The standard rose (Mary Rose) in the potager garden was planted when the garden was first laid out over ten years ago. Each May, it produced beautiful pink flowers and became something of a symbolic tree for the potager.
Around last year, the tree began to show signs of declining vigour. Sawdust emerged from the rootstock, suggesting longhorn beetle larvae had entered the trunk and were feeding on it.
It did flower again this May, but from around summer, some branches began to die back. By autumn, most of the branches had died.
Consequently, I decided to remove this rose. Digging into the soil revealed a dozen of Japanese beetle larvae, and the rose's roots had been almost entirely consumed by the larvae. These larvae were the culprits.
For now, I've decided to plant some flower seedlings. These are a large Echinacea grown from seed in the side yard garden and a small Rudbeckia seedling I recently purchased. I shall take my time considering whether to plant another standard rose.

Dear Poirot
It is always such a shame to have to remove a plant, especially a rose. I had to remove a rose which was doing really well, but a bit too well, starting to shade out other plants. It had also sent suckers through the border and I am still fighting with some of these!
Best wishes
Ellie
Dear Ellie
削除Thank you for your comments.
It was such a shame about the rose that had bloomed so beautifully for us every year.
