INSTALLING HANDRAILS ON SLEEPER STEPS (枕木の階段に手すりを設置)

 

Shrub roses have been growing on both sides of the sleeper steps in the centre of the main garden, but for safety reasons we have decided to add a handrail. Therefore, we decided to transplant the roses on the side where the handrail will be installed and replace them with a low evergreen hedge, which we have just done.

As a finishing touch, we have now installed the handrails using single pipes. A hole was drilled using a special hole digger, a 1.5 metre length of pipe was driven in, and a 2 metre length of pipe was fixed using a connecting device to complete the handrail. Areas that were difficult to paint were painted in advance, while areas that could be painted later were painted after assembly.

This is also part of the transformation to a sustainable garden for us.

メインガーデンの中央にある枕木の階段の両側にシュラブローズを育ててきましたが、安全性を考えて手すりをつけることにしました。そのため、手すりをつける側のバラは移植して、低い常緑性の生垣に変えることにして、先日その作業をしたところです。

今回は仕上げとして、単管パイプを使って手すりを設置しました。専用の穴掘り器を使って穴を開け、1.5メートルのパイプを打ち込み、連結器具を使って長さ2メートルのパイプを固定し、手すりの完成です。ペンキの塗りにくい所にはあらかじめ塗っておき、後で塗れるところは組み立ててから塗りました。

これも持続可能な庭への転換の一環です。

REPLANTING PLANTS ON THE SLEEPER STEPS (枕木の階段の植物の植え替え)

 

Shrub roses have been growing on both sides of the sleeper steps in the centre of the garden from the outset. We decided to add a handrail on one side to make it safer to go up and down the steps, so we dug up and transplanted the thorny roses and planted a variegated abelia there to make a low hedge. 

The thorns from the extended rose branches would sometimes get in the way when harvesting blueberries in mid-summer, but this would also eliminate that problem. 

This is another part of creating a sustainable garden for us.

庭の中央にある枕木の階段の両側には当初からバラを育ててきました。階段の上り下りを安全にするために、片側に手すりをつけることにしたので、トゲのあるバラは掘り上げて移植し、そこに斑入りのアベリアを植えて低い生垣にすることにしました。

真夏のブルーベリーの収穫時に、伸びたバラの枝の棘が邪魔になることがありましたが、その問題も解消できます。

私たちにとって持続可能な庭づくりのこれも一環です。

SHRUB ROSES PRUNED AND PREPARED FOR AUTUMN FLOWERING (剪定されて秋の開花へ向かうシュラブローズたち)

 

The shrub roses were pruned a couple of weeks ago and the new shoots and young leaves are starting to spread. 

The autumn roses will be in bloom by the beginning of October. Every year there are pests that eat the young leaves and buds of the roses, and they tend to spoil the autumn roses, so we will have to be even more careful than usual to make sure that the roses bloom beautifully. 

シュラブローズの剪定を2週間ほど前に行い、新芽が出て若葉が拡がり始めています. 

たぶん、十月の始めには秋バラが咲いてくれると思います. バラの若葉や蕾を食べる害虫が毎年来て、せっかくの秋バラを台無しにしがちなので、いつもにも増して害虫に注意してきれいな花を咲かせたいと思います.

ROSES AT THE SLEEPER STEPS (枕木階段のバラたち)

 

After the roses bloomed all together in May, and after pruning, they are blooming again, little by little.

At the sleeper steps, Angela and Pierres de Ronsard on the arches, and on either side of the staircase, Mary rose, Scarborough Fair and Leonardo da Vinci have a few small flowers.

五月にバラが一斉に咲いて、剪定をしたあとに、また少しずつバラが咲いています。

枕木の階段の所では、アーチの上のアンジェラやピエールドゥロンサール、そして階段の両側にはメアリーローズやスキャボロフェア、レオナルドダヴィンチなどが少し小さな花を咲かせています。

PARSNIP IN THE POTAGER (ポタジェのパースニップ)

It was sunny and milder today.

We harvested parsnips in the potager. 

We sowed many seeds last April in the pentagonal bed, 

and only a few germinated.  

Nine months is a long time, but it tasted good in a potage soup this evening.  

今日は晴れて穏やかな天気、

ポタジェでパースニップの収穫です. 

去年の四月に五角形の区画に種をたくさんまきましたが

発芽したのはわずか数個でした.

それから九ヶ月は長かったけど、夕食のポタージュスープでとっても美味しかった！

Two good-sizes parsnips 

Broccoli and brussel sprouts are still producing, and we sometimes pick them.  

ブロッコリとメキャベツはまだ生産していて、ときどき収穫しています.

Nasturtium was damaged by the severe cold last weekend.  

ナスタチウムは先週末のひどい寒さでやられました.

Today's job was repairing steps between blueberry and lemon. 

Three sleepers were restored and others were replaced with Italian stones.

今日の仕事はブルーベリーとレモンの間の階段修復です.
枕木３本は修復しましたが、他は「ローマの石」と取り替えました。

RESTORATION OF SLEEPER STEPS (枕木の階段の修復)

I have almost finished restoration of fourteen sleeper steps today.
This steps was made by Marple in 2009.
It took total of four days for restoration.


14段の枕木の階段の修復を今日ほぼ終えました.
この階段は2009年に家内がつくりました.
修復にはのべ4日間かかりました.

Most sleepers had more or less rotted. 

Sleepers, which couldn't be restored, were discarded,

and replaced with sleepers bought at the end of the last year.  

枕木の多くが多かれ少なかれ朽ちていました.

修復できないものは廃棄し

昨年末に買った枕木と交換しました.

I restored the rest of the sleepers in the way just shown below.  

他の枕木は以下のような方法で修復しました.

Ｔｈｉｓ one had a deep and large cavity on one side, which connected three holes of spikes
 (fixing rails on a sleeper) .
この枕木は片方に深くて大きな空洞ができていて、
犬釘（レールを固）の穴と交通していました

I covered the holes with plastic film,
which enabled to seal the hole in order not to leak cement.
ビニールシートで穴をカバーして穴をふさぎ、 セメントがもれないようにしました

Then I fill the cavity with instant dry mix cement.
Some styrene foam was used to lighten the weight.
空洞にインスタントセメントの粉を入れます
軽量化のために発泡スチロールも入れています

Water was added.
水を注ぎます

The cement hardened.
セメントがかたまりました

Side face of every sleeper was covered with weed control sheet (DuPont Xavan).
It prevents contact of sleeper and soil, which is the main factor of rotting, I think.
すべての枕木の側面は防草シートで覆いました
防草シートは枕木が土と直接接触しないためで、
私はこれが木の腐食の主な要因と思っているからです

I put down one inch of coloured dry concrete, which stabilize sleeper and prevent contact to soil.
色をつけてある「固まる土」を2.5センチほどの厚みで敷き、
枕木を安定させ土との直接接触を防ぎます

and water was sprayed.
固まる土を枕木の周りにも入れて水を噴霧します

Ａfter restoration, soilless compost was put between the sleepers,
where we will plant something like native procumbent wild flowers or sedum.
修復の後は、培養土を枕木の間にいれて
野生の匍匐性の草花かセダムか植えようと思っています

I expect the sleepers will last long (at least ten years!). 

これで枕木が長持ちすることを期待しています

（少なくとも10年以上！）
