CONVERTING THE JASMINE ARCH INTO A FENCE (ジャスミンのアーチからフェンスに作り変え)
We have Hagoromo jasmine (Jasminum polyanthum) growing in two spots in the garden. One is trained along the fence separating the main garden from the side yard garden, with a small fountain as the focal point beside it.
The other was formed into an arch at the base of the steps leading up to the main garden from the lower entrance. The arch was created using two native Elaeagnus pungens trees that had grown naturally on either side of the steps; these were bent to form the arch.
Year by year, the jasmine grew larger, making the passage increasingly difficult. Pruning was also challenging on the slope, so we decided to remove the arch.
First, we heavily pruned the jasmine while untangling its branches, then cut the arch trees back short. Next, we laid weed barrier fabric (Zabarn) on the ground and installed welded wire mesh (1 metre high, 2 metres wide) parallel to the path. We secured it using the shortened trees and reinforcing bars as supports. Finally, we trained the slightly longer remaining jasmine branches to complete the work.
There are hardly any leaves now, but it might bloom a little next spring. It will likely grow splendidly and produce abundant flowers by spring 2027.
ハゴロモジャスミンは庭の2か所で育てています。一か所はメインガーデンと横庭を隔てるフェンスに誘引して、その横には小さな噴水をフォーカルポイントにしています。
そしてもう一か所は下の入り口からメインガーデンに登る階段のところにアーチにしていました。アーチを作るのはナワシログミという木で階段の両側に自然に生えてきた２本の木を曲げてアーチ状にしたものでした。
年々ジャスミンは大きく育ってきて、通り抜けにくくなってきていました。また剪定も斜面でしにくいこともあり、アーチを撤去することにしました。
まず、ジャスミンの枝をほどきながら強剪定し、次にアーチの木を短く切りました。次に、地面に防草シート（ザバーン）を敷き、溶接金網（縦１メートル、横２メートル）を遠路に平行に設置して、短く切った木や鉄筋を支柱にして固定しました。最後に少し長く残していたジャスミンの枝を誘引して完成です。
今はほとんど葉はありませんが、来春には少し花が咲くかも知れません。立派に育ってたくさん花が咲くのは2027年の春でしょう。

FOLLOWING THE RED, LIGHT CREAM LYCORIS BLOOMS (赤に続きクリーム色のリコリス開花)
After the red spider lilies (red lycoris) had bloomed, now light cream-coloured lycoris have begun to flower. Several flowers have appeared where the red lycoris bloomed. The bluebell garden is where many have started to bloom. It is truly moving to see the flower spikes all stretch out and bloom together. The garden, which had been dark and shaded by cherry trees and fruit trees throughout the summer, becomes vibrant. Once the flowers finish, the leaves emerge. The bluebells are now dormant, with nothing visible above ground, but come autumn, roots begin to sprout from the bulbs, and they will shoot up in early spring.
彼岸花（赤いリコリス）が咲いたあと、今度は淡いクリーム色のリコリスが咲きだしました。赤いリコリスが咲いたクワズイモの所に数個の花が咲いています。たくさん咲きだしたのがブルーベルの庭です。花穂が一斉に伸びだして咲いてくるのは感動的です。夏の間桜や果樹の陰になって暗い庭が華やかになります。花が終わると葉が出てきます。ブルーベルは今は休眠期で地上には何もありませんが、秋になると球根から根が出始めて、早春に芽吹きします。

A FLOWER FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY - QUEEN OF THE NIGHT (一晩だけの花、月下美人)
The Queen of the night is a type of cactus that produces white flowers which bloom for just one night. I noticed the bud forming about ten days ago and watched over it. As the bud swelled in the evening, I knew it would open that night and photographed it indoors. By the following morning, the flower had closed and wilted. Please see the video showing this process.
月下美人はサボテンの一種で、一晩だけ咲く白い花をつけます。10日ほど前に蕾がついているのに気づき、見守っていました。夕方蕾が膨らんできたので、今晩開くと分かり、室内で撮影しました。翌日の早朝には花は閉じて、しぼんでしまいました。その様子を動画でご覧ください。

THE ELEGANT CLEOME THAT BLOOMS CONTINUOUSLY (咲き続ける優雅なクレオメ)
We grow cleome on the balcony of our garden room. Last year, seeds must have fallen to the ground below, for looking down from the balcony, I spotted cleome flowers blooming beside the supporting pillar. They began flowering in midsummer, producing new buds daily that open into blossoms. The buds are a deep pink, but when they open, the petals are a bright pink. The shape of the flower is very elegant. It seems likely that flowers will bloom again next year from the self-sown seeds.
クレオメをガーデンルームのバルコニーで育てていますが、去年種が下に落ちたらしく、バルコニーから下を見るとバルコニーを支える柱の横に咲いているクレオメの花を見つけました。真夏から咲き始めて、毎日新しいつぼみを出して花が開きます。つぼみは濃いピンク色ですが、開くと花びらは明るいピンク色です。その花の形はとてもエレガントです。来年もまたこぼれ種から花が咲きそうです。

POTAGER GARDEN IN LATE SEPTEMBER (九月下旬のポタジェガーデン)
Late September has finally brought the end of summer into view. This year too, a record-breaking hot summer persisted for three months from late June, leaving both the garden plants and us humans thoroughly exhausted. In the potager garden, hints of autumn are beginning to show. The harvest of the small “Alps Maiden” apples is already complete, and the Fuji apples will be ready soon. Potato shoots are emerging, tomato flowers are beginning to bloom, and the asparagus is sprouting new shoots once more. The perilla or shiso is flowering in white and pink.
九月下旬になりやっと夏の終わりが見えてきました。今年も記録的な暑い夏が６月末から３か月の間続いてきて、庭の植物たちも人間もさすがにばてています。ポタジェガーデンでは秋の気配も少し見えています。小さなリンゴのアルプス乙女の収穫はすでに終えて、フジの収穫がそろそろです。ジャガイモの芽がでてきて、トマトの花が咲き始め、再びアスパラが新芽を出してきています。シソは白とピンクの花が咲いています。
