BLUE BEE OF HAPPINESS IN THE BLUE BORDER (青の花壇の幸せの青い蜂)

 

The blue-coloured flower bee (Thyreus decorus) has been seen in gardens from time to time in the past, but this year it came again on catmint flowers. It is difficult to get a good look at them as they move very quickly and rarely stay still on the flower, but they have a beautiful blue pattern on a black background. It does not seem to be very interested in flowers other than catmint.

They are endangered and I would love to see more of the happy blue bee.

青い色の花蜂（学名、Thyreus decorus）は以前から時々庭で見かけていましたが、今年もキャットミントの花にやってきました。とても動きが素早く、ほとんどじっと花に止まっていることがないので、その姿をよく見ることは難しいのですが、黒地に綺麗な青の模様があります。キャットミント以外の花にはあまり興味がないようです。

絶滅が危惧されているそうで、幸せを運ぶ青い蜂には是非増えてほしいです。

A BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLY: INDIAN FRITILLARY (美しい蝶、ツマグロヒョウモン)

A beautiful butterfly that has been frequenting the blue flower beds recently is introduced here. It's called the Indian fritillary (Argynnis hyperbius). It feeds all the time on the nectar from the buddleia flowers that have started to bloom and the catmint flowers that have been in bloom since spring. The patterned design on the front and back of its wings is also wonderful to behold. In July, the chaste tree also begins to flower, attracting many butterflies along with the buddleia.

最近青の花壇に良く来る美しい蝶を紹介します。ツマグロヒョウモンという名前だそうです。咲き始めたブッドレアの花や、春から咲いているキャットミントの花の蜜をずっと吸っています。翅の表と裏の模様のデザインも素晴らしく、見とれてしまいます。七月にはセイヨウニンジンボクも咲き始めて、ブッドレアとともにたくさんの蝶たちを呼び集めます。

JUNE FLOWERS IN THE BLUE BORDER (青の花壇の六月の花たち)

 

The blue border flower bed is located on both sides of the arbour seat. We mainly grow blue and purple flowers. We aim to have flowers in bloom all year round as much as possible.

In early spring (February), Hardenbergia bloom on the fence behind. In April, the catmint starts to flower, in May the Salvia guaranitica and geraniium (Azure Rush, potted) start to flower. In June, Jacaranda (dwarf variety), Buddleia (dwarf variety) and Agapanthus bloom. In July, the chaste tree follows. The buddleia and the chaste tree continue to flower all the way through to autumn.

June is the busiest month, when around six different flowers bloom together.

青のボーダー花壇はアーバーシートの両側にあります。青や紫などの花を主に育てています。できるだけ一年中花が咲いていることを目標にしています。

早春（二月）には背後のフェンスにハーデンベルギアが咲きます。四月にはキャットミントが咲き始め、五月にはサルビアガラニチカやゲラニウム（アズールラッシュ、鉢植え）が咲き始めます。そして六月にはジャカランダ（矮性品種）、ブッドレア（矮性品種）、そしてアガパンサスが咲きます。七月にはセイヨウニンジンボクが続きます。ブッドレアとセイヨウニンジンボクは秋までずっと咲き続けます。

六月は六種類ぐらいの花が一緒に咲く、最も賑やかな季節です。

6月22日の朝のメインガーデン

HARVESTING POTATOES (ジャガイモの収穫)

 

Potager potatoes were harvested last weekend as the leaves had started to wither a little and the rainy season was almost upon us. The variety is Andes Red, a red-coloured potato.

We only planted four seed potatoes, but we harvested more than we expected. We immediately steamed them and served them with butter.

ポタジェのジャガイモは少し葉が枯れ始め、梅雨入りも間近となったので、先週末に収穫しました。品種はアンデスレッドという赤い色のジャガイモです。

種芋を4個植えただけですが、思ったよりたくさん収穫できました。さっそく蒸かしてバターをつけて頂きました。

JACARANDA BLOOMING IN THE BLUE BORDER (青の花壇でジャカランダが咲いています)

 

Jacaranda is a flowering tree native to Central and South America, and in its native region the flowers bloom before the leaves emerge, giving the whole flowering tree a very striking blue-purple landscape. Jacaranda is often a large tree, making it difficult to grow in private gardens. However, dwarf varieties have been developed which flower at a height of about 5 feet and do not grow so large that they can be grown in small gardens. The dwarf variety ‘Nichinan no Megumi’, which was planted in the ground last spring, flowered again this year, as it did last year. It has very beautiful blue-purple flowers.

ジャカランダは中南米原産の花木で、原産地では葉が出る前に花が咲き、花木全体が青紫に染まる景色はとても印象的です。ジャカランダはしばしば大木となるため、個人の庭では育てにくいのが欠点です。しかし、矮性の品種が開発されていて背丈程度でも花をつけ、大きくなりにくいため小さな庭でも育てられます。昨年春に地植えした矮性品種「日南のめぐみ」が昨年につづき、今年も開花しました。とても美しい青紫の花です。

HERB BEDS IN JUNE (六月のハーブ畑)

 

In the herb terraces, the chamomile that bloomed so beautifully in spring is gone, and now the rose geraniums (pink flowers) and cherry sage (red flowers) continue to bloom, plus the lavender has started to produce blue flowers.

The rainy season is just around the corner and the herbs need to be cut back to cope with the high temperatures and humidity.

ハーブの段々畑では春に美しく咲いたカモミールはなくなり、今はローズゼラニウム（ピンクの花）とチェリーセージ（赤い花）に加えて、ラベンダーが青い花を咲かせ始めました。

梅雨入り間近で、ハーブたちも切り戻しなどして高温と湿度の対策をそろそろ必要です。

ALSTROEMERIA PSITTACINA, OR NEW ZEALAND CHRISTMAS BELL (ユリズイセン、別名ニュージーランドクリスマスベル)

 

Alstroemeria psittacina, or New Zealand Christmas bell is a perennial herb native to South America, which blooms at this time of year with long spikes of flowers. The flowers are small and lily-shaped, looking radially from above. The flowers are dark red in colour with dark purplish brown spots inside. At first glance, the flowers are plain and unglamorous. It is also blooming on nearby paths and seems to have become partly a wildflower.

ユリズイセンは南米原産の多年草で、英語圏ではニュージーランドクリスマスベルとも呼ばれ、この時期に花穂を長く伸ばして花を咲かせます。上から見ると放射状に小さなユリのような形の花がついています。花の色は暗赤色で、内側には濃い紫がかった茶色の斑点があります。一見派手さのない地味な花です。近くの山の小道にも咲いていて、一部野草化しているようです。

TWO DAHLIAS ARE BLOOMING (ふたつのダリアが咲いています)

 

The dahlias have mainly been grown in the pentagonal raised bed in the potager, but the number of dahlias, of which there were three or four varieties, has gradually decreased, so I decided to grow more vegetables in the raised beds and potted the dahlia. The only one left is a purple double-flowered dahlia, which has been flowering since last week. It is a very beautiful colour.

The other dahlia is a single orange dahlia that has been blooming every year for more than 10 years on the brick wall. It is a beautiful, cheerful colour with a beautiful gradation of shades of orange. It blooms repeatedly until autumn.

ダリアは主にポタジェの五角形のレイズドベッドで育ててきましたが、３，４種類あったダリアも次第に減ってきて、レイズドベッドで野菜の栽培を増やすことにし、ダリアは鉢植えにしました。唯一残ったのが紫色の八重咲のダリアですが、先週あたりから開花してきました。とても綺麗な色です。

もう一つのダリアは、レンガ塀で10年以上前から毎年咲いているオレンジ色の一重のダリアです。オレンジ色の濃淡のグラデーションがきれいな、元気の出る色です。秋まで繰り返し咲きます。
