NEW ROSES WE CREATED (自作の新しいバラ)

Two seedlings of rose,
which were grown from rosehips of Rosa 'Gertrude Jekyll' last year, 

bear flowers for the first time now. 

One flower is double and light pink with a sweet smell, 

and the other is single and very light pink.  

Both have yellow stamens. 

昨年、ガートルード・ジェキルのローズヒップから育てた二つの苗木が

今、花をはじめて咲かせています.

一つは八重咲きで薄いピンク色、甘い香があります.

もう一つは一重のごく薄いピンクです.

どちらも黄色いしべを持っています. 

The seedlings grown from rosehips of Rosa 'Constance Spry' are growing, 

and they will soon bear  flowers.  

I'm looking forward to seeing the flowers. 

コンスタンススプライのローズヒップから育った苗は成長していて

まもなく花が咲くでしょう.

その花を見るのが楽しみです.

ROSE SEEDLINGS (バラの実生)

Last November, I harvested rose hips of Rosa 'Constance Spry' and 'Gertrude Jekyll' at the brick wall of our main garden, and took out seeds.  I measured the specific gravity of them throwing in water, and most of the seeds went to the bottom.  I sowed them in seed-starting containers on 3 November 2014.


（昨年の11月にレンガ塀のところのコンスタンス・スプライとガートルード・ジェキルのローズヒップを取ってきて、種を取り出しました。比重をはかるために水に入れると、ほとんどは水に沈みました。種を種まきポットにまいたのが昨年の11月3日でした。）

Rose hips of 'Constance Spry' contained only a few seeds, and more seeds in 'Gertrude Jekyll' 

Most of seeds in water had sunk to the bottom.

Seeds ware planted in small pots.   

Some of seeds have germinated last month, and now the first true leaves appeared after the seed leaves (cotyledons).  It is said that they will bloom by the time the new rose seedlings are 6 to 8 inches tall.  Exceptions will be roses that had climbing roses as parents, as these may need to get a foot or more tall before they will bloom the first time.  Because parents of our seedlings are climbing roses, I must be patient for a bit long time to look at their flowers.


（先月、種のいくつかは発芽して、双葉のあと本葉も見えてきています。実生の苗が６から８インチぐらいに育ったら花をつけるといわれています。例外は親がツルバラの場合で、30cm以上に発育しないと花が咲かないようです。うちの苗の親はツルバラなので、花をみるまでは少し辛抱強く待つ必要がありそうです。）

BACK HOME FROM UK

We visited Britain from last week, and came back home this afternoon.
We lost no time in getting to work in our garden; collecting fallen leaves, exterminating insect pests, and harvesting fruits and vegetables.

Though there was no rainfall during our absence, every plants in flowerpots and containers were OK thanks to our neighbours

Ducks welcomed us with full bloom of Tsuwabuki (Farfugium japonicum)

We harvested persimmons, tomatoes, sweet peppers and rose hips with Rosa 'Scarborough Fair'

AUTUMN WILD FRUITS

Strong wind of a typhoon #18 had made many acorns fall to the ground, even as a branch.

A red fruit of Trichosanthes cucumeroides was found at a roadside.  Its white flower with fine lace was written in the old post in July.  

A cultivar variety of Akebia trifoliata bears pure purple fruits in this season.  It spontaneously opens and sausage-shaped sweet jelly material containing seeds appears.  Skin is edible by frying.  

These are red rose hips of wild 'Rosa multiflora' in the kitchen garden.   

Miscanthus sinensis, a native grass in Japan, ,has red-brown flower at the beginning and it become white due to seeds with white hairs.  Almost all leaves of cherry 'Somei-Yoshino' has already fallen.

Growing fruits

We have several kinds of fruit trees in the garden.  The fruits including crab apple, grape, blueberry, fig, persimmon, pomegranate and 'rose hip'.

This grape vine 'Kyoho' is very popular in Japan.  The size of fruit is large and it tastes very sweet.

We have six rabit-eye blueberry trees.  Last year we harvested 16 kilogrammes from July to September.  My wife MARPLE made a lot of jam, and a tart.  We are looking forward to harvesting.

I found a ladybird on the rose hip.
