Sometimes we have severe pest damages.
Echium candicans bore wonderful flowers last April in the blue border.
This plant is perennial and lives for several years.
I cut flower spikes after flowering in June, and it looks vigorous in summer.
However, it suddenly got weak and died in September,
and its cause became clear; pest!
Cambium of the base of its trunk was circumferentially eaten by some pest.
I couldn't find the pest in it.

Dear Poirot
ReplyDeleteIt is always sad to find that a plant has been injured or killed by a pest or disease. I have had to remove several of my fuchsias as they had fuchsia rust and suddenly lost all their leaves.
It is good that you had some plants to replace them with. I hope your new plants do well.
Best wishes
Ellie
Thank you Ellie.
DeletePest lives with us, and it is not inevitable.
That was such a beautiful big plant and so such a shame to lose it to a pest. It was good you had a cutting you could replace it with even if it will take a while to grow as big.
ReplyDeleteThis alas is one of the problems we gardeners have to face, the dreaded pest attacking a plant and only seeing the problem when it's too late.
Thank you Dee.
DeleteI think I could find it earlier.
But it was so hot and humid in summer in our area, and I couldn't check plants in detail...
