PICKING FRUITS OF THREE KINDS OF CITRUS (柑橘類の収穫)

 

It's time to harvest the citrus fruits. At the end of every year, I harvest lemons and Citrus maxima fruits and store them in a cold room. 

柑橘類の収穫の時期が来ました. 毎年年末にレモンや文旦の収穫をして、寒い部屋に保存しています. 

Citrus maxima 'Tosa-bundan' is stored for about a month and then enjoyed until around March. 

土佐文旦は、1か月ほど保存してから三月ごろまで楽しめます. 

Lemons are used for cooking and drinking, and We squeeze the juice out of the unused portions and freeze them for later use. 

レモンは料理や飲み物に使い、使いきれない分は果汁を絞って冷凍保存しています. 

The kumquats will continue to ripen little by little, so we are eating the ripe ones raw. They have a wonderful aroma and taste. 

キンカンは少しずつこれからも熟していくので、熟した分を生食しています. すばらしい香りと味がします.

HELLEBORE (クリスマスローズ)

 

A hybrid double hellebore in a pot is blooming beautifully. It is the same hellebore that we were surprised to see blooming in June this year. The breed has been improved so much that it blooms much longer.

鉢植えのハイブリッドの八重のクリスマスローズがきれいに咲いています. 今年の六月にも咲いて驚いた、あのクリスマスローズです. 品種改良が重ねられて、ずいぶん長く咲くようになっているのですね。

ACANTHUS MOLLIS IN WINTER (冬のアカンサスモリス)

 

Acanthus mollis is a cold-hardy perennial with beautiful foliage that blooms in May. In mid-summer, it goes dormant with the ground dying off, and in autumn, the leaves grow back. During the winter, its lush foliage becomes an important green color in the garden. 

アカンサスモリスは美しい葉が特徴の耐寒性多年草で、5月ごろに美しい花を咲かせます. 真夏には地上部が枯れて休眠し、秋にまた葉が伸びてきます. 冬の間は青々とした葉が茂って、庭の大切な緑色になります. 

A variegated variety of Acanthus has been grown in the urn. 

斑入りのアカンサスを鉢で育てています.

CUTTING ELEPHANT EAR LEAVES (クワズイモの刈り取り)

 

Alocasia odora is a perennial plant native to East Asia with beautiful large leaves, also known as elephant ear. It is sensitive to frost, so the above-ground parts of the plant die back in winter, but if the weather is not extremely cold, it will survive the winter and sprout again in spring. It is best to cut off the leaves in early winter, as the cold-damaged leaves become difficult to treat. 

クワズイモは象の耳とも表現される大きな葉が美しい東アジア原産の多年草です. 霜に弱いので、冬は地上部が枯れますが、極端な寒さでなければ冬を越して春にまた芽吹きます. 寒さにやられた葉は処理が難しくなるので、初冬に葉は切り取るのがよいと思います. 

Let the cut leaves dry a bit, then cut them into small pieces and put them in the compost bin. 

切った葉は少し乾かしてから、細かく切ってコンポストビンに入れます. 

There were also many red fruits. If you want to increase the number of seedlings, collect the seeds, but if you don't want to increase the number of seedlings, don't leave them unattended. 

たくさん赤い実も付いていました. 実生で増えていくので、増やしたい場合は種を採りますが、増やしたくない場合は放置しないようにします. 

Finally, cover it with garden fleece to protect it from the cold.

最後に、不織布をかけて寒さから保護します.

THE MEADOW IN FULL BLOOM (草原は花盛り)

 

Mexican marigolds have spread out to form a little meadow. And now they are in full bloom. The yellow colour is noticeable even on a cloudy day, but on a sunny day it becomes even more vivid. The sweet smell of the flowers fills your body as you walk through the meadow. 

レモンマリーゴールドが拡がってちょっとした草原をなしています. そして、いよいよ満開となっています. 曇った日でも黄色は目立ちますが、晴れた日には一段と黄色い花色が鮮やかになります. 中を歩くと、その甘い香りに体じゅうが包まれます.

CAMELLIA JAPONICA 'WABISUKE' (ツバキ、侘助)

 

Camellia japonica Wabisuke is a flower often used in the tokonoma (alcove) of tea rooms. It is a small, white flower with petals that do not open wide and fall apart. Perhaps this is in keeping with the spirit of the tea ceremony. 

I planted it in the back of my garden many years ago to use as a flower arrangement, and every year it starts to bloom around this time. 

椿の侘助は茶室の床の間によく飾られる花です. 小さくて白い花で、花びらが大きく開いてしまわずに散ります. それが茶道の精神と通うものがあるのかもしれません. 

生け花に使おうと思ってずいぶん前に庭に一番奥に植えて、毎年今頃から花を咲かせます.

ROSA 'MARY ROSE' IN EARLY WINTER (初冬のバラ、メアリーローズ)

 It's early winter and most of the roses are gone, but the Mary Rose is in its last glory. The Mary Rose is a wonderful rose created by David Austin. It is a rosette pink rose that opens to a gorgeous peony-like form. It is one of our favourite roses. 

初冬になりバラもほとんど終わっていますが、メアリーローズが最後の輝きを放っています. メアリーローズはデビッドオースチンが作り出した素晴らしいバラです. ロゼット咲きのピンクのバラで、開くとシャクヤクのような豪華な姿になります. 私たちのお気に入りのバラです.
