Petit English Garden of MARPLE & POIROT

My wife and I started gardening in Fukuoka (Japan) in 2003. There was nothing but muddy clayey sloping land. At the beginning we made several structure such as steps and paths, and planted turf, fruit trees, roses, herbs etc. In 2010, we visited several famous English gardens, including Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Mottisfont Abbey Garden and Hidcote Manor Garden. We were shocked by the glory of those gardens. Since then, we have been trying to make small but glorious gardens by ourselves.

庭の紹介

　夫婦で庭づくりを福岡の郊外で2003年に始めました.　赤土むきだしの斜面にまず階段や園路をつくって芝をはり、果樹やバラ、ハーブなどを植えました.

　2010年にイギリスの有名なガーデンの、シシングハースト、モティスフォントアビー、ヒドコートマナーなどを回り、その素晴らしさに圧倒され、それから自分たちで小さくても素晴らしい庭をめざして庭づくりをつづけています.

THE POTAGER GARDEN, THE HEAT WAVE CONTINUES (猛暑の続くポタジェガーデン)

The rainy season ended in late June and it has been hot ever since. It has rained twice, but the garden is dry. In the potager garden, the plants are still doing their best. The sunflowers love the hot summer and are a variety called Sanfinity, which has many small flowers that bloom continuously. The flax has finished flowering and is bearing seeds. The green soybean seedlings are getting much bigger. Two varieties of perilla are planted, one green and one red. Asparagus still shoots out from time to time. The dwarf tomato, Mamma Mia, is finished and I pulled the plant out after picking the red berries.

六月下旬に梅雨が明けて、それからずっと暑い日が続いています。雨は二度ほど降りましたが、庭は乾いています。ポタジェガーデンではそれでも植物たちが頑張っています。ヒマワリは暑い夏が好きな花で、小さな花がたくさん咲き続けるサンフィニティーという品種です。亜麻は花が終わって実をつけています。枝豆の苗がだいぶん大きくなってきました。シソは緑と赤の2種類を植えています。アスパラガスは今も時々シュートを出してきます。矮性トマトのマンマミーアはもう終わりで、赤くなった実を採ってから株を引き抜きました。

SUNFLOWER IN FULL BLOOM (ヒマワリが満開)

Sunflowers are planted along the road near my house and are now in full bloom. All the flowers face east, which is spectacular. The flowers look good against the bright blue summer sky.

家の近くの道路沿いにひまわりが植えてあり、いま満開になっています。すべての花が東の方向を向いていて壮観です。真っ青な夏空に似合う花です。

POTAGER GARDEN IN SUMMER (夏のポタジェガーデン)

The rainy season has ended about three weeks earlier than usual and the weather has been midsummer. Many sunflowers are blooming in the potager under the midsummer sun. Many mini tomatoes are also ripening. The Delaware grapes, which we have trained to the fence, are bearing many bunches of small berries. We hope they will grow and ripen safely.

梅雨が例年より3週間ぐらい早く明けて、真夏の天気が続いています。ポタジェではひまわりの花が真夏の太陽をうけてたくさん咲いています。ミニトマトもたくさん熟しています。フェンスに誘引したブドウのデラウェアが何房もの小さな実をつけています。無事に大きくなって熟してくれることを願っています。

POTAGER IN MID-SEPTEMBER (九月中旬のポタジェ)

In September, mornings and evenings are sometimes a few degrees cooler than in mid-summer, but daytime highs are still around 35°C, almost the same as in mid-summer. Some plants did not survive the hot summer and have died, but the peppers in the potager are now brightly coloured and beautiful. Asparagus branches have been killed or broken by pests and typhoon-force winds, and there are fewer branches and leaves, but many new shoots are growing. I will use some of them for food and let the rest grow more branches and leaves to store nutrients.

九月に入って朝晩が２，３度温度が真夏より低い日もありますが、日中の最高気温は相変わらず35℃前後と真夏とほとんど変わりません。植物によっては暑い夏を乗り切れずに枯れてしまったものもありますが、ポタジェでは今、唐辛子が鮮やかに色づいて綺麗です。アスパラガスは害虫や台風の強風などで枝が枯れたり折れたりして、枝葉が少なくなっていますが、新芽がたくさん伸びてきています。一部は食用にして、あとは枝葉を増やして栄養を蓄えさせようと思います。

TALL SUNFLOWER IN THE POTAGER (ノッポのひまわり)

A boy who lives next door gave me some sunflower seeds. So I sowed the seeds in a raised bed where I planted ginger. I chose one of the several seedlings that sprouted and let it grow. It grew so fast that when the height of the raised bed was added, it was nearly three metres tall and flowering. It is big, beautifully coloured, magnificent sunflower.

Sunflowers bloom facing east, so the sun shines behind it in the afternoon. Backlit from the front, the flowers look even more vibrant through the petals.

隣に住んでいる男の子からヒマワリの種をもらいました。そこでショウガを植えているレイズドベッドに種を蒔いてみました。何個か芽吹いた苗の中から一つを選んで大きくしていきました。そしてぐんぐん大きくなり、レイズドベッドの高さも加えると3メートル近くになって花をつけました。大きくて美しい色の立派なヒマワリです。

ヒマワリは東を向いて咲くので、午後は後ろから日が照ります。正面から逆光で見る花は花びらを透かしてさらに鮮やかに見えます。

POTAGER AT THE END OF JUNE (六月末のポタジェ)

Potager has changed a lot between May and June. The flax and cornflowers are finished with their seeds, which I collected. After them are potted small sunflowers that continue to flower throughout the summer. This sunflower is registered under the name 'SunBelievable'.

After the potatoes, we planted Kochia (summer cypress) seedlings. They turn bright red in autumn.

After cabbage, we grow edamame (green soybean). After the onions are dwarf mini-tomatoes. Both are growing well and I am looking forward to harvesting them as they start to bear fruit.

The asparagus is growing large branches and leaves.

The last pentagonal raised bed is planted with ginger. This is the first time they are being grown, so we are praying that they will grow well.

ポタジェは五月から六月にかけてだいぶん変わっています。亜麻やヤグルマギクは種を採って終わっています。そのあとには夏中花を咲かせ続ける小輪のヒマワリを鉢植えで育てています。「サンビリーバブル」という名前で登録されているヒマワリです。

ジャガイモの後にはコキアの苗を植えました。秋には真っ赤な色に染まります。

キャベツの後には枝豆を育てています。タマネギのあとは矮性のミニトマトです。どちらもよく育ってきて、これから実が付きだして収穫が楽しみです。

アスパラは枝葉を大きく茂らせています。

最後の五角形のレイズドベッドにはショウガを植えています。初めて育てるので、これからうまく育ってくれるように祈っています。
