FRUITS OF BUTIA YATAY PALM (ココスヤシの実）

 

The Butia yatay is a species of palm native to South America, which produces numerous fruits in late summer, each about 3 cm in diameter. The yellow ripe fruits give off a tropical sweet odour similar to banana or pineapple. They taste sweet and sour, similar to pineapple. The berries are high up and cannot be harvested directly, but when ripe they fall naturally, so you can pick up the ripe fruits under the tree. The sweet smell attracts bees, and badgers and wild boars come in the middle of the night for the fallen fruits. The smell lingers around for the next two weeks. 

ココスヤシは南米原産の椰子の一種で、夏の終わりに直径3センチほどの実が多数つきます. 黄色く熟した実はバナナやパイナップルに似たトロピカルな甘いにおいを放ちます. 味も甘酸っぱくて、パイナップルに似ています. 高いところに実はついているので、直接収穫は出来ませんが、熟すると自然に落下するので、木の下で熟した実を拾うことができます. 甘い香りに誘われて、蜂などが集まり、落ちた実を目当てにアナグマやイノシシも夜中にやってきているようです. これから2週間ほどは辺りににおいが漂い続けます.

RARE TROPICAL FRUIT (珍しい熱帯の果物)

Butia yatay is a palm native to southern America. 

The shape of the fruit is globular 

and the ripe fruit are yellow with very strong sweet smell.  

Its diameter is about 2.5 cm, and it weighs 10-15 gram.  

The flesh is yellow, sweet, juicy and slightly fibrous. 

Its smell and taste is similar to pineapple

ココスヤシは南米原産のヤシです.

果実の形は球形で、熟すと黄色くなって、強い芳香を持ちます.

直径はおよそ2.5センチで、重さは10から15グラムぐらいで、

黄色い果肉は甘くてジューシーですこし繊維質です.

香りや味はパイナップルみたいです.

There is a large Butia yatay tree in my neighbourhood, and it bears fruits now. 

A number of ripe fruits have fallen to the ground, so I collected them. 

Several years ago, I made its juice, however I ate them raw this time. 

うちの近所にココスヤシの木があり、今実がついています.

たくさんの熟した実が地面に落ちていたので拾いました.

何年か前はジュースをつくりましたが、

今回は生で食べました.

MAKING PALM FRUIT JUICE (ココスヤシのジュースづくり)

In my neighbourhood, I collected fruits of Butiayatay;
 a kind of  palm which is native to South America. 

This palm tree has grown up to 5 meters, and some of its fruits have fallen down
on the ground.  

The fruits gave off a strong sweet smell, and I noticed that the fruits had ripened.  

I got about 150 fruits, weighing 1,500 grammes.  

This was a first time in ten years.  

ご近所で南米原産のヤシの木の一種のココスヤシの実を拾いました。
このヤシの木は5メートルほどに成長していて、地面に落ち始めています。
その実は強い甘い香りを放ち、それで熟していることに気づきました。
150個ほど採って、重さは1.5キロほどです。
10年ぶりのことです。

I made its fresh juice by using cotton cloth.  

It was easy, however, it needed some grasping power of the hands.  

It gave 660 grammes of juice, and I froze a half of it, and the rest was stored in a fridge for drinking.  

Its smell and taste is similar to pineapple, and I like it.  

木綿の布を使ってそのジュースを作りました。

簡単な方法ですが、握力がちょっと要ります。

660グラムほど絞り、半分は凍らせ、半分はそのまま飲むために冷蔵庫へ。

そのにおいや味はパイナップルに似ていて、私は好きです。
