I wrote about the book ’Reading English Gardens'
written by Prof. Satoshi Ando on this blog five years ago.
I read it again these days,
and I understood about English garden much better, I think.
Today I want to write about Andrew Marvell who was mentioned in this book.
He was an English poet in the seventeenth century,
and wrote a poem 'The Garden'.
A part of it was quoted as follows.
'Fair Quiet, have I found thee here,
And Innocence, thy sister dear!
Mistaken long, I sought you then
In busy companies of men.
Your sacred plants, if here below,
Only among the plants will grow.
Society is all but rude,
To this delicious solitude.'
The author wrote that a garden was a place of seclusion from earthly life, denial of carnal pleasure and solitary meditation for this Puritan poet,
and that this poem is an important turning point of modern history of idea in England.
In 17th century, an informal or natural garden had started to take the place of a formal garden.
五年前にこのブログで安藤聡氏の「英国庭園を読む」という本を紹介しました.
そして最近また読み直し、イングリッシュガーデンの理解が進んだような気がします.
今日はこの本に紹介されたアンドリュー・マーベルについて書きたいと思います.
彼は17世紀のイギリスの詩人で、
「庭」という詩を書いています.
詩の以下の一説がこの本で紹介されています.
『麗しき静寂よ、貴女（あなた）の姿をここに見る、
そして無垢よ、静寂の親愛なる妹よ！
長い間誤解して、私は貴女たちを
賑やかな人混みの中に探し求めていた。
貴女の聖なる草花は、この下界なら、
草花の中でのみ育つのだ。
人間社会は騒々しく粗野なだけだ、
この甘美なる孤独に比べたら。』
この本の著者は、庭はこの清教徒詩人にとっては、
俗世からの隠棲、現世的快楽の否定、および孤独な瞑想の場所であって、
この詩は英国近代思想史の大分水嶺の頂点と言えると書いています.
17世紀は整形式庭園が非整形式のナチュラルな庭園にとって代わられる時代でした.
Today I want to introduce another book 'English Love Poems'
written by Takako Saito.
This book introduces 15 love poems from Shakespeare in the 16th century to Andrew Motion in the 21st century.
I found a poem entitled 'To His Coy Mistress' written by Andrew Marvell.
This poem sounds a bit different from ’The Garden'.
『Had we but ｗorld enough, and time,
This coyness Lady were no crime.
We would sit down, and think which way
To walk, and pass our long loves day.
Thou by the Indian Ganges' side
Should'st rubies find: I by the tide
Of Humber would complain. I would
Love you ten years before the Flood:
And you should if you please refuse
Till the conversion of the Jews.
My vegetable Love should grow
Vaster than empires, and more slow;
An hundred years should go to praise
Thine eyes, and on thy forehead gaze;
Two hundred to adore each breast;
But thirty thousand to the rest;
An age at least to every part,
And the last age should show your heart;
For Lady you deserve this state,
Nor would I love at lower rate.
But at my back I always hear
Times winged chariot hurrying near;
And yonder all before us lie
Deserts of vast eternity.
Thy Beauty shall no more be found;
Nor, in thy marble vault, shall sound
My echoing song: then worms shall try
That long preserved virginity:
And your quaint honour turn to dust:
And into ashes all my lust:
The grave's a fine and private place,
But none, I think, do there embrace.
Now therefore, while the youthful hue
Sits on thy skin like morning dew,
And while thy willing soul transpires

And now, like amorous birds of prey,
Rather at once our time devour
Than languish in his slow-chapt power.
Let us roll all our strength, and all
Our sweetness, up into one ball,
And tear our pleasures with rough strife
Thorough the iron gates of life:
Thus, though we cannot make our sun
Stand still, yet we will make him run.』
This reminds me of the bittersweet olden days.
Looking back, life passed by in a blink, didn't it?
So, I want to enjoy the present...
今日はもう一冊、齊藤貴子氏の本「イギリス恋愛詞華集」を紹介したいと思います.
この本では16世紀のシェークスピアから21世紀のアンドリュー・モーションまで15の恋愛詩が紹介されています.
その中で、アンドリュー・マーベルの「恥じらう恋人へ」という詩を見つけました.
前述の「庭」とはちょっと違った感じの詩です.
『もしも世界と時間が、あり余るほどあるならば、
恋人よ、この恥じらいも 罪にはならない。
腰でも下ろして、どの道行こうか思いめぐらし
日がな一日 愛し合って過ごせばいい。
君が インドのガンジス河のほとりで
ルビーを探すというのなら、僕は
ハンバー川の辺りで 文句でも垂れるとしよう。
ノアの大洪水の もう十年も前から愛している、
でもお望みなら、全ユダヤ教徒が改宗するまで
拒み続けたって構わない。
僕の繁茂性の愛情は どんな帝国よりも
広く大きく とてもゆっくり育っていくから、
君の目を褒め称え、額をじっと
見つめるのに まず百年、
両方の乳房を それぞれ賛美するのに二百年、
他のところ全部には 三万年は必要で、つまり
体のあらゆる部分に少なくとも一時代、そして
君の心を知るには 最後の審判の時までかかる。
恋人よ、君にはそれだけの価値がある、
これ以下のやり方なんかで 愛せやしない。
けれど聞こえるんだ 背後から
翼もつ「時」の戦車が凄まじい勢いでやってくる。

そこでは 君の美しさも二度とは見られず、

ちょっと楽しくもつらかった昔を思い出します.
過ぎてしまえば人生もあっという間ですよね？
だから今を楽しもうと思います.
