The Peter Rabbit Exhibition celebrating the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter's Birth
is held now in Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art.

The organizers says in the foreword that
'The story of the world's most famous rabbit began with an illustrated letter addressed to a sick little boy.
My Dear Noel,
I don't know what to write to you, so I shall tell you a story about four little rabbits...
Born out of compassion, the blue jacket wearing rabbit protagonist and his story are still beloved today around the world after more than a hundred years. This exhibition commemorating the 150th anniversary of the author, Beatrix Potter's birth traces the origins of the Peter Rabbit series through a never before seen collection of over two hundred pieces of works and materials consisting of her original art works, sketches, favorite items and more.
Beatrix Potter loved to sketch animals and plants from an early age on. Visiting the Lake District for summer vacations with her family she developed a lifetime fascination with the amazing richness of the natural environment encountered there. Looking at her deep love of nature, it is clearly reflected in the world of the Peter Rabbit series as well. Furthermore, Beatrix not only left us with amazing works, she was also a pioneer of land conservation in an age when it was still hard for women to take on active public roles in society. She helped protect the Herdwick sheep, a species unique to the Lake District, moreover, she also worked to preserve the beauty of the Lake District's scenery and to leave it to us.
We hope you will also be touched by the universal message radiating from the charming world that Beatrix Potter has woven through her depictions of nature and animals.
Last but no least, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all concerned parties, foremost among them the National Trust for kindly lending these precious works, for their efforts involved in the realization of this exhibition.'

「世界一有名なうさぎのお話は一人の病気の少年に宛てた絵手紙から始まりました。
ノエル君へ あなたに、なんて書いたら良いのか分からないので、
４匹の小ウサギの話をしましょう-
思いやりが生んだ、青いジャケットを着たうさぎの主人公と物語は、100年以上経た今も、世界中の人に愛されています。本展は、作家のビアトリクス・ポター生誕150周年を記念して、これまでまとまって紹介されることのなかった、彼女ゆかりの直筆絵本原画やスケッチ、愛用品など200件以上の作品・資料を通じて、ピーターラビットシリーズの原点をたどっていくものです。
ビアトリクス・ポターは幼少期から動物や植物のスケッチが大好きでした。避暑地として家族と共に訪れた湖水地方で豊かな自然と出会い、その素晴らしさに生涯魅了され続けました。彼女の自然に対する深い愛情とまなざしは、ピーターラビットシリーズの世界観にも色濃く反映されています。また、ビアトリクスは素晴らしい作品を残しただけでなく、女性が社会で活躍することが難しかった時代に、自然保護活動の先駆者としても活躍しました。彼女は、湖水地方の固有種である羊を守り、さらには湖水地方の美しい景観を保護し、現代に遺したのです。
ビアトリクス・ポターが描いた自然と動物とが織りなす愛らしい世界の中に、普遍的なメッセージを感じていただければ幸いです。
