My wife and I started gardening in Fukuoka (Japan) in 2003. There was nothing but muddy clayey sloping land. At the beginning we made several structure such as steps and paths, and planted turf, fruit trees, roses, herbs etc. In 2010, we visited several famous English gardens, including Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Mottisfont Abbey Garden and Hidcote Manor Garden. We were shocked by the glory of those gardens. Since then, we have been trying to make small but glorious gardens by ourselves.

It was foggy this morning and we couldn't see Mt. Kaya
from the top of the new garden.

In the afternoon, fog had gone and the sky became hazy again with kosa
(fine yellow sand dust which came flying from Gobi Desert in Mongolia).

BEAUTIFUL HOLIDAY (素晴らしい休日)
Today is a national holiday.
We spent most of day time in our garden.
Plum is in full bloom and the sky and the sea was beautifully blue.

REFORMING THE RAISED BEDS
Autumn flowers are almost over,
and I decided to reform the two pentagonal raised bed,
in which I planted asparagus.
Some of the asparagus plants died probably because of root rot this spring.
I happened to watch the DVD of Geoff Hamilton's 'The Ornamental Kitchen Garden',
and he showed his asparagus bed.
He said that asparagus likes a lot of free drainage.
The bed looked two feet high, and I thought I should make our bed much higher.
I made two beds where I planted asparagus about 8 inches higher by adding boards.
Boards were coated with antiseptic paint, and were painted blue gray by Marple.
In order to make the boards last long,
I lined the wooden edges with nonwoven weed-preventing sheet.
It took a whole weekend,
and when they have finished, night fell.
Day time of this season is so short.
At the end, I fit LED illumination lights on the gazebo.

GARDEN IN THE MOON LIGHT
It was a harvest moon last Sunday.
The moon was so beautiful in the eastern sky, and shined on the sea and our garden.

MAKING WINDOWSILL AT THE GAZEBO
Last weekend, I made a windowsill outside the gazebo windows in order to make a place for flower containers and seedling pots because the place is full of sunshine.
At first, I made two notches on a board for two containers, and then I fixed legs to the board. They were painted chocolate colour in advance. Finally I set the board just outside the gazebo windows.

Two plastic containers were set into holes.
I put six pots of rose seedlings on the windowsill. They are growing and I am looking forward to their first flowers.

AFTERNOON TEA IN THE GAZEBO
I was off duty yesterday afternoon. It was sunny and not so hot and the afternoon sun had set at 4 PM in our garden. I decided to have afternoon tea with my wife in the gazebo. There was neither scone nor sandwich, but I felt completely peaceful.

FIRST ROSE FLOWERS (薔薇開花一番乗り)
The first roses of this year is white double Rosa banksiae under the gazebo. It is a climbing rose growing vigorously up to 6 m tall. Unlike most roses, it is practically thornless. Only one plant have entirely covered the south side of gazebo and its base.
The second is climbing Rosa 'Summer Snow', which is trained on the south wall of the cottage.
And the third is standard Rosa 'Mary Rose' in the potager.
