Petit English Garden of MARPLE & POIROT

My wife and I started gardening in Fukuoka (Japan) in 2003. There was nothing but muddy clayey sloping land. At the beginning we made several structure such as steps and paths, and planted turf, fruit trees, roses, herbs etc. In 2010, we visited several famous English gardens, including Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Mottisfont Abbey Garden and Hidcote Manor Garden. We were shocked by the glory of those gardens. Since then, we have been trying to make small but glorious gardens by ourselves.

庭の紹介

　夫婦で庭づくりを福岡の郊外で2003年に始めました.　赤土むきだしの斜面にまず階段や園路をつくって芝をはり、果樹やバラ、ハーブなどを植えました.

　2010年にイギリスの有名なガーデンの、シシングハースト、モティスフォントアビー、ヒドコートマナーなどを回り、その素晴らしさに圧倒され、それから自分たちで小さくても素晴らしい庭をめざして庭づくりをつづけています.

MAY DAVID AUSTIN REST IN PEACE (デビッドオースチンさんのご冥福をお祈りいたします)

I learnt on Instagram that Mr David Austin from the UK had passed away. He was the second-generation head of David Austin Roses.

イギリスのデビッドオースチン氏が亡くなられたことをインスタグラムで知りました。彼はデビッドオースチンロージズの2代目でした。

Our first encounter with David Austin roses was back in April 2005, when we were just starting out with our garden. It was at a local nursery that we came across ‘Gertrude Jekyll’, a wonderfully fragrant pink rose.

私たちのデビッドオースチンのバラとの出会いは庭づくりの初期の2005年4月でした。近くのナーセリーで素晴らしい香りのあるピンクのバラ、ガートルード・ジェキルとの出会いです。

Then, in 2010, we visited the David Austin Rose Garden in Shropshire, England. I remember very clearly being overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of the roses. At that time, his father, David Austin, was still alive.

そして、2010年にイギリスのシュロップシャー州にあるデビッドオースチンのバラ園を訪ねました。とても美しいバラたちに圧倒されたのをよく覚えています。当時はお父様のデビッドオースチンもご存命でした。

This visit prompted me to plant mainly David Austin roses in my English-style garden. In front of the brick wall, we cultivated ‘Constance Spry’, the first English roses to be bred, the strongly scented ‘Gertrude Jekyll’, and ‘Pat Austin’, amongst others.

この訪問を契機にして英国風の庭園づくりでは主にデビッドオースチンのバラを植えました。レンガ塀の前には最初に作出されたイングリッシュロースのコンスタンス・スプライ、香りの強いガートルード・ジェキル、そしてパット・オースチンなどを育ててきました。

In 2013, we visited the David Austin Rose Garden in Sennan City, Osaka, which had only recently opened. By chance, the son of the original David Austin was there giving a talk, and he kindly signed a copy of *All About English Roses*, a book published by NHK, for us.

2013年に出来て間もない大阪泉南市のデビッドオースチンのバラ園を訪ねました。たまたま初代デビッドオースチンの息子さんが来られて講演をされ、イングリッシュローズのすべてというNHKが出版した本に私たちもサインをいただきました。

That book still sits on our bookshelf today. Furthermore, the photograph we had taken with him on that occasion has been on display in our garden room ever since.

その本は今も書棚に並んでいます。そしてその時に一緒に撮らせていただいた写真はガーデンルームにずっと飾っています。

I was truly shocked to learn of the passing of Mr David Austin, who was younger than us. I would like to take this opportunity to offer my sincere condolences once again.

私たちよりお若いデビッドオースチン氏が亡くなられたことを知り本当に驚きました。改めてご冥福をお祈りいたします。
