SHOPPING RAILWAY SLEEPERS AND HERB SEEDLINGS (枕木とハーブ苗の買い物)

It was the coldest morning of this winter this morning.  (-0.4℃)

We went shopping sleepers to a large DIY center.  

It was 50 minutes drive.  

My wife made steps by using sleepers several years ago, 

and some of the sleepers have been rotting, 

which made it a bit dangerous for us to walk up and down.  

So, we decided to replace the rotted ones

with 'new' used sleepers.  

今朝はこの冬で一番の冷え込みでした.

大型ホームセンターで今日は買い物、

車で50分のところです.

数年前に家内が枕木で階段をつくりました.

そして枕木の何本かが朽ちてきていて、

上り下りの際にちょっと危なくなってきています.

それで朽ちてきた枕木を「新しい」中古枕木に取り替えることにしました.

This was the third time we visited this big DIY center. 

このホームセンターに来るのは3度目でした.

We found reclaimed railway sleepers imported from Australia.  

オーストラリアから輸入の中古の枕木を見つけました.

We selected better-quality sleepers to buy.
よさそうな枕木を選びます.

And we bought five sleepers with the length of 80 cm.

Just the same length as sleepers in our garden. 

そして、長さ80センチのを5本買いました. 

ちょうど庭の枕木と同じ長さです.

Then we went to the nursery section.  

There were so many seedlings of herbs, and we bought some of them. 

次に園芸コーナーへ移動、

たくさんハーブ苗があって、いくつか買いました.

NARCISSUS FLOWERS (スイセンの花)

Beside the path from the main garden to the new garden, 

narcissus flowers are in bloom now.  

There is a wonderful scent.  

There are three varieties.  

They have white petals with different colours of 'trumpet'; 

dark yellow, light yellow and white.  

メインガーデンから新しい庭へいく道端に

スイセンが咲いています。.

とてもいい香りが漂っています.

3つの品種があります.

どれも白い花びらですが、中の筒状の部分（副花冠）の色が

濃い黄色、薄い黄色、そして白です. 

Some flower stems have been broken from weight of rain trapped

 in the flower petals.  

I cut them and arranged them in a nozzle of a small fountain.  

花を濡らす雨の重さで茎が折れているものがあります.

それらを切って小さな噴水の噴出孔んい生けました.

A YEAR-END CONCERT (年末コンサート)

We went to a year-end concert with a couple in the neighbourhood

 whose daughter is an oboist of the local orchestra (Orchestra Style K).   

In Japan, it is a tradition to play Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in year-end concerts.  

近所のご夫婦と一緒に年末コンサートに出かけました.
お嬢さんがオーケストラでオーボエを演奏しておられます.
日本では年末コンサートでは第九を演奏するのが伝統になっていますね.

Orchestra Style K consists of young talented players in Kyushu and Yamaguchi. 

Its chorus was song by Munakata Daiku Chorus, 

members of which are residents of Munakata area (west of Fukuoka City). 

オーケストラ スタイル Kは九州・山口地区を中心に活躍する
若い演奏家たちが集まっています.

合唱は福岡市の東に位置する宗像地区の住民から成る
むなかた「第九」合唱団が歌います.

At the end of the concert, they played a school song of  the Minami-Kesen-Numa elementary school in Miyagi prefecture. 

This school had been destroyed by the ｔunami 

at the Great East Japan Earthquake (March 11, 2011),

 and the city of Kesen-Numa decided to close it dow in 2012. 

The conductor of the orchestra, Mr Kotaro Kimura, has been playing the school song

 since that, and he made and presented CDs of the song to children of the school.  

The school was closed down, however, the song lives forever in their hearts.

コンサートの最後に宮城県の南気仙沼小学校の校歌が演奏されました

この小学校は2011年の東日本大震災の津波で破壊され、翌年廃校と決定されました

このオーケストラの指揮者の木村厚太郎さんはそれ以来この小学校の校歌を演奏し続け、
校歌のCDを製作して小学校の子供たちにプレゼントしました

小学校は閉鎖されましたが、校歌はずっと彼らの心の中に生き続けるでしょう

TODAY'S HARVEST OF KOHLRABI (コールラビ、今日の収穫)

We harvested purple-colour kohlrabi this morning.  

The size of their swollen stems was a bit smaller than a tennis ball
(a diameter of ca. 6 cm).  

The taste and texture of kohlrabi are similar to those of a broccoli stem or cabbage heart, but milder and sweeter.  

My wife is making  pot-au-feu using kohlrabi.  

今日の午前中に紫色のコールラビを収穫. 

茎の膨らんだ部分の大きさはテニスボールよりちょと小さい直径6センチほど

味や歯ざわりはブロッコリーの茎やキャベツの芯のような感じです. 

家内はポトフを作っています.

FLOWERING JADE PLANT (カネノナルキの花）

We have been cultivating this jade plant (Crassula ovata)
for more than twenty years.  

We moved this pot to this place (under the trees in the main garden)
from a veranda of the flat where we once lived three years ago.
The plant did not flower well for two years, however,
it is flowering beautifully this month for the first time in three years.  

We love its light pink star-like flowers.


このカネノナルキはもう20年以上育てています.
3年前にマンションのベランダから庭のこの場所（木の下）に移動したのですが、
それから2年は花をあまりつけませんでした.
そして今月、3年ぶりにきれいに咲いています.
この淡いピンク色の星型の花が気に入っています.

CHRISTMAS PARTY OF FUKUOKA JAPAN-BRITISH SOCIETY （福岡日英協会クリスマスパーティー）

Yesterday evening, Christmas Concert & Friendship Party of the Fukuoka Japan-British Society was held at the hotel in Fukuoka City.

This year's Christmas concert was hand-bell musics performed by the hand-bell club of the local high school (Fukuoka Futaba-Gakuen).
They played several Christmas musics and we really enjoyed them.

今年のクリスマスコンサートは福岡双葉中学・高等学校ハンドベル部の演奏でした.

After the concert, we enjoyed a party,
 eating delicious foods, talking, drawing a lottery and singing Jingle Bell together.


コンサートのあとはパーティーです.

DARK AND WET DAYS (暗くて湿った日々)

So many dark and wet days we have had since last month.
 A warm and wet winter is forecast by Japan Meteorological Agency,
and the El Nino phenomenon in which a warm ocean current
 occurring off the coast of Peru is thought to be the reason for that.

According to the data of Japan Meteorological Agency,
the weather of the latest thirty days in our city was
Raifall: 193.5 mm (236% of the average)
Ｈours of sunlight:　67.8 hours (56% of the average)
Average temperature: 13.2℃　（+2.6℃ than usual)

Ｔhe numerical data clearly showed
 that there were more dark and wet days than usual.



暗くて湿った日が先月から多くなっています。
今年の冬は暖冬で雨が多いとの予想で、
エルニーニョ現象（東太平洋の海面水温の上昇）の影響だそうです。

気象庁によると過去30日間の当地の気象データは、

雨量193.5ミリ　236％
日照時間67.8時間　56％
平均気温13.2℃　+2.6℃

やはり雨が多くて日照が少ないことが数字でも明らかです。

It is difficult to sweep wet flower petals of Camellia sasanqua.  

サザンカの花びらもぬれて掃除が思うようにできません。

Flowers of white oxalis seldom open because they open only in the sunlight.  

日が当たるときだけ開くオキザリスの花はめったに開きません。

The bench is always wet and we can't sit there.

ベンチはいつもぬれていて、ゆっくり腰掛けることもできません。

We really miss the sunlight in these days.


本当に太陽が恋しいこのごろです・・・
