TOAD LILY HAS STARTED TO FLOWER (ホトトギス開花)
Toad lily has a unique shape of flower.
Its flower bud is dark red, and a petal is reddish pink with dark red dots.
Toad lily has started to flower behind the wooden white fence in our garden.
It continues to flower until early winter.
ホトトギスは変わった形の花です.
蕾は暗赤色で花弁は赤味がかったピンクで暗赤色の斑点があります.
庭では白い木のフェンスの後ろで咲き始めています.
冬の初めまで咲きます.

The Birth flower of October 27th is lantana.
Its flower language in Japan is "Change of Mind", "Agreement", etc.
"Change of Mind" seems to come from its change of flower colors from beginning to end.
However, white lantana never changes its mind:)
10月27日の誕生花は「ランタナ」
日本でのランタナの花言葉には「心変わり」「合意」などがありますが、
「心変わり」となったのはランタナの代表品種は開花から次第に色が変化していくところからきたようです.
でも白のランタナは「心変わり」はしません（笑）

'MARY ROSE' IN OCTOBER (十月のメアリーローズ)
Rosa 'Mary Rose' (David Austin) is one of my favorite roses.
Its flower looks like that of herbaceous peony with so many pure-pink petals.
Mary Rose has started to flower a week ago, and many pretty flowers are now in bloom on both sides of the sleeper steps.
デビッドオースチンのバラ「メアリーローズ」は大好きなバラの一つです.
その花はシャクヤクに似て、たくさんのピュアなピンク色の花びらを持ちます.
一週間ぐらい前に咲き始めて、枕木の階段の両側でたくさんの可愛らしい花が今咲いています.

CREEPING LANTANA (コバノランタナ)
Lantana montevidensis is a variety of lantana which has smaller leaves and purple flowers, and it flowers repeatedly from spring to autumn.
We grow it in the central flower bed, and it is flowering now.
コバノランタナは小さな葉と紫の花のランタナで、春から秋まで繰り返し咲きます.
中央花壇で育てているコバノランタナが今咲いています.

CHERRY SAGE AND TOMATO (チェリーセージとトマト)
Cherry sage in the herb bed didn't flower in this summer, and it is in bloom now.
Its pinkish red is beautiful in contrast to green leaves.
ハーブ花壇のチェリーセージは夏は咲きませんでしたが、今咲いています.
ピンクがかった赤い花は葉の緑とのコントラストが綺麗です.
Mini tomato is still flowering with some green fruits.
The weather is becoming cool and most of flowers will not bear fruits.
ミニトマトの花がまだ咲いていて、少し緑色の実がついています.
涼しくなってきているので、ほどんどの花は実をつけないで終わりそうです.

MEXICAN BUSH SAGE (アメジストセージ)
Mexican bush sage is flowering in the central flower bed.
Its slightly-reddish purple flower looks like velvet because of fine hairs on it.
アメジストセージが中央花壇で咲いています.
少し赤みがかった紫色の花は、
その表面にある繊細な毛のためビロードのように見えます.

INSECT PEST DAMAGE (害虫の被害)
Sometimes we have severe pest damages.
Echium candicans bore wonderful flowers last April in the blue border.
This plant is perennial and lives for several years.
I cut flower spikes after flowering in June, and it looks vigorous in summer.
However, it suddenly got weak and died in September,
and its cause became clear; pest!
Cambium of the base of its trunk was circumferentially eaten by some pest.
I couldn't find the pest in it.
ひどい害虫の被害がときどきあります.
四月にはブルーボーダー花壇でエキウムカンディカンスが素晴らしく咲きました.
この植物は多年草で数年育ちます.
六月に花が終わったあと花穂を切り、夏の間は元気でした.
でも、九月に突然弱って枯れてしまい、
原因は害虫と判明！
幹の下のほうで形成層が全周食べられていました.
そのなかに昆虫は見つかりませんでした.

So, I dug it out and planted a young plant which I had grown in a pot.

Glory bush suddenly changed its leaves red in September.
I already experienced this once,
and I easily found the signs of pest in its large branches again.
There are small intact stems with green leaves left,
and it will grow and bear much flowers again.
九月に突然ノボタンの葉が赤くなりました.
一度経験していたので、大きな枝にまた害虫のしるしがあるのをすぐ見つけました.
小さい枯れずにすんだ枝が残っているので
また大きくなってたくさん花を咲かせてくれるでしょう.
