CHESTNUTS (栗)

This week, we have been picking up chestnuts on the road in our neighbourhood 

during our daily walk in the morning.  

Chestnuts fell down on the road, and some of them were eaten 

by some wild animals (wild boars or badgers?), 

and we got the rest.  

今週は毎日の朝の散歩で

ご近所の道で栗を拾いました。

栗が道路に落ちて、それを野生の動物

（たぶんイノシシかアナグマ？）が食べ、

残りを私たちが拾います。

My wife made sweet-boiled chestnuts, 

and today I enjoyed them with ice cream and bean jam.  

It tasted very good.  

家内が栗の甘露煮を作って、

今日はアイスクリームとあんと一緒にいただきました。

とってもおいしかった。

Congratulations Hawks!! (ホークスおめでとう)

Fukuoka Softbank Hawks has won Pacific League Pennant tonight.  

Professional baseball team 'Hawks' was founded in 1938.  

Its base had been originally in Osaka,

 however, it moved to Fukuoka in Kyushu , Japan's southern island, in 1988.  

So, Hawks has been a local baseball team for 27 years.  

We really enjoyed today's game on TV, 

and we expect discount sales in celebration of the championship.  

福岡ソフトバンク・ホークスが今夜パリーグの優勝を決めました。

プロ野球の球団ホークスは1938年に誕生し、

もともと大阪が本拠地でしたが、

九州、福岡に1988年にやってきました。

地元の野球チームとして27年がたっています。

テレビで今夜の試合をとても楽しみました。

優勝を祝って始まる割引セールも楽しみです。

LAVENDER COLOUR FLOWERS （ラベンダー色の花たち）

The autumn is coming earlier than usual, 

and some bluish purple flowers are in bloom now 

in rather cool, dry and comfortable weather.  

秋がいつもより早く訪れ、涼しく乾いた気持ちのよい気候の中、

青紫の何種類かの花が今咲いています。

This is a kind of perennial aster, planted two years ago in the kitchen garden bed.  

これは宿根アスターで、2年前にポタジェの花壇に植えました。

The chaste tree in the border of the main garden has been flowering since July, 

and a hawk moth came to suck nectar from flowers again.  

メインガーデンのボーダーのセイヨウニンジンボクは7月から花を咲かせています。

スズメガが花の蜜を吸いにまた来ていました。

Under the chaste tree, blue mistflower is in bloom.  

Our gardening friend gave us young plants in July, 

and they bear fine delicate flowers now.  

セイヨウニンジンボクの下でセイヨウフジバカマの花が咲いています。

ガーデニング友達から七月に苗をいただき、

小さくて繊細な花を今つけています。

In the central bed, Mexican sage (Salvia leucantha) is blooming.  

Its velvety purple flowers are so beautiful.  

中央花壇にはメキシカンセージが咲いています。

ベルベットのような紫の花はとてもきれいです。

TRANSPLANTED HOSTAS (ギボウシの移植)

We planted four varieties of hosta beyond the plum trees several years ago 

and they have considerably grown, however, we can't see them 

because hellebore and spider plant grow ahead of them.  

So, we decided to transplant them to the front.

スモモの木の向こうに数年前に4種類のギボウシを植えました。

かなり大きく育ちましたが、その手前にクリスマスローズやオリヅルランが育って

よく見えないので、手前に植えなおすことにしました。

Oxalis purpurea alba has started to grow in the front of the border.  

The oxalis continues to flower from October to March
and brighten the winter garden.  

オキザリスが一番前列で葉をだしてきました。

この種類は10月から3月まで咲き続け、冬の庭を明るくしてくれます。

APPLES (リンゴ)

Some small apples 'Alps otome' have fallen and it's time for harvesting the apples.  

The apple is sour‐sweet and delicious.  

小さなリンゴのアルプス乙女が落ち始め、収穫の時期が来ました。

このリンゴは甘酸っぱくておいしいのです。

Today we harvested two dozens of the apples and my wife cooked them with sugar, butter, wine and cinnamon.  

It's wonderful and a great fun to cook home-grown fruits.  

We really enjoyed eating it.  

今日20個余りを収穫し、家内が砂糖、バター、ワイン、シナモンで煮リンゴにしました。

自家栽培の果実を調理するのはとても楽しいものです。

おいしくいただきました。

PLANTING IN NEW GARDEN (新しい庭への植栽)

Under the plum tree, lilac-purple flowers of Liriope muscari are in bloom.  

It is native in Japan in shady forests.  

I transplanted some of it into the new garden.  

Chameleon plants are growing well, and cuttings of hydrangea are also growing.

スモモの木の下にヤブランの青紫の花が咲いています。

日本で日かげの林床に自生する植物です。

いくつか新しい庭に移植しました。

ドクダミはよく育っていますし、アジサイの挿し芽も成長しています。

We are preparing to plant English bluebells in the new garden.  

Today I went to the local nursery to buy bluebell bulbs which I had ordered.  

We will plant them in the new garden soon.

注文していた球根を買いに今日ナーセリーに行ってきました。

近いうちに植えつけるつもりです。

WHITE LYCORIS (白いリコリス)

In the peony bed, creamy-white lycoris flowers are now in bloom.  

Withering leaves of peonies tell us that the summer is almost over.  

It was cloudy today and the highest temperature was 26 degrees Celsius. 

It's cool and I feel autumn.  

シャクヤクの花壇では今、クリームがかった白のリコリスが咲いています。

シャクヤクのしおれ始めた葉が夏がほとんど終わったことを知らせてくれます。

今日は曇りで、最高気温は摂氏26度でした。

涼しくて秋を感じます。

MARPLE'S PRESERVED FLOWERS (マープルのプリザーブド・フラワー)

These are my wife's works of preserved flower.
She has just begun to learn it since July.  

Today I bought glass vases at a local nursery and put them on the flowers.  

これは家内のプリザーブドフラワーの作品です。7月から習い始めたところです。

今日、近くのナーセリーでガラスの花瓶を買ってきてかぶせました。

I am looking forward to her progress on making preserved flowers from now on.  

これからの作品の進歩が楽しみです。

GROWING FLOWERS FROM SEEDS (種から育てる花)

We are growing some flower plants from seeds now, and today I show two of them.  

種から花をいくつか育てていますので、今日は２つ紹介します。

The first is Hibiscus mutabilis.  It is a deciduous shrub and is native in Japan.  

The picture of flowers was took at the beginning of August in our neighbourhood. 

 I had taken some seeds and sewed them in June.
Now its seedlings have been growing.  

ひとつはフヨウです。落葉性の低木で日本原産です。

花の写真は八月の初めに近所で撮ったものです。

種を取っていたので、六月にまきました。
今、苗は大きくなってきています。

 The other one is Mirabilis jalapa.
This is an annual or perennial plant and came to Japan at the beginning of 17th century.  

We found it at the sunny open area in our neighbourhood.  

I took some seeds and directly sowed in June.  Now they are growing well.  

もう一つはオシロイバナです。
これは一年草または多年草で、17世紀の初めに日本に渡来しました。

近所では日の当たる場所に見られます。

六月にいくつか種を取ってきて、直接まきました。今よく苗が育っています。
