It is the time of year when the akebia fruits ripen. In our garden We grow wild Akebia trifoliata (akebia with three leaves) and the cultivar of akebia 'Murasaki-suisho' (Purple Crystal). It produces small, dark purple flowers in spring and short, sausage-shaped fruits, which turn brightly coloured and split vertically in autumn. The white jelly-like part around the seeds becomes very sweet and is eaten.
The first to ripen are the wild akebia, which have a beautiful mixture of red and purple colours.
