Ilex aquifolium (Christmas holly) is an evergreen tree with glossy, bright green leaves with sharp spines and bright red berries, and is used for Christmas decorations.
Three saplings were planted at the top of the terraced herb beds 10 years ago and have now grown into a fine hedge about 2 metres high. These days the berries turn red every year as the festive season approaches, signalling that Christmas is near.
We sometimes use them for Christmas decorations, but most of the berries provide winter food for the birds.
