CAN THE FRUIT OF THE PASSION FLOWER BE EATEN? (トケイソウの実は食べられる？)

 

The passion flower is a climbing plant from the same family as the passion fruit, and their flowers are similar. The passion flower I’ve trained along the wall of my garden room occasionally bears egg-shaped fruits. Wondering if they might be edible, I cut open one that had turned yellow. トケイソウはパッションフルーツと同じ仲間のつる性植物で、両者の花も似ています。ガーデンルームの壁に誘引しているトケイソウにはときどき卵形の実が付きます。ひょっとして食べられるかと思って、黄色く色づいた実を割ってみました。結果は動画でご覧ください。

CLOCK-SHAPED PASSION FLOWER (時計の形のトケイソウの花)

 

We grow two types of climbing plants—potato vine and passion flower—as a green curtain on the large windows of our garden room. Both are perennials that shed their leaves in winter. They are virtually free from pests and diseases, and have beautiful foliage. 

Potato vine produce charming blue flowers that bloom continuously throughout the hot season, giving a refreshing appearance. 

Passion flowers produce flowers with a very unusual shape. They are single-day flowers that open in the morning and wilt by evening. The pistil is divided into three parts, resembling the hour, minute and second hands of a clock, whilst the petals are arranged in a circle to resemble a clock face; this is why they are known as ‘clock flowers’ in Japan. As they are single-day flowers, those that bloomed the previous day will not bloom again. The number of flowers varies from day to day; some days there are few, whilst on others there are many. Occasionally, the wilted flowers bear fruit, but this is not edible.

ガーデンルームの大きな窓には二種類のつる植物、ツルハナナスとトケイソウ、を緑のカーテンにして育てています。どちらも冬には葉を落とす多年草です。病害虫はほとんどなく、葉が美しい植物です。

ツルハナナスは可愛らしい青い花をつけて暑い季節に咲き続けて涼しげに見えます。

トケイソウはとても変わった形の花をつけます。朝開花して夕方にはしぼんでしまう一日花です。、雌しべが３本に分かれていて、時計の長針、短針、秒針のように見え、花びらが円形に並び文字盤の様に見えるため、「時計草」と日本では呼ばれています。一日花なので、前日に咲いた花はもう咲きません。花の数は毎日異なり、少ない日もあり、多い日もあります。しぼんだ花にはたまに実が付きますが食べられません。

今日の動画：梅雨明けの庭巡り

The end of the rainy season has been officially declared, and the maximum temperature here during the day rose to 36.3°C, the highest in Japan. Roses are blooming here and there in the garden. Blue flowers are in bloom in the blue border, and several one-day-bloom passion flowers are flowering on the wall of the garden room. In the potager, small watermelons, cherry tomatoes, edamame and asparagus are growing. Looking up at the sky, I saw a dragonfly flying by. Higher up, a kite was also soaring. The hot summer is set to continue. Watering will become a daily routine.

梅雨明け宣言があり、日中は当地で最高気温が36.3℃まで上がり、日本で一番高い気温でした。庭では所々でバラが咲いています。青のボーダー花壇では青い花たちが咲いていて、ガーデンルームの壁では一日花のトケイソウもいくつも咲いています。ポタジェでは小玉スイカやミニトマト、枝豆、アスパラガスなどが育っています。空を見上げるとトンボが飛んでいました。さらに上空ではトビも飛んでいました。これから暑い夏が続きます。水やりが日課となります。

FLOWERS HAVE STARTED TO BLOOM ON THE GREEN CURTAIN (緑のカーテンに花が咲き出しました)

 

We’ll soon be entering the rainy season, followed by the scorching heat of midsummer. To provide shade for the garden room, where the afternoon sun shines through the window, I’ve trained climbing plants from the walls on either side to form a green curtain. The vines have grown quite a bit and have started to flower. On the left is a potato vine, and on the right is a passion flower.

間もなく梅雨の季節に入り、そのあと猛暑の真夏がやってきます。西日の入るガーデンルームの窓に両側の壁からつる植物による緑のカーテンを伸ばして日よけにします。だいぶんつるが伸びてきていて、花もつけはじめました。左側がツルハナナス、右側がトケイソウです。

PRUNING CLIMBING PLANTS ON THE GARDEN ROOM WALL (ガーデンルーム壁面のつる植物の剪定)

 

Climbing plants (potato vine and passion flower) are trained along the walls on either side of the west-facing windows in the garden room. These vines are also trained over the windows to form a green curtain that softens the summer sunlight. Both plants are nearly evergreen in this region, but they are pruned every winter. Dead branches, thin branches, and overgrown shoots are cut away. Pruning begins with the branches near the windows, followed by trimming both sides to complete the task. Come spring, new shoots emerge. By summer, the branches and leaves become lush, forming a green curtain that softens the heat and delights us with its pretty flowers.

ガーデンルームの西向きの窓の両側の壁につる性植物（ツルハナナスとトケイソウ）を誘引しています。そのつるを窓の上にも誘引して、夏の日差しを和らげる緑のカーテンにしています。どちらも当地ではほぼ常緑ですが、毎年冬に剪定しています。枯れた枝、細い枝、徒長した枝などを切ります。まず、窓の所の枝から始め、そして両側の剪定をして完成す。春になると新芽が伸びだして、夏には枝葉が茂って緑のカーテンとなり暑さを和らげてくれ、可愛らしい花をつけて楽しませてくれます。

GREEN CURTAIN OF VINE PLANTS (つる植物の緑のカーテン)

 

When the afternoon sun shines through the windows in summer, the room becomes very hot, but if you hang curtains made of plant leaves on the outside of the windows, the sunlight is blocked to a comfortable degree, and green light filters through the leaves into the room, making it a pleasant place to be. 

Outside the large window of our garden room, we have created green curtains using climbing Potato vine and Passion flower. These are perennial plants that are pruned back in winter, but by early summer, they grow many vines and become lush. They are also resistant to pests and diseases, making them ideal climbing plants for green curtains.  

真夏の西日が窓から差すと部屋がとても暑くなりますが、窓の外側に植物の葉でカーテンをすると日差しが適度に遮られ、葉を通して緑の光が部屋に入り、部屋を居心地よくしてくれます。

ガーデンルームの大きな窓の外にはツルハナナスとトケイソウで緑のカーテンを作っています。多年草で冬に枝を短く剪定しますが、初夏にはたくさんのつるを伸ばして茂ります。病害虫もあまりなく、緑のカーテンに適したつる植物です。

PASSION FLOWERS IN THE RAIN (雨にぬれるトケイソウ)

 

It has been raining, but there are a lot of passion flowers in bloom. The flowers wilt in a day, so it changes every day. On days when the number of flowers is low, only one or two bloom. The flowers are firm and do not lose their shape in the rain.

雨が続いていますが、トケイソウがたくさん咲いています。花は一日でしぼむので、毎日変わります。少ない日は１，２個しか咲きません。しっかりした花なので雨にぬれても花の形がくずれることはありません。
