FLUFFY COTTON BOLLS (ふわふわの綿花)

We planted cotton seeds in spring.
They bore many creamy white flowers in summer.
They turned pink and bore cotton bolls. 

Now, most of grown hard cotton bolls have cracked open and look like a fluffy ball. 

It's time of picking.

春に綿花の種をまき、
夏にはクリームがかった白い花を咲かせ、
花色はピンクになってコットンボールを付けます.
そして今、大きく育ったコットンボールのほとんどが割れてふわふわの綿球になり、
収穫の時です.

THE TYPHOON HAS GONE (台風のあと)

The huge typhoon has gone this morning.
We looked down the main garden from the window.
My wife said that she felt something unusual in the garden.
Looking closely,
 we found that a standard trumpet vine had fallen in the central bed.
We walked down to the garden,
and found that white lantana had also fallen.

大型の台風は今朝は行ってしまいました.
窓から庭を見下ろと、
家内が何か変だといいます.
よく見ると、スタンダード仕立てのノウゼンカズラが中央花壇で倒れています.
庭に下りると、
白いランタナも倒れていました.

ノウゼンカズラ（右）と白のランタナ（左）が倒れていました.

The wooden stake that supported the trumpet vine has broken at the level of ground, however the vine looked safe without substantial damages.
So, I cut its branches and supported it with a couple of iron bars.

ノウゼンカズラを支えていた木製の支柱が地面の高さで折れていますが、
ノウゼンカズラ自体には大きなダメージはないようです.
枝を切って鉄筋2本で支えました.

Some branches of the white lantana have broken, however,
most of them were intact.
So, I supported them with iron bars, too.

ランタナの枝も折れているところがありましたが、
ほとんどは大丈夫でした.
これも鉄筋を使って支えました.

Jerusalem artichoke was generally OK, however,
cotton has fallen.

エルサレムアーティチョークは概ね大丈夫でしたが、
綿花が倒れています.

Seventeenth typhoon in 2019 passed by our area
last evening.

PREPARING FOR THE COMING TYPHOON (接近中の台風への準備)

The17th typhoon of this year 'Tapah' is coming from the south.
We prepared for the huge typhoon.
Jerusalem artichoke has started to flower at the height of more than 10 feet.
The flowers look like sunflower, and Jerusalem artichoke is also called sunchoke. 

We bound its stems to bamboo canes to prevent them
from breaking off by a gale of typhoon.

17号台風が南から接近しています.
この大型台風の対策をしました.
キクイモ（エルサレムアーティチョーク）が3メートル以上の高さで咲き始めています.
その花はヒマワリ（サンフラワー）にも似ていて、サンチョークとも呼ばれます.
その茎を竹竿に縛って、台風の強風で折れないようにしました.

At the fishing port in our neighbourhood,
fishing boats were evaculated from the sea to the ground by a crane.

近くの漁港では漁船を海から陸上へクレーンを使って避難していました.

COTTON FLOWERS (綿の花)

There was no damage to cotton plants beside Jerusalem artichoke by the last typhoon, and there are many flowers in bloom now.
Petals of cotton flowers are white when they open, and they become pink and do not open on the next day, and they fall on the third or forth day.
Life of cotton flowers are so short.
In 40 to 60 days, they become cotton bolls. 

この前の台風ではキクイモの横の綿は被害も無く、

今は花はたくさん花が咲いています.

花びらは最初は白ですが、翌日にはピンクになって開かず、

3、４日目には落ちてしまいます.

綿の花は短命です.

40日から60日ほどで綿の玉ができます.

SUNCHOKE AND COTTON (菊芋と綿花)

We grow Jerusalem artichoke and cotton
on the other side of the louver lattice of the blue boder as posted last month.
They've grown much higher,
and cotton bears many flower buds.
We wear cooling fan jackets when we garden
because it is boiling hot in day time. 

Japanese Met Agency is warning that the large and strong typhoon Krosa is coming to western Japan sometime around 15th Aug.
Jerusalem artichoke fell by the strong wind of typhoon last year,
and we are worrying about it.
We bound tops of artichoke to prevent it this morning.
Beside cotton, red Lycoris radiata has begun to bloom.
It is two weeks earlier than last year.

ブルーのボーダー花壇のルーバーラティスの向こう側で
キクイモとコットンを育てているのは先月すでに載せましたが、
さらに高く伸びていて、
コットンは花の蕾がついています.
日中はうだるような暑さで、空調服を庭仕事では着ています.
気象庁は大型で強い台風10号が15日ごろに西日本に来ると警戒を呼びかけています.
昨年は強い台風の風でキクイモは倒れましたが、それが心配です.
倒れないように茎の先のほうを束ねました.
コットンの横ではすでに赤いヒガンバナが咲き始めています.
去年より2週間も早く

JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE AND COTTON PLANT (キクイモとワタ)

We grow Jerusalem artichoke and cotton
on the other side of the louver lattice of the boder.
They are growing quite well. 

Jerusalem artichoke is 7 feet high, and cotton is 4 feet high.
The former flowers in October and the latter in August.

ボーダー花壇のルーバーラティスの反対側でキクイモとワタを育てています.
そしてとても順調に育っています.
キクイモは2メートルを超え、ワタも120センチほどになっています.
キクイモは10月、ワタは8月に花が咲きます.



Beside artichoke, Salvia guaranitica bears blue flowers
with black calyces on the black stems.
It looks stunning!

菊芋の隣ではサルビア・ガラニチカが
黒い花茎に黒いガクをもつ青い花をつけています.
とても綺麗です！
