It looks as though the Japanese boxwood hedge in front of the brick wall is covered in a profusion of pink and white flowers. In fact, these are the numerous new shoots of the Hatuyukikazura, Asiatic jasmine. They add a splash of vibrant colour to the otherwise monotonous green.

Japanese jasmine 'Hatsuyuki-kazura' is a climbing plant with pink new shoots. It sprouts from within the Japanese boxwood hedge in the main garden, making it look as though pink flowers are blooming on the Japanese boxwood itself. As it grows denser over the top of the hedge, the parts of the boxwood in the shade begin to wither, so I take care to prune back the foliage once it becomes too dense to prevent the boxwood from dying. As the boxwood has grown since spring, I am pruning the newly grown branches. I am cutting them one by one with secateurs, so it is taking a little time. I intend to continue pruning little by little and hope to finish by the end of this month.
ハツユキカズラは新芽がピンク色のつる性植物です。メインガーデンのマメツゲの生垣の中から新芽を出して、あたかもマメツゲにピンクの花が咲いているように見えます。生け垣の上で茂ってくると日陰になったマメツゲの部分が枯れてくるので、茂ってきたら枝葉を減らしてツゲが枯れないように気を付けています。マメツゲは春から新芽を伸ばして大きくなってきたので、新たに伸びた分の枝を剪定しています。一本ずつ剪定ばさみで切っているのでちょっと時間がかかります。少しずつ剪定を続けて、今月中には終わろうと思っています。
We plant coleus seedlings every spring in two large pots in front of the brick wall. In the summer they grow into a profusion of foliage, and add to the beauty of the garden with their foliage. This year we chose a series of horticultural varieties of coleus called Flame Thrower. I planted two of these varieties, “Adobo Pink” and “Chilli Pepper”. Both are starting to produce small, pretty flowers, but it is the bright colours and shapes of the foliage that is the main thing to admire. Another plant that catches the eye because of its beautiful foliage is the Asian jasmine 'Hatuyukikazura'. Young pink leaves, which from a distance look as if they are in flower, are spreading over the Japanese boxwood hedgerow.
レンガ塀の前の二つの大きな鉢に毎年春にコリウスの苗を植えます。夏には葉がたくさん茂って、その葉の美しさが庭を引き立てます。今年選んだのはコリウスのフレイムスローワーという園芸品種のシリーズです。その中の「アドボピンク」と「チリペッパー」という二つの品種を植えました。どちらも小さな可愛い花をつけ始めていますが、鑑賞の対象はあくまで葉の鮮やかな色や形です。そしてもう一つ葉の美しさで目を引くのがハツユキカズラです。遠くからは花が咲いているように見えるピンクの若葉がマメツゲの生垣の上に広がっています。

Every day is terribly hot and we spend less and less time in the garden. In the garden, plants with bright foliage colours add colour to a garden with few flowers.
Coleus is an annual herb that loves the sun and heat and is characterised by its bright foliage colours. It produces small, blue, inconspicuous flowers. In our garden it is planted in two large pots as a summer focal point.
The Japanese jasmine is a vine with young leaves that are bright pink, gradually becoming lighter pink in colour and finally turning green. The pink leaves growing out of the Japanese boxwood hedge look as if they have flowered.
毎日ひどく暑い日が続いて、庭で過ごす時間は少なくなっています。庭では鮮やかな葉色の植物が花の少ない庭に彩を添えています。
コリウスは一年草で、日差しや暑さが大好きで、その葉色の鮮やかさが特徴です。小さくて青い目立たない花をつけます。私たちの庭では大きな鉢2つに植えて夏のフォーカルポイントにしています。

The new leaves of the Japanese jasmine have a dark pink colour, which gradually changes to a pale pink and then to a normal green colour. This makes it look like a pink flower from a distance. I like it because it is a very pretty colour and contrasts beautifully with the green.
ハツユキカズラは新しい葉が濃いピンク色を呈し、次第に淡いピンクを経て、普通の緑色へと変化していきます。そのため、遠くから見るとピンクの花が咲いているように見えるのです。とても綺麗な色で、緑色との対比も美しく、気に入っています。
There are some beautiful plants with bright foliage in the garden at the moment.
The first is the Japanese jasmine, which is a vine. The leaves on the newly growing branches are a beautiful pink. From a distance it looks like a flower has bloomed. The vine is spreading in a raised bed for peonies, and next to it, on top of a summer-pruned boxwood, it looks as if the boxwood is in flower.
The other is Coleus. It is a cold-sensitive annual. It is a typical summer garden plant with its bright red and yellow leaves. It actually flowers, but the small blue flowers are less conspicuous because of the prominent foliage colour. It is winterised by taking cuttings in autumn.

最初はハツユキカズラで、つる性の植物です. 新しく伸びた枝の葉が美しいピンク色をしています. 遠くから見ると、まるで花が咲いたようです. ピオニー用のレイズドベッドで広がっていて、その横にある夏に剪定したマメツゲの上にも、ツルが伸びてあたかもマメツゲに花が咲いているように見えます.
もう一つはコリウスです. 寒さに弱い一年草です. その葉が鮮やかな赤や黄色など夏の庭の代表的な植物です. 実は花が咲くのですが、青くて小さい花なので目立つ葉色のためにあまり目立ちません. 秋に挿し穂にして冬越しをしています.
The pink semi-double peonies are in full bloom. The pink gradient of the petals and the large bright yellow stamens are very beautiful and pretty.
Next to them are pink pansies that have been in bloom all winter. And next to them is a pink spotted Hatsuyuki-kazura. It's a pink competition. And across the pathway, the pink and white flowers of the Erigeron are in full bloom.
ピンクの半八重のシャクヤクが満開になってきました. ピンクのグラデーションの花びらに、真っ黄色の大きなしべがとても美しくて、可愛い花です.
その横は、冬の間から咲いてきたピンクのパンジー. そしてさらにその横はピンク色の斑入りのハツユキカズラです. ピンク色の競演です. そして園路をはさんでエリゲロンのピンクと白の花が満開です.
