In June this year, the ground cherry bore fruit, which ripened and was eaten in July. After that, it neither flowered nor set fruit throughout the summer, but come October, it has flowered again and is setting fruit.
The ground cherry is a perennial and can overwinter outdoors in our region. If you prune them back short in winter, new shoots emerge and grow again from spring.
The fruit turns from green to yellow/orange, and when the husk changes from green to brown, it's a sign the fruit is ripe. They resemble cherry tomatoes in appearance, and the fact they contain many small seeds inside is also very tomato-like. Their sweet and sour flavour is exceptional.
Currently, only one is ripe, but the many other fruits will likely ripen and be ready to eat before winter sets in.
今年の六月にホオズキトマトに実がなって、七月に熟して食べました。その後、夏の間は花も咲かず実もつきませんでしたが、十月になってまた花が咲き、実がついています。
ホオズキトマトは多年草で、私たちの地域では屋外で冬越しができます。冬に短く切り戻しておくと、春からまた新芽が出て成長します。
その実は黄色からオレンジ色で、袋が緑から茶色に変わると実が熟したサインです。ミニトマトに似た外観、中には小さな種がたくさん入っているのもトマトそっくりです。甘酸っぱい味は格別です。
今は一個だけ熟していますが、他のたくさんの実も冬に入る前には多分熟して食べられるでしょう。
