached to the bottom of the jar with glass glue. 

最後に、ふたを瓶の底にガラス用の接着剤で貼り付けて完成です. 

After about ten years of planting, the horizontal apple branches have grown to a large size. The pretty pink flowers appear every April and the small apples are ready to be harvested in September. 

苗木を植えて約10年が経過して、水平方向に誘引したリンゴの枝もだいぶん大きくなっています. 毎年4月に可愛らしいピンクの花が咲き、9月には小さなリンゴの実が色づいてきて収穫です.

DWARF MINI-TOMATOES ARE FLOWERING AGAIN (矮性ミニトマトがまた開花)

 

The dwarf tomatoes are growing again in the autumn and are producing a lot of flowers. 

The name of the variety is 'Tumbling Tom Red'. 

It's been cooler since last weekend, but will it still bear fruit?

If you look closely, you can see a few small fruits. 

秋に再び矮性ミニトマトが茂ってきて、たくさん花を咲かせています. 

品種名はタンブリングトムレッドです. 

先週末から涼しくなってきたけど、実がついてくれるでしょうか？

よく見たら、小さな実が少しついていました.
