The chaste tree is a shrub with beautiful blue flowers in summer. The tree reaches a height of several metres.
In small gardens, it should be cut back to a few dozen centimetres from the ground at the end of autumn each year to limit its height and lateral spread. By early summer it produces many new branches, from which a few are selected and propped up to keep them straight; by early July the flower buds begin to grow and the flowers bloom, continuing until around the end of October.
The many blue and blue-purple flowers on the thin flower spikes look very cool in the hot summer months.
Although the days are hot, reaching 35°C in between the rainy season, they bloom together with other blue flowers such as agapanthus and potato vine, making it feel very cool for a brief moment in the early morning.
セイヨウニンジンボクは夏に美しい青い花を咲かせる低木です。樹高は数メートルに達します。
狭い庭では、樹高は横への広がりを制限するために、毎年秋の終わりに地上から数十センチほどに切り戻します。初夏に新しい枝をたくさん伸ばしてきますので、その中から数本を選んで支柱をしてまっすぐに伸びるようにします。7月初めまでには花芽が伸びて花が咲き始め、10月ごろまでずっと花を咲かせます。
細い花穂にたくさん青や青紫の花がついて、暑い夏にはとても涼しげに見えます。
梅雨の合間に35℃にも達する暑い日が続いていますが、アガパンサスやツルハナナスなど他の青い花たちとともに咲いていて、早朝のひと時だけはとても涼しさを感じることができます。
