今日の動画：梅雨明けの庭巡り
The end of the rainy season has been officially declared, and the maximum temperature here during the day rose to 36.3°C, the highest in Japan. Roses are blooming here and there in the garden. Blue flowers are in bloom in the blue border, and several one-day-bloom passion flowers are flowering on the wall of the garden room. In the potager, small watermelons, cherry tomatoes, edamame and asparagus are growing. Looking up at the sky, I saw a dragonfly flying by. Higher up, a kite was also soaring. The hot summer is set to continue. Watering will become a daily routine.
梅雨明け宣言があり、日中は当地で最高気温が36.3℃まで上がり、日本で一番高い気温でした。庭では所々でバラが咲いています。青のボーダー花壇では青い花たちが咲いていて、ガーデンルームの壁では一日花のトケイソウもいくつも咲いています。ポタジェでは小玉スイカやミニトマト、枝豆、アスパラガスなどが育っています。空を見上げるとトンボが飛んでいました。さらに上空ではトビも飛んでいました。これから暑い夏が続きます。水やりが日課となります。

THE FIRST SMALL WATERMELON OF THE SEASON (小玉スイカの初物)
A variety of flowers and vegetables are growing in the potager. We are continuing to harvest asparagus, albeit in small quantities. Although the leaves of the cherry tomatoes have been quite badly eaten by pests, there are plenty of tomatoes on the plants, and we are continuing to harvest them little by little. The edamame beans, which we sowed in early June, have grown quite a long way.
As for the small watermelons, whose seedlings we planted in late April, the fruit from the first female flowers pollinated at the end of May has gradually grown larger and is now ready for harvest. When we weighed one, it came to nearly 2 kilograms. After chilling it in the fridge and cutting it open, we found it had turned a beautiful red colour and tasted sweet, just like a watermelon should. It looks as though we’ll be able to harvest a few more. Let’s hope the pests stay away.
ポタジェでは花や野菜がいろいろ育っています。アスパラガスは少しずつですが収穫が続いています。ミニトマトは害虫にかなり葉を食べられましたが、実はたくさんついていて、少しずつ収穫を続けています。六月初めに種をまいた枝豆はだいぶん茎が伸びてきました。
4月の下旬に苗を植え付けた小玉スイカ、5月末に最初に受粉した雌花の実がだんだん大きくなって、収穫の時期を迎えました。重さを測ってみると2キロちかっくありました。冷蔵庫に冷やして割ってみるときれいに赤く色づいて、甘いスイカの味でした。あと何個かはこれから収穫できそうです。害獣が来ないことを祈ります。

THE POTAGER GARDEN IN LATE MAY (五月下旬のポタジェガーデン)
At the entrance to the potager garden, the new shoots of the golden holly are a beautiful golden colour. The foxgloves are still blooming beautifully, their flower spikes stretching upwards. We have finished harvesting the cabbages from the pentagonal raised bed, and the potatoes will soon be ready for harvesting. The California poppies continue to bloom with their vibrant yellow flowers. The asparagus has grown tall and leafy, and the harvest is now largely complete. The chamomile has finished flowering; we have cut it down, dried it, and are using it as mulch for the mini watermelons. The flax is bearing plenty of seed. We will soon be entering the rainy season, followed by the intense heat of midsummer.
ポタジェガーデンの入り口ではオウゴンヒイラギの新芽が美しい黄金色です。ジギタリスは花穂を伸ばしてまだ美しく咲いています。五角形のレイズドベッドのキャベツの収穫が終わり、ジャガイモがもうすぐ収穫の時期を迎えます。カリフォルニアポピー（ハナビシソウ）が鮮やかな黄色い花を咲かせ続けています。アスパラガスは大きく枝葉を伸ばし、収穫も一段落です。カモミールの花も終わって、刈り取って干して小玉スイカの敷き藁にしています。亜麻はたくさんの実をつけています。まもなく梅雨の時期にはいり、そのあと猛暑の真夏に突入です。

ASPARAGUS IS SPROUTING (アスパラガスが出てきました)
The asparagus has started to sprout in the potager garden. It is purple asparagus grown in a pentagonal raised bed. It looks as though we’ll be able to harvest it for a while to come.
ポタジェガーデンではアスパラガスが出始めました。五角形のレイズドベッドに育てている紫色のアスパラガスです。これからしばらく収穫できそうです。

PLANTING CABBAGE SEEDLINGS IN LATE DECEMBER (年末のキャベツ苗の植え付け)
In the potager, the asparagus has withered, marking the end of this season. I pruned them back to ground level. The North Pole and chamomile that bloomed this spring have grown, and the North Pole is beginning to flower a little. The mini tomatoes, planted twice this spring and summer, failed to ripen due to the cold and are now finished. I pulled them up and disposed of them in the compost bin.
Following the mini tomatoes, cabbage seedlings have been planted. Insect netting has been placed over them to protect the leaves from pests. They are scheduled for harvest next spring.
ポタジェではアスパラガスが枯れてきて、今シーズンも終了です。地際で剪定しました。今年の春に咲いたノースポールやカモミールが育ち、ノースポールは少し花が咲き始めています。春と夏に二度植え付けて育てたミニトマトも寒さで実が熟せず、もう終わりです。引き抜いてコンポスト容器に処分しました。
ミニトマトの後にはキャベツの苗を植え付けました。防虫ネットをかぶせて虫から葉を守ります。来春の収穫予定です。

POTAGER GARDEN IN LATE SEPTEMBER (九月下旬のポタジェガーデン)
Late September has finally brought the end of summer into view. This year too, a record-breaking hot summer persisted for three months from late June, leaving both the garden plants and us humans thoroughly exhausted. In the potager garden, hints of autumn are beginning to show. The harvest of the small “Alps Maiden” apples is already complete, and the Fuji apples will be ready soon. Potato shoots are emerging, tomato flowers are beginning to bloom, and the asparagus is sprouting new shoots once more. The perilla or shiso is flowering in white and pink.
九月下旬になりやっと夏の終わりが見えてきました。今年も記録的な暑い夏が６月末から３か月の間続いてきて、庭の植物たちも人間もさすがにばてています。ポタジェガーデンでは秋の気配も少し見えています。小さなリンゴのアルプス乙女の収穫はすでに終えて、フジの収穫がそろそろです。ジャガイモの芽がでてきて、トマトの花が咲き始め、再びアスパラが新芽を出してきています。シソは白とピンクの花が咲いています。
