ROSES IN JULY (七月のバラ)

Some roses in our garden are in bloom again, now.  They are not so splendid as in May, but are beautiful.

At the sleeper steps, Rosa 'Mary Rose' and 'Scarborough Fair' are blooming.

BLUEBERRY SEASON HAS COME (ブルーベリーの季節)

Blueberry has begun to ripen, and we harvested 300 grammes of the fruit last weekend.  Birds, such as  brown-eared bulbuls, also come to eat, however, badgers do not appear at present.

We set a net over the blueberry trees again.

RHUBARB JAM (ルバーブでジャム)

Rhubarb is not so popular in Japan.  It is cultivated in cooler areas, and we bought a seedlings when I visited Nagano and Yamanashi in June 2014.  The seedlings did not grow well and died.
So, we tried to grow rhubarb once again this year.  Fortunately, two seedlings has grown well in pots, and today we harvested its  stalks and made jam, of course, for the first time.  It tastes good with its sourness.

In a very hot summer, it is said to be better to grow in shade.  So I transferred the pots in the shade of a car park. We wish rhubarb survive hot summer.

MUSICAL 'LES MISERABLES' (レ・ミゼラブル)

Thursday evening, we went to see the musical 'Les Miserables'.  It is a very popular musical all over the world, and the longest-running musical in the West End, however, we saw it for the first time.

We went to 'Hakataza' theatre by train.  This is for the first time since we saw the musical 'Lady Bess' last August.

The theatre was built at the center of Fukuoka City in 1999 and has 1,454 seats.  This time we bought tickets of the left balcony seats which form a single line.  We really enjoy the musical.

A view from our seats

As a commemorative souvenir, I bought a book 'Les Miserables' published by Oxford University Press as one of the bookworms series.  It's a very short retold story and easy to read for me.

TRAGIC APPLE TREES (悲劇のリンゴの木)

We had no words when we saw the tragedy fallen upon the apple trees.

We preesented an apple tree to the next-door neighbour family two years ago.  They are a young couple and  two little children.  The tree born flowers in last April for the first time, and many apples have been growing these days.  I thought that a little boy would be pleased when he'd harvest apples by himself in autumn.

When we took a walk in our neighbourhood as usual and came back to our kitchen garden on Tuesday morning, we found the apple tree was pulled out and torn in pieces.  We were so sad, and we realized that some wild boars had done it.  Espalier apple trees were also damaged.  Some branches were broken and a hole was made.

A 'hole' was made by breaking a espalier branch.

We made a fence. in a hurry, by using welded wire fabrics in order to protect the espalier for the time being.

It was a sad day last Tuesday, however, Marple and the young man next door replanted the tree with some roots wishing for its survival.  I do really wish the tree revives.

VIVID ORANGE OF MONTBRETIA

A few montbretia (Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora) flowers are in bloom in our garden now.  It is a hybrid of C. aurea and C. pottsii, first bred in 1880.   We often find them under the trees on roadsides and in the meadow.   It is said that it is invasive in the UK, New Zealand, the American Pacific Northwest etc.

LEMON TEA TREE & GRAPE (レモンティーツリーとブドウ)

My wife planted a lemon-scented teatree (Leptospermum petersonii) behind a persimmon tree several years ago, and it has grown to more than 13 feet, and now it is bearing so many flowers for the first time.  I cut the flowers and the tree has a distinctive lemony aroma.  My wife arranged the flowers with blue flowers of salvia guaranitica in the herb bed.

===================================

In the kitchen garden, fruit of grape vine is growing.  Today I wrapped ten bunches of grapes in water-proofed paper bags to protect fruit against pests.  But it is not perfect because bags were torn and the fruit was eaten, probably by a badger, last year.
