Petit English Garden of MARPLE & POIROT

My wife and I started gardening in Fukuoka (Japan) in 2003. There was nothing but muddy clayey sloping land. At the beginning we made several structure such as steps and paths, and planted turf, fruit trees, roses, herbs etc. In 2010, we visited several famous English gardens, including Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Mottisfont Abbey Garden and Hidcote Manor Garden. We were shocked by the glory of those gardens. Since then, we have been trying to make small but glorious gardens by ourselves.

庭の紹介

　夫婦で庭づくりを福岡の郊外で2003年に始めました.　赤土むきだしの斜面にまず階段や園路をつくって芝をはり、果樹やバラ、ハーブなどを植えました.

　2010年にイギリスの有名なガーデンの、シシングハースト、モティスフォントアビー、ヒドコートマナーなどを回り、その素晴らしさに圧倒され、それから自分たちで小さくても素晴らしい庭をめざして庭づくりをつづけています.

TOAD LILY IN FULL BLOOM (ホトトギスが満開)

The toad lily is a perennial plant with beautiful reddish-purple flowers in autumn. It spreads by spills and underground stems and needs to be controlled as it will spread rapidly if left unchecked.

It has the same Japanese name as the bird, Hototogis (Cuculus poliocephalus), because the many dark spots on the flowers resemble the bird's pattern.

We grow it mainly in our bluebell garden. It only gets sun in the morning and for short periods in the afternoon. These photos were taken in the afternoon. It was windy and sometimes shook a lot.

ホトトギスは多年草で、秋に赤紫色の美しい花をつける植物です. 地下茎で広がり、放っておくとどんどん広がるので、うまくコントロールする必要があります.

ホトトギスという鳥と同じ名前がついていますが、花にあるたくさんの濃い斑点がその鳥の模様に似ているために付けられた名前です.

私たちの庭では主にブルーベルの庭で育てています. 朝日と午後の短い時間だけ日が照る場所です. 今回の撮影は午後の時間です. 風が強くて時々大きく揺れていました.

MAKING DRIED PERSIMMON (干し柿づくり)

Persimmon season has arrived and we harvested the coloured fruits the other day. This year again, we peel them, tie them with string and hang them on a sunny window sill to make dried persimmons. They are a very sweet winter preserve.

柿の季節が来て、先日色づいた実を収穫しました. 今年も皮をむいて糸で結び、日の当たる窓辺に吊るして干し柿を作ります. とても甘い冬の保存食です.

MAIN GARDEN NOW (今のメインガーデン)

Today I'm going to show you what the main garden looks like now . From the white fenced entrance, turn at the small fountain, down the sleeper steps, through the central flower beds to the shade garden, blue borders, bathtub pool and finally through the herb terraces to the brick wall.

今日は、今のメインガーデンの様子を紹介します. 白いフェンスの入り口から、小さな噴水のところを曲がって、枕木の階段を降り、中央花壇からシェードガーデン、ブルーボーダー、バスタブの池を巡り、最後にバーブの段々畑からレンガ塀へと向かいます.

ROSES BLOOMING IN AUTUMN (秋バラ)

The shrub roses by the sleeper steps, which we pruned at the beginning of September, have now started to flower beautifully. Thanks to these roses, which have withstood the harsh summer and strong typhoon winds, new branches are growing and blooming.

This year there are fewer bud-eating pests and more flowers than usual. The autumn bud-eating pests in our garden are a grasshopper species called Holochlora japonica and the larvae of a small butterfly called the Lycaenidae. Recent efforts to exterminate these seem to have paid off.

九月の初めに剪定した枕木の階段脇の木立性バラたちが、今綺麗に花を咲かせ始めました. 厳しい夏や台風の強風にも耐えて、新しい枝を伸ばして咲くバラたちに感謝です.

今年は蕾を食べる害虫も少なく例年より花がたくさんです. 我が家の庭で秋に蕾を食べる害虫は、クダマキモドキというバッタの仲間とシジミチョウという小さな蝶の幼虫です. 最近はこれらの駆除に努めてきた成果がでたようです.

AUTUMN POTAGER IN THE MORNING SUN (朝日に輝く秋のポタジェ)

The summer of 2022 was really hot, but the mornings and evenings have become much cooler since the beginning of October.

The purple asters are in full bloom in the potager. The dwarf sunflowers (Sunbelievable), whose leaves were damaged by a typhoon in September, have recovered a little and are still flowering, albeit in small numbers.

今年の夏は本当に暑いなつでしたが、10月に入って朝夕はだいぶん涼しくなってきました.

ポタジェでは紫色のアスターが満開を迎えています. 9月の台風で葉が傷んでしまった矮性のひまわり、サンビリーバブルもすこし回復して少ないですがまだ花を咲かせ続けています.

In the raised bed with a standard rose, many Echium vulgare are sprouting from spilt seeds. Seedlings that sprouted a little earlier are already bearing blue flowers.

スタンダード仕立てのバラのあるレイズドベッドでは、こぼれ種からエキウムブルガレがたくさん芽吹いてきています. 少し早く芽吹いた苗は、青い花をすでにつけています.

In the dahlia raised bed, all three dahlia varieties went dormant after dying in the summer due to the intense heat, and one of them has sprouted and is growing a little. As a replacement for the dahlias, the zinnias are now in full bloom with many flowers.

ダリアのレイズドベッドでは、3種類すべてのダリアが猛暑で夏に枯れて休眠し、そのうちの一つが新芽を出して少し育って居ています. ダリアの代役としてジニアがいまたくさんの花を咲かせて満開です.
