PLANTING CABBAGE SEEDLINGS IN LATE DECEMBER (年末のキャベツ苗の植え付け)
In the potager, the asparagus has withered, marking the end of this season. I pruned them back to ground level. The North Pole and chamomile that bloomed this spring have grown, and the North Pole is beginning to flower a little. The mini tomatoes, planted twice this spring and summer, failed to ripen due to the cold and are now finished. I pulled them up and disposed of them in the compost bin.
Following the mini tomatoes, cabbage seedlings have been planted. Insect netting has been placed over them to protect the leaves from pests. They are scheduled for harvest next spring.
ポタジェではアスパラガスが枯れてきて、今シーズンも終了です。地際で剪定しました。今年の春に咲いたノースポールやカモミールが育ち、ノースポールは少し花が咲き始めています。春と夏に二度植え付けて育てたミニトマトも寒さで実が熟せず、もう終わりです。引き抜いてコンポスト容器に処分しました。
ミニトマトの後にはキャベツの苗を植え付けました。防虫ネットをかぶせて虫から葉を守ります。来春の収穫予定です。

CAMELLIA SASANQUA AND KUMQUAT (サザンカとキンカン)
To the left of the shade garden stands a seedless kumquat tree. Come December, you can see its fruits gradually ripening to a golden yellow. Being seedless, they can be eaten whole. They possess a truly splendid flavour. All the fruits ripen gradually over the period up until spring.
シェードガーデンの左に種なしキンカンの木があります。12月になると少しずつ黄色く熟す実が見られます。種なしなので、まるごと食べられます。とても風味が素晴らしいです。春ごろまでかけて実はすべて熟します。
Behind this stands a sasanqua camellia. Again, come December, its pink flowers begin to open little by little. The blooms can be seen right through until January. During this season when few flowers appear, their vivid yellow and pink hues brighten the garden.
その奥にはサザンカの木があります。これも12月になると少しずつピンクの花が開き始めます。そして1月まで花が見られます。花が少ないこの時期に、鮮やかな黄色やピンクの色が庭を彩ります。

WHITE WABISUKE FLOWERS (白侘助の花)
Wabisuke is a type of camellia used for decorating tea rooms. Smaller than the common camellia, it produces single, semi-open flowers. It is caracterised by its degenerated stamens lacking pollen, it rarely sets fruit. In our garden, we are growing it in front of the compost bin in the bluebell garden.
侘助は茶室に飾るのに用いられる椿の一種で、ツバキより小ぶりで、半開状に咲く一重の花。雄しべが退化し花粉がなく、結実しにくいのが特徴です。私たちの庭ではブルーベルの庭のコンポスト容器の前で育てています。

EARLY WINTER ROSES DRECHED IN COLD RAIN (冷たい雨に濡れる初冬のバラ)
This autumn's roses did not bloom particularly well due to pest damage. ’Scarborough Fair' rose, which has since recovered, is now in bloom with numerous buds. Though drenched by the cold winter rain and looking rather chilled, the flowers last a long time. The cherry sage in the herb bed still bears many red blooms.
今年の秋バラは害虫の影響であまりきれいに咲きませんでした。その後復活したバラ、スキャボロフェアはつぼみをたくさんつけて、今咲いています。冬の冷たい雨に濡れてとても寒そうですが、花は長く持ちます。ハーブ畑のチェリーセージはまだたくさんの赤い花をつけています。

GLORY BUSH FLOWERS IN EARLY WINTER (初冬に咲くノボタンの花)
The glory bush is a flowering shrub that produces purple flowers in autumn. It is said to have poor cold hardiness and may die when frost sets in, but in our garden, frost is rare and it overwinters without issue. However, when it gets cold, the buds become reluctant to open and take a long time to bloom.
ノボタンは秋に紫色の花をつける花木です。耐寒性が弱く、霜がおりると枯れるらしいですが、私たちの庭には霜が降りることはほとんどなく、問題なく冬越ししています。しかし、寒くなるとつぼみが開花しにくくなってなかなか咲きません。

AUTUMN POTATO HARVEST (秋じゃが収穫)
Seed potatoes are planted in March and September, with harvests occurring in June and December. While the December yield is smaller compared to June, cultivation continues to secure seed potatoes for the following spring.
This year, seed potatoes were planted on the 31st of August. They sprouted in September, grew substantially by October, and even flowered. Come December, as the weather turned cold and the leaves began to wither, they were harvested.
ジャガイモは3月と9月に種芋を植えて、6月と12月に収穫します。6月の収穫に比べて12月は少ないですが、次の春の種芋を確保するために栽培しています。
今年は8月の31日に種芋を植え付けました。9月に芽吹き、10月には大きく育って花も咲きました。そして12月になって寒くなり葉が枯れてきたので収穫しました。

DUCKS AND SHEEP SWAP ROLES
The duck ornaments in the garden were found gathering dust on a shelf at a local garden centre some twelve years ago, looking rather faded. I bought them for a bargain price. Since then, they've been the main garden's mascots.
庭にあるアヒルの置物は12年ほど前に近くの園芸店の棚の上にほこりをかぶって色もあせたような状態で置いてあるのを見つけて、安い値段で買ってきたものです。それからずっとメインガーデンのマスコットでした。
For the past few years, it had been spreading its charm in front of the arbour seat in the blue border flowerbed. However, after being constantly exposed to direct sunlight, wind and rain, the fibreglass had gradually deteriorated. Numerous small holes had appeared in their backs, and the paint on them beak and feet was peeling off. I decided it was time for it to retire.
ここ数年はずっと青のボーダー花壇のアーバーシートの前で愛嬌を振りまいていました。しかし、直射日光や風雨にさらされ続けて、FRPが少しずつ壊れてきて、背中に小さな穴がたくさんできてきて、くちばしや足のペンキも剥げてきて、もう引退だと思いました。
Though it might not be perfect, I patched the holes and repainted them, and they turned out rather nicely. So I decided to assign them the next task: keeping watch over the potager.
ダメかもしれないけれど、穴をふさいでペンキを塗りなおしてみると、けっこうきれいになりました。そこでポタジェの見回りを次の仕事として任せることにしました。
I chose two small sheep as the new garden ornaments for the main garden. They are two different types of little sheep. They are just the right size for the small garden. They are taking in the sights of the garden they've just arrived at.
新たにメインガーデンの置物としてヒツジを選びました。異なる種類の2匹の小さなヒツジたちです。小さな庭に適度な大きさの置物です。初めて来た庭をしっかり眺めています。
