PRUNING JAPANESE BOXWOOD (マメツゲの剪定)

 

'Mametsuge' (Ilex crenata f bullata) is a horticultural species of Ilex crenata commonly used for hedges in Japan, or more precisely, Japanese holly, but it is sometimes called Japanese boxwood because of its resemblance to boxwood. 

We use this in our garden as a hedge in front of our brick wall. We grew it from a small seedling, but it has grown so large over the years that it has overpowered the garden path and we have to prune it back hard from time to time. This time we cut the new branches that grew this summer.

Pruning is generally done with hedge shears or an hedge trimmer, but in our garden it is often done with pruning secateurs. The advantage of cutting with secateurs is that there is less damage to the leaves (they are cut in half or scarred and it stays with them forever).The disadvantage is that it takes extra time.

It is a small garden and I try to prune with secateurs if I can spare the time.

マメツゲは日本で生垣によく使われるイヌツゲの園芸種で、正確に言えばJapanese hollyですが、セイヨウツゲのboxwoodに似ているため、Japanese boxwoodと呼んだりしています。

私たちの庭ではレンガ塀の前の生垣にこれを使っています。小さな苗から育てましたが、年々大きくなって、園路を圧迫するほどになり、時々強く剪定をします。今回はこの夏に伸びた新しい枝を切りました。

剪定には一般には刈り込み鋏や電動刈り込み機を使うことが多いですが、私達の庭では剪定鋏を使ってすることもよくあります。剪定鋏で切るメリットは、葉の傷（半分に切られたり、傷がついたりしてそれがずっと残る）が少ないことです。デメリットは時間が余計にかかることです。

小さな庭ですし、時間の余裕があれば剪定鋏での剪定をするようにしています。
