Petit English Garden of MARPLE & POIROT

My wife and I started gardening in Fukuoka (Japan) in 2003. There was nothing but muddy clayey sloping land. At the beginning we made several structure such as steps and paths, and planted turf, fruit trees, roses, herbs etc. In 2010, we visited several famous English gardens, including Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Mottisfont Abbey Garden and Hidcote Manor Garden. We were shocked by the glory of those gardens. Since then, we have been trying to make small but glorious gardens by ourselves.

庭の紹介

　夫婦で庭づくりを福岡の郊外で2003年に始めました.　赤土むきだしの斜面にまず階段や園路をつくって芝をはり、果樹やバラ、ハーブなどを植えました.

　2010年にイギリスの有名なガーデンの、シシングハースト、モティスフォントアビー、ヒドコートマナーなどを回り、その素晴らしさに圧倒され、それから自分たちで小さくても素晴らしい庭をめざして庭づくりをつづけています.

CUTTING SEEDPODS OF GLOBE ARTICHOKE (アーティチョークの花がら切り)

The artichoke flowers, which bloomed beautifully in June, have now withered and become dried flowers. I cut off the flower fragments to use them as dried flowers again.

The large flowers are about five inches in diameter and are very powerful. They are already dry and not too heavy.

It is a pity that this variety of artichoke does not seem to produce seeds in its seedpods.

六月に美しく咲いたアーティチョークの花が今は枯れてドライフラワー状態になっています. ドライフラワーとしてまた利用しようと、花がらを切りました.

大きい花は直径が5インチほどあり、迫力があります. すでに乾いていて、それほど重くはありません.

この品種のアーティチョークの花がらには種はできないようで、種をとれないのは残念です.

PAT AUSTIN ROSE IN SUMMER (夏のパットオースチン)

Rose 'Pat Austin' flowers repeatedly well from early summer to late autumn . Pat Austin in front of the brick wall is flowering again at the end of a new branch . The rose flowers are darker in colour than in early summer .

バラのパットオースチンは初夏から晩秋までよく繰り返し花を咲かせます. レンガ塀の前のパットオースチンが新しい枝の先にまた花を咲かせています. バラの花色は初夏に比較して濃い色を呈しています.

WHITE AND PINK WATER LILY (白とピンクの睡蓮)

White and pink water lilies are blooming in a small pool made from my late mother's bathtub. Recently the white water lilies have been in poor health and I have been worried about them, but they have finally bloomed. White killifish are swimming around them. These are important fish that eat mosquito larvae.

亡き母が使っていたバスタブを使って作った小さな池で、白とピンクのスイレンが咲いています. 最近は白いスイレンは元気がなくて心配していましたが、やっと咲いてくれました. その周りを白いメダカたちが泳いでいます. 蚊の幼虫を食べてくれる大切な魚たちです.

CHORUS OF CICADAS IN THE MORNING (朝の蝉の合唱)

Recently, the cicadas have been singing louder in the mornings. When I go out into the garden, I can hear the cicadas singing and singing in chorus on many trees in the neighbourhood.

このところ、朝からセミの鳴き声が大きくなってきました. 庭に出るとご近所のあちこちの木々でセミが鳴いて、合唱しています.

In the garden, summer flowers are blooming everywhere. The blue-purple duranta is one of them, with many flowers on its drooping branches.

庭では夏の花があちこちで咲いています. 青紫のデュランタもその一つで、枝垂れる枝にたくさんの花が咲いています.

The other flower is a bright yellow canna, the opposite colour to duranta. It was initially grown in a bathtub pool, but grew too large and was planted in the ground. It tends to overgrow a little.

もう一つの花は、デュランタとは反対色の鮮やかな黄色のカンナです. 当初はバスタブの池で育てていましたが、大きくなりすぎて地植えしました. 少し増えすぎるきらいがあります.

ORANGE FLOWERS IN THE MAIN GARDEN (主庭のオレンジ色の花たち)

Today I would like to show you some orange flowers that are blooming beautifully right now in the heat wave.

The first one is a rudbeckia, which I had divided from a larger plant and potted. The original large plant has died of disease and looks a little sad.

猛暑の中で今きれいに咲いているオレンジ色の花たちを今日は紹介します.

最初はルドベキアで、大きな株から株分けして鉢植えにしていたものです. 元の大株が病気で枯れてしまって、ちょっと寂しそうです.

The next one is an aster. I have many kinds of asters, but this orange one blooms in mid-summer.

次はアスター. 何種類もアスターは育てていますが、このオレンジは真夏に花を咲かせます.

The last one is a dahlia. They are planted in the ground with the roses on the brick wall. It has been flowering every year for about 10 years and is very healthy.

最後はダリアです. レンガ塀のバラと一緒に地植えしています. もう10年ぐらい毎年花を咲かせていて、とても元気です.

ELECTRIC FENCE FOR PREVENTING BLUEBERRY DAMAGE BY BADGERS (電気柵でアナグマによるブルーベリーの被害防止)

We have been picking blueberries every weekend this month and making jam .

今月は毎週末にブルーベリーの収穫をして、ジャムを作っています.

Badgers that live nearby sometimes enter our garden and dig up a bit of soil in search of food, and since the blueberries started to ripen, they have been breaking branches off the blueberries. So, for the first time in several years, we put up an electric fence around the blueberries. There has been no damage since it was installed.

近くに住んでいるアナグマが時々うちの庭に入って餌を探して土を少し掘り返したりしていますが、ブルーベリーが熟し始めてから、ブルーベリーの枝を折るなどの被害が出てきていました. そこで数年ぶりにブルーベリーの周りに電気柵を設置しました. 設置してからは被害はありません.

ROSES IN MID-JULY (七月中旬のバラたち)

Yesterday was cloudy with occasional rain. I went down into the garden to photograph the roses that were in bloom. There were 13 different roses in flower. The flowers are not perfect due to heat, pests and diseases, but they are blooming very hard. Later that night it rained heavily and I felt sorry for the roses.

昨日は曇りで時々雨がふりました. 庭に降りて今咲いているバラたちを撮影して回りました. 13種類のバラが咲いていました. 暑さや害虫、病気などで花たちは完ぺきではありませんが、一所懸命に咲いていました. この後、夜に強い雨が降って、バラたちが可哀想でした.
