Petit English Garden of MARPLE & POIROT

My wife and I started gardening in Fukuoka (Japan) in 2003. There was nothing but muddy clayey sloping land. At the beginning we made several structure such as steps and paths, and planted turf, fruit trees, roses, herbs etc. In 2010, we visited several famous English gardens, including Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Mottisfont Abbey Garden and Hidcote Manor Garden. We were shocked by the glory of those gardens. Since then, we have been trying to make small but glorious gardens by ourselves.

庭の紹介

　夫婦で庭づくりを福岡の郊外で2003年に始めました.　赤土むきだしの斜面にまず階段や園路をつくって芝をはり、果樹やバラ、ハーブなどを植えました.

　2010年にイギリスの有名なガーデンの、シシングハースト、モティスフォントアビー、ヒドコートマナーなどを回り、その素晴らしさに圧倒され、それから自分たちで小さくても素晴らしい庭をめざして庭づくりをつづけています.

PICKING SEASON OF APPLES IS APPROACHING (そろそろリンゴの収穫の時期)

The heat has eased slightly, settling into ordinary summer warmth, and the apples in the potager are beginning to colour. We grow two varieties of apple, “Alps Otome (Alpine maiden)” and “Fuji”, trained as arches and espaliers. It is the Alps Otome that are colouring. This variety only grows to about 4 centimetres in diameter, but the flavour is good. They look rather dirty, but they wash clean. We once made pies using a whole one, just as they were.

The other variety, Fuji, has bags over the fruit to protect against pests and birds. Looking inside the bags, the fruit is still green, so harvest seems a little way off. The fruit on the branches shaped into a heart has no bags. I plan to use this to judge the ripeness.

Kyushu, where we live, has a hot climate unsuitable for apples that prefer cooler conditions. Around the rainy season, brown spots tend to appear on the leaves, leading to leaf fall. By late August, most leaves have dropped. New buds then emerge, producing a little foliage, and occasionally even flowers. Seeing the leaf spots, I wondered if it might be disease and tried various fungicides, but the situation didn't change at all. So now, I'm not using any chemicals at all.

ほんの少し暑さが和らいできて、普通の夏の暑さになっていますが、ポタジェのリンゴは色づいてきています。2種類のリンゴの品種、「アルプス乙女」と「フジ」をアーチ仕立てと垣根仕立てにして育てています。色づいてきているのはアルプス乙女の方です。実は直径4センチほどにしか大きくならない品種ですが、味は良いです。見た目はとても汚れていますが、洗うときれいになります。以前、一個丸ごとそのままの形でパイを作ったことがあります。

もう一方の品種「フジ」の実には害虫や鳥よけのために袋掛けをしていますが、袋の中の実をみるとまだ青くて収穫はもう少し先のようです。ハート形にしつらえた枝のところについた実は袋掛けをしていません。これをみて熟し具合を判断しようと思っています。

私たちの住む九州は冷涼な気候を好むリンゴには適さない高温の気候で、梅雨の時期ぐらいから葉に茶色の斑点が出てきやすく、落葉が始まり、8月末ぐらいには大半の葉が落ちてしまいます。そして新たに新芽が出てきて葉を少し茂らせ、時には花をつけることもあります。葉の斑点をみて病気ではないかと考えていろいろな殺菌剤などを試してみましたが、まったく状況は変わらないので、今は特に何も薬は使っていません。
