Akebi is a deciduous vine that grows wild in fields and mountains.
In our garden, we have installed welded wire mesh along the side wall of the side garden to train the vines. We grow two varieties: wild akebi and the cultivated “Murasaki-suisyou（Amethyst）” variety.
Typically, the fruit ripens and becomes edible from late September to early October. However, perhaps due to global warming, the timing has gradually been tending to be later, and this year they only began to colour in November.
The wild species is a purple with a strong reddish hue, resembling the colour of sweet potatoes. The cultivated variety, Amethyst, is a beautiful purple. The fruit naturally splits lengthwise, revealing its contents. The jelly-like part inside, containing seeds, is sweet and makes a good snack, while the flesh (skin) can be eaten after roasting to remove its bitterness.
アケビは落葉性のつる植物で野山に自生しています。
私たちの庭では、横庭の壁際に溶接金網を設置してツルを誘引しています。育てているのはミツバアケビで、野生種と園芸種（紫水晶）の2種類です。
例年、9月下旬から10月上旬にその実は色づいて食べられるようになります。しかし温暖化の影響か、少しずつ時期が遅くなる傾向があり、今年は11月に入ってやっと色づき始めました。
野生種は赤みの強い紫色で、サツマイモの色に似ています。園芸種の紫水晶は美しい紫色です。実は自然に縦に割れて、中身が見えるようになります。中の種を含んだゼリー状の部分が甘くておやつになり、果肉（皮）は焼くと苦みがとれて食用になります。
