Petit English Garden of MARPLE & POIROT

My wife and I started gardening in Fukuoka (Japan) in 2003. There was nothing but muddy clayey sloping land. At the beginning we made several structure such as steps and paths, and planted turf, fruit trees, roses, herbs etc. In 2010, we visited several famous English gardens, including Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Mottisfont Abbey Garden and Hidcote Manor Garden. We were shocked by the glory of those gardens. Since then, we have been trying to make small but glorious gardens by ourselves.

庭の紹介

　夫婦で庭づくりを福岡の郊外で2003年に始めました.　赤土むきだしの斜面にまず階段や園路をつくって芝をはり、果樹やバラ、ハーブなどを植えました.

　2010年にイギリスの有名なガーデンの、シシングハースト、モティスフォントアビー、ヒドコートマナーなどを回り、その素晴らしさに圧倒され、それから自分たちで小さくても素晴らしい庭をめざして庭づくりをつづけています.

GORGEOUS FLOWERS OF GLOBE ARTICHOKE (アーティチョークの豪華な花)

Artichoke flowers are gorgeous, like giant thistles.

アーティチョークの花は巨大なアザミのような豪華な花です.

In May the flower buds grew so large that some were harvested, boiled and eaten, but other buds were left to flower.

五月に花の蕾が大きくなって、一部収穫して茹でて食べましたが、その他の蕾はそのままにして花を咲かせることにしました.

When the bracts, which look like green petals, are starting to open up, we can see the choke, a crown of pointy fibers (resembling hair), at the centre of the flower. A number of the pointy fibers become the gorgeous purple florets of an artichoke flower from the periphery to the centre.

緑の花びらのように見える苞葉が開き始める時、花の中央にチョークという尖った繊維（髪の毛に似た）の冠が見えるようになります. そしてその無数の尖った繊維が周辺から中心部に向かってアーティチョークの花の豪華な紫色の小花になるのです.

数日後には別の品種の花も開花しました

If you look closely at the flowers, you can see that at first white pollen appears a little below the blue stamen. A few days later, the pollen is almost completely gone (it sticks to the bees as they come and move around) and the tip of the blue stamen splits in two. According to research on thistle flowers on the internet, pollination is only possible when the tips of the stamens have split. The same is thought to be true of artichoke flowers.

花をよく観察していると、最初は青いしべの少し下の方に白い花粉がでてくるのが分かります. そしてその数日後には花粉はほとんどなくなって（ハナバチが来て動き回るので、ハナバチにくっついてしまう）、青いしべの先端が二つに割れてくるのです. アザミの花の研究結果をネットでしらべてみると、めしべの先端が割れて初めて受粉が可能になるようです. アーティチョークの花も同じだと考えられます。

This explains why until now our garden has not produced any seeds at all. When pollination became possible, the pollen was taken away by bees. After that, the bees would not come. So we tried artificial pollination. I took the pollen when it was visible and pollinated it when the tip opened. I'm looking forward to growing them from seed if they turn out well.

今まで我が家では全く種が出来なかった理由がこれで分かりました. 受粉が可能になったときには花粉はハナバチに持ち去られていたのです. そのあとハナバチが来てくれなかったのでしょう. それで、人工授粉をやってみました. 花粉が見えているときに花粉を取って、先端が開いてきたときに授粉したのです. うまく種が出来れば、種から育てることができるので、今から楽しみです.
