Hakushū Kitahara (1885–1942) was a poet, children’s songwriter and tanka poet from Yanagawa City in Fukuoka Prefecture, a town famous for its river boat trips. Every year on the anniversary of his death, a water parade is held. Taking place after sunset, the parade sees around 50 small river boats criss-crossing the network of canals that run through the city. Various songs and dances are performed at various points along the route to entertain the passengers. Near the starting point, a performance of traditional Japanese court music (Gagaku) was taking place. It was music that truly touched the heart.
