Petit English Garden of MARPLE & POIROT

My wife and I started gardening in Fukuoka (Japan) in 2003. There was nothing but muddy clayey sloping land. At the beginning we made several structure such as steps and paths, and planted turf, fruit trees, roses, herbs etc. In 2010, we visited several famous English gardens, including Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Mottisfont Abbey Garden and Hidcote Manor Garden. We were shocked by the glory of those gardens. Since then, we have been trying to make small but glorious gardens by ourselves.

庭の紹介

　夫婦で庭づくりを福岡の郊外で2003年に始めました.　赤土むきだしの斜面にまず階段や園路をつくって芝をはり、果樹やバラ、ハーブなどを植えました.

　2010年にイギリスの有名なガーデンの、シシングハースト、モティスフォントアビー、ヒドコートマナーなどを回り、その素晴らしさに圧倒され、それから自分たちで小さくても素晴らしい庭をめざして庭づくりをつづけています.

PRUNING BOXWOODS OF THE POTAGER (ポタジェの西洋ツゲ剪定)

Even in the second half of August, the heat is still around 35°C, which makes working in the garden tough.

There has been feeding damage by boxwood moth larvae on the boxwood in the potager, and the shoots have been growing too long after being left alone for a while, so I decided to take the plunge and trim the height of the bushes to about 2/3. To make it easier to work in raised beds, the western boxwood separating the triangular and square plots was cut at the base.

As it was really hot and sunny during the day, we wore air-conditioned clothes and managed to finish pruning the boxwood inside the potager on Saturday and Sunday, taking a break every 20 minutes in the air-conditioned garden room.

The pruning has lowered the height of the trees, making it easier to step over them.

The boxwood on the outside will be pruned at a later date.

8月の後半になっても35℃前後の暑さが続いているため庭仕事も過酷です.

ポタジェで西洋ツゲにツゲノメイガの幼虫による食害が発生していて、しばらく放置状態で新芽が伸びすぎていることもあって、思い切って樹高を2/3程度に刈り込むことにしました. レイズドベッドでの作業がしやすくなるように、三角の区画と四角の区画を区切る西洋ツゲは根元で切りました

日中は本当に暑くて日差しも強いため、空調服を着て、20分毎に冷房の効いたガーデンルームでの休憩をはさみながら、土日で何とかポタジェの内側の西洋ツゲの剪定を終えました.

剪定して樹高が低くなったので、踏み越えるのが楽になりました.

外周の西洋ツゲはまた後日剪定する予定です.

The espalier and arching apples had a good harvest this year, which happens only once every few years, and the recent typhoon caused only a few fruit to fall.

エスパリエ仕立てとアーチ仕立てのリンゴは今年は２，３年に一度の豊作の年で、先日の台風でも落果は少数で済み、来月には熟して収穫を迎えます.

There are few flowers in mid-summer, but the roses are returning and the sunflowers, which are tolerant of the heat, are in bloom.

真夏に花は少ないですが、バラの返り咲きと暑さに強いひまわりが咲いています.

The asparagus fell over the other day, but the large branches were cut off as they had broken off at the base and were dying. A number of new shoots have sprouted at the base and we will be able to harvest a little at a time.

先日倒れたアスパラガスですが、大きな枝は根元で折れて枯れてきたので切りました. 根元では何本も新芽が出てきて、少しずつ収穫できそうです.
