ERIGERON, CATMINT, LANTANA etc (エリゲロン、キャットミント、コバノランタナ・・)

Today I introduce flowers in the central bed now.  Iris was over and euphorbia is still blooming.

Erigeron karvinskianus;  a vigorous, spreading perennial plant and opening white but soon turning pink.

Catmint (Nepeta);  easy to grow perennials that not only have purple-blue flowers, but gray-green foliage that remains attractive throughout the growing season.

Lantana montevidensis; its plentiful colorful lavender to purple flowers and strong scent.

North pole (Leucanthemum paludosum); a perennial plant, however, it is treated as annual plant in Japan because it is weak in the heat.

OSTEOSPERMUM, CALLA etc (オステオスペルマムやカラーの花)

I took photos of flowers in our garden last weekend.

First one is osteospermum among oxalis leaves.  I love its light purple colour.

Viola is beautifully flowering even now in the pots, the peony bed, and under the metal rose arbour.

The third is white calla in the border beside agapanthus.

28 April

And the last one is Japanese thistle (Cirsium japonicum) .   It's beautiful but its leaves have sharp prickles; it is similar to rose in that kind of meaning.

SWEET FRAGRANCE OF WISTERIA

At the end of the last summer, we planted Wisteria floribunda at the place where tree peony had once been planted.  It has started to bloom since last week.  Its bluish purple is so beautiful.  We planted it in a terracotta pot and the pot was set into the bed because the tree peony might be replanted  in the future.  Our garden is filled with its sweet scent.

Wisteria floribunda is native in Japan, and is one of the most popular flower in spring.
The Kawachi Fuji Gardens in Kitakyushu City, which is world-famous because of its pastel-colored fairytale tunnel, is 100km away from here.

HANG IN THERE, TREE PEONY!

Tree peony planted in the peony bed had been blooming beautiful pink flowers every year.  Four pictures below was shot in April 2013.

It flowered last year, however, it looked feeble.  Many new shoots withered while it was flowering.

This picture (below) was taken in July 2014.  The number of branches and leaves was far less than usual.

At the end of August, we dug it out and checked the roots and soil.  It became clear that there was no pests in the soil, and that roots of its herbaceous peony stock was rotten.  Fortunately, fine roots of tree peony were alive, therefore, we decided to plant it in the pot and to nurse.

We were worried about it, but it is growing and looks good at present.  Of course, it didn't flower this year.  Hang in there, tree peony!

AZALEA KURUME (久留米つつじ)

A large group of evergreen azaleas, known as Kurume Hybrids, has its origin near the Japanese city of Kurume (50 km away from here).  Azalea is one of the popular and representative spring flowers in Japan, and Kurume Hybrids bloom in April.  Flowers entirely cover itself.

We have five varieties of Kurume Hybrids; purple, red , pink, red/white and white.  They are behind the brick wall.  Now, they are almost in full bloom.

When we planted them, they were small plants.  Now they have grown pretty large.
